hi, like I stated in my earlier post, I have installed the 5050e in my laptop, its a am+ core so its just a cpu swap . nothing fancy , just take it apart like in the earlier post. but replace the thermal pads with good quality paste.(I used arctic silver 5) but, use very little spread it as thin as poss on the top of the cpu. and clean the heatsink with alchol an polish it if you can with metal polish till its shiny . then wash off the chemical and dry it . the thermal pad on the top of the video chip should stay on don t replace it with paste . then reinstall ,tightnen the screws in squence they are numbered 1-4 on top of the heatsink just tignten till they are bottomed out . replace all your other components and it should reconize it in the bios . oh remember too take out your battery before you do anything to the laptop. the only thought i have on your ram is that maybe it was not seated correctly , by you reinstalling it may have fixed the problem ,it seems that way too me. also if you put in 4 gig ram from what i know vista will see 3 of it , the other gig goes too the on board chip . like I said in my post ,I have been using it for everything ,from e mail to gaming ,nothing too intense, call of duty 1 .the rest the frame rates are too low . the normal temp is around 39 c and the hottest I have seen is 71c . the only way to make the machine faster is a faster hard drive , which seems to be harder too find than I first thought . I checked the seating of the RAM and it was good. Better to be safe than sorry, I returned the 4 gig (2x2) to Fry's. They wanted $79 for a single 2 gig, so I passed and ordered a Kingston from newegg for $25. Discression being the better part of valor, I decided to drop back to 3 gig.
I installed the 5050e yesterday with my 2x1 gig reinstalled until the newegg order gets here. That's doing great...not excessively hot and a noticeable performance increase.
Now, I'm seeing something else...the 2x1 gig of ram is runnning as single channel even though the processor, memory controller, etc. are rated at dual channel and both ram modules are also dual channel.
In looking closer, I see that the 1x1 gig the machine was delivered with is a 5300 (667mhz)...while (trusting the spec) my added 1x1 gig is a 6400 (800 mhz). My reading up on dual channel indicates the ram has to be "matched," so is the mismatch between the 667 and 800 the cause of the "drop back" to single channel? If so, when the 2 gig arrives, I'll retain the 1x1 6400 and take out the 5300 and that should correct the problem? Or do the two ram modules have to be also "balanced" (both 1 gig, or 2 gig, etc.)?
cpuz is only showing a 997.6 mhz core speed (5.0 x 199.5 mhz). Is this also because of the single mode? I see an upgrade to the same chip in the same model in another thread here is showing a cpuz report of 2.6 (13 x 199.6).
What do the experienced/expert posters here think? -
yes , you right to a degree. if you want to have dual channel memory they have to be the same everything, maker, model, speed, size everything otherwise the will go too the lower size memory speed. lots of makers make dual channel memory sold in pairs . in fact I have a few for my desktop, in my case I just bought two sets of ram, same everything but not sold in a pair of two for dual channel. as for your speed of CPU , yes I get the same lower speed if its just running not doing anything intensive, it does speed up to a higher cpu speed when I use it too game. I think AMD puts " smart cpu "on the die ,so you use less power for e mails or web surfing. its still a 45 watt cpu so it might make sense for energy saving while its on low demand .
-
Thanks. Observation here validates that the processor is behaving properly, as you say....it "shifts down" to idle along, only using the cycles it needs.
As for the ram, yup, even though the sets are the same clock speed now, one is 1 gig, the other 2, so they are performing as single channel. Not really a problem, since this machine is fast enough. It went pretty crazy when I attempted 2x2 (a matched pair), so I shifted down to the 3 total. Not sure why it would not run properly with four...all other indications are that it should. -
well,I have read up a bit more , turns out the cpu has "cool and quiet" meant for the fan speed and noise. so if you have a desktop, the fan on top of heatsink spins at a lower speed during low intensity apps.(surfing,e mail ) to keep the whole unit quiet. and ramps up the speed of the fan when you do something more intense(gaming) producing more fan cooling and noise , so the cpu cycles between slow(5x199) and fast (13x199) so it main design was to keep everything cool and quiet . good name ,lol . as for your memory , still not sure myself what happened . in my case it acted weird the first install , but i took them out and re installed both in case they were not seated right and they worked fine after that . not sure why dual channel is not working on yours,if others on here says it worked for them . and to be honest the BIOS has no real settings in it to help out. not a overclocking BIOS for sure ! like I did say before my is not dual channel, maybe if you want find a pair of 2x2 gig from someone and give it a try or maybe the motherboard is memory sensitive and just won't boot with certain memory in it . I am using 2x2 gig OCZ pc2-6400 ....part # ocz2m8002g... maybe go back in the other posts and see if they give part numbers on the dual channel ram that they used and is working for them . or maybe you can download cpu-z from cpuid and see what your memory timing are and you can get a memory timing adjust software and just make adjustments to your own till you get more speed if that's what your looking for . I found tom's hardware has a pretty good article on it. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclocking-software,2059.html .. overclocking a video card too, the one in the laptop can be adjusted very little . but , it does have memory overclocking softwear that might work .

hay guys! this is my second post so far. ive got an emachines d620, ive upgraded it to a 5050E cpu, and 4 gigs of ram. its been running smooth at around 39-55c but all of a sudden its been jumping to an average of 67-73c! any ideas why this is happening, ive taken it apart and cleaned it out, and im gona replace my thermalpaste. 1 guess is that since its summer, it just might be the room temp thats raised it. but i would like to be able to use it year around u know? not just during the winter months lol. any ideas?
-
Hi everyone
I got an e-machines d620 and i put after reading reading this topic an amd althon 5050e in it and 4 gb of ram
but my cpu is getting too hot in games, i got some lag if the cpu reaches 70 degC
how can i make the cooling better? i have used arctic silver 5
and i have the terminal pad on the video chip replaced for cooling paste or is this wrong?
Glenn -
1- Guys did you try undervolting (RMclock or similar) to lower the heat generate?
70 to 73c is a bit too hot when you have your laptop sitting in your laps .
2- Does the AC adapter need to be replaced when you upgraded to the 4850e or the 5050e?
thanks -
cheers ... -
So what's the maximum temperature that the 4859e and the 5050e reaches? you know when the CPU is at 100% for 1 hour?
-
I don't know the specific for these CPUs, but average working notebook CPUs temp should not exceed 60C when being pushed.
Mine is averaging 45-52C
cheers ... -
I just purchased the emd620-5355 $349CDN, I have an amd athlon 64 x2 3800 from my desktop which i recently upgraded. It's a 65 watt CPU. Should I be able to upgrade/install as easy as others? Will I also be able to put 4 gigs of ram in aswell?
Your adivce is appreciated -
I had this laptop for about 6 months and came across this thread and I've got the 5050e and PC2-6400 2x2GB OCZ ram and upgraded it. It was a breeze to install the new processor and RAM many thanks to "Ifarted2" for pictures on how to do it and was the reason I believed I could it. I've used geekbench test to compare before and after installing the new processor and the performance just doubled (result jumped from 1220 to 2520).
The 5050e generates lots of heat and the FAN was running very high all the time (FID/VID stays 13x/1.2v all the time). Then I've used RMclock to undervolt it and worked very well with lots of blue screen deaths. I've used orthos for CPU stress test for 40 minutes with these settings, so they should be good for typical usage.
These are the one I've settled with the following P-states.
2 settings of FID/VIDs (10x/1.0v) and (12x/1.125v)
I chose these 2 settings because my RAM runs @ 400 Mhz at this CPU multipliers. -
Hey there,
I'm glad I finally found this thread. I also have an emd620-577. Bought it last fall for 299 at Best Buy. Woohoo.
I saw that you guys already successfully replaced the lame 1.6GHz processor. I wanna do the same but have a few questions about it. I think I wanna put in the AMD Athlon x2 4850e as others of you guys have done before.
I saw there's a price difference of about 20 bucks for this processor. There is one for about 60 bucks (L1 Cache: 128KB, L2 Cache: 512KB) and one for about 80 (L1 Cache: 256KB, L2 Cache: 1MB). Is it worth getting the one for 80 bucks? Which 4850e did you guys put in? Do both work?
My other question is about BIOS. Is it necessary to upgrade or does the version from Sep 08 work with the new processor?
Did you guys face any problems with FSB compatibility between processor and motherboard?
Thanks for the support. -
I've got my d620 few days back and I have a question:
I did a bit of home work and it seems that AMD AM3 CPUs should be compatible with socket AM2.
If the BIOS was not an issue, can this laptop be upgraded to an AMD Athlon II?
I'm thinking about the X2 235e (2.7Ghz), X2 240e (2.8Ghz), X3 400e (2.2Ghz), X3 405e (2.3Ghz), X4 600e (2.2Ghz), and X4 605e (2.3Ghz). All of them have a 45w DTP. -
Bumping this thread...I have an eMD620 and want to upgrade the CPU, but no one seems to carry any of them. I can't even find the 5050e anywhere! Can somone suggest a readily-available CPU that I can buy for this beast?
-
Kaidomac, try the big auction site, there are a couple of 4050e and 5050e chips available there right now. The 45W AM2 CPUs have pretty much disappeared from the stores.

Okay I installed a 5050e and processor works great already had 2 gig in it but I will tell you the notebook sped up 5 times faster! Got mine on ebay $70 bucks. Got a seagate 320 gig 7200 rpm sata 300 which is 3gig same thing on ebay for 59 bucks! Waiting for windows 7 64 bit I got $100 off ultimate version on ebay As for the new amds they are socket 3 not am2. You need the 4850e or the 5050e keeps watts down to 45. (Ebay has 2 5050e's for sale) Otherwise you will have heat issues. Max heat temps are 70c range AMD says. Hope this helps!
-
Hey i'm new here. I have this laptop too and after upgrading the RAM to 4gig, i was just wondering because now I want to upgrade the processor from 2650e to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5050e... but would I have to replace the motherboard before doing this? because if so that isnt really worth it is it... (im just wondering, because i know nothing about computers or laptops, just the very basics...)
EDIT: If possible, is it safe so that I could I also go with AMD Athlon64 5600+ ? (i cant seem to find 5050e anywhere to buy...) -
I got more imformation from different people. I stand to be corrected you can put an am3 processor in a am2 socket which is what you have.you cant do vice versa . The thing you dont want to do is go up to 65 watt processor for the heat sink will get too hot. the 4850e wich is a 2.5 and the 5050e is a 2.6 is still the best bet. you can get these on ebay just keep checking. Also you might have to change the bios when going to an am3 processor just have to try it ! The motherboard is compatible without replacing it good luck!By the way I put 7200rmp hard drive from seagate and windows 7 ultimate and it rocks!
-
I'm trying now to get a couple of 4850e's, one for this eMD 620 and the other for an EL1200 mini desktop. If the auctions don't pan out, I might buy one 4850e from the Frys in Plano (their site shows they have one) and try it out in the desktop first.
After putting a T4300 PDC in my Acer 5230e (posting from it now), I'm excited to get some more performance out of the little eMachines unit. -
There was 6 5050e's on ebay over the weekend cheap!
Good Luck! -
I just messaged this guy over ebay, I wasn't sure about this processor being used in Laptops because it says the platforms PC. Now excuse my complete lack of knowledge but i'm not sure. He replied by saying that it is a desktop processor only. here's the link:
HTML:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-ATHLON-X2-4850e-2-5GHZ-CPU_W0QQitemZ220521563230QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motherboards_CPUs?hash=item33581c045e
-
Okay in the AMD family the processors that end in e. Example 2650e which is what u have now. The max watt in the 4850e and the 5050e is 45w. My 5050e came with a heat sink and fan for a tower. But the processor does work on the rs690 board which is what you have and you do not have to change the bios. Which is a blessing.
There were 5050e's for cheaper than that guy on ebay with the 4850e check the site .
Good luck! -
Thanks for the reply, its just I was getting mixed messages from everybody, until I came back to this site, thanks alot for the reply!
-
I tried to get some of those. Want two. They both got outbid when I wasn't awake or near the computer. Seems the 4850e and 5050e are the ones coming up most often. I also found a 4450B processor, which I suppose is AMD's business class range. I think it's $53 buy it now or something...lemme look...
Yep, there's that one and another 4450B for $40 BIN.
3250e, $87 BIN, not worth it as you'll see below...
4050e, nothing
4450e, nothing
4850e, one with a $29 start bid, another up to $47 with half a day left, and another for $66 BIN
5050e, only one at $87 BIN
Every AM2 socket 45W or less on this wiki page ought to do...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_X2_microprocessors
Which reminds me of the BE series. Here's one up to $11 so far, a BE-2400:
search.ebay.com/180445311412
According to Passmark CPUMark lists, it's halfway between a 4450e and a 4850e. 1240 score as opposed to 1180 or 1290. I'd say that is on my watchlist. Might as well try it out. Worst case I gotta buy another EL-1200 from CedarPC for $80 to get my desktop back up and running. I'm so glad the resale on these eMachines is nil. I don't have to buy spare PARTS, just spare COMPUTERS. -
It looks like we may be able to run an Athlon II X4 605e, Athlon II X4 600e or Athlon II X3 400e in the emD620-5777. Which all are 45w and have the same voltage as the 5050e
The UK emachines website as a bios update from 9/25/2009:
http://www.emachines.co.uk/em/custo...F=3624&rcond4l.attN2B2F2EEF=3912&CRC=99015199
Anyone tried this yet? It looks like the x4 605e is $170 processor. -

Are you 100% sure?

Finally I bought one 4050e. If finally it is confirmed that I can put an AM3 I will buy another hahaha.
Regards. -
Keep us posted. One of these would really fly IF it is compatible with the chipset and the lappy itself. I'd spend the money for it if it's a confirmed working setup.
-
Any updates on the backwards compatibility thing?
There's a ton of Athlon II X2 235e's on eBay at the moment (probably from people upgrading EL1331G desktops) and they seem to be staying under $50 thus far. I'm considering picking one up to try it out. I have the desktop and the laptop so I can try it in either (probably the desktop first since I can get a replacement from CedarPC for about $80 if I kill it)
Wish me luck, I'm going to try bidding on two of them... -
Athlon II 235e, 240e, 400e, 405e, 600e, and 605e won't work. I tried the 235e and the laptop refused to switch on.
I did some research and it seems that a bios hack/patch would enable this laptop to support Athlon II CPU. The hack consists on updating the AGESA module. I'm not techy enough to do it, and since I couldn't get the 235e to work I sold this laptop
The eMD620 with an Athlon II X4 600e or 605e would be a killer laptop...... -

Special functions:
1. 2-finger scrolling (Mac-style) - horizontal & vertical
2. 3-finger tap-to-open (put 3 fingers on the touchpad, wait a moment, it launches the application of your choice, like Firefox)
3. 3-finger flick (flick 3 fingers left/right for browser forward/back, or up/down to launch a photo/presentation slideshow)
A++++++++++++++++++ Makes this laptop feel like a whole new beast! A few other extra goodies:
1. Momentum: Makes the trackpad act like a trackball - the cursor "glides"
2. EdgeMotion: Mouse keeps moving once you hit the edge of the trackpad, if you hold your finger at the edge (no diagonal tho - only horizontal & vertical)
3. Physical buttons: Reprogram for a variety of tasks or a custom macro (useful with tap-to-click on the trackpad) -
Well I am new to this forum and I have to report that I am another success story.I have just exchanged the D620 1250 cpu for an Athlon 5600x2. It seems to be hovering at 48-57/58 deg while running media player,utorrent,D-Tools,and chatting online...Not only that but I also successfully baked two 8800GTS vid cards in my oven over the weekend...one for a revival attempt...which was more then successful yielding a seemingly stronger vid card with no artifacts...the other ...well ,just because!! It not only aleviated the major artifacting i was seeing in the card but by re-flowing the solder it seems to enhanced exsisting connections releasing more outright power and smoothness.Look up Vid card baking and follow the intructions...card stripped and propped...in preheated oven at 378F for no longer then 10 minutes!! I would almost recommend it even for 'good cards. If done properly I feel it can rid the cards of shotty solder joints due to mass production. It is after all how the components are attached to the pcb in the factory.

Hi there, I posted on this thread about my CPU upgrade and there has not been a reply after 73 views and counting. Can someone please guide me if the CPU is corect for my eMachines D620 laptop?
-
Finally got around to doing my upgrades:
+ Windows 7 Ultimate
+ AMD 5050e 2.6ghz dual-core CPU
+ 30GB OCZ SSD
Nice speed boost! I setup Win7 to look like Win2000 (gray theme w/o Aero) and it speeds along nicely. I'm not a huge fan of the giant graphics on a small 14" screen (was running XP before quite nicely). The CPU makes it feel like a real laptop now, but the fan is always on. Luckily it's not a whiny fan, more of a purr, so I don't mind it so much. My battery has also taken a hit - less than an hour now I think - but the extra power boost is worth it.
The SSD is nice, but with Office 2007 and Adobe CS5, I only have like 6 gigs free. I'm looking at the new Seagate Momentus XT, a 500gb 7200rpm 2.5" drive with a 4gb Flash boost - a hybrid SSD/HDD. Currently $129 on Newegg:
Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus XT ST95005620AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s with NCQ Solid State Hybrid Drive -Bare Drive
That way I'd get space + speed. It looks like the XT cruises along at 150 MB/s, which is about as fast as a Raptor. My SSD is 224 MB/s, but I also have no space, which is annoying. The nice thing about the Seagate is that the seek time is like 0.3ms, which is nearly as fast as a 0.1ms SSD (vs like 11ms on a standard HDD).
I only have 3 gigs of RAM right now and I'm thinking about upgrading it to 4 gigs now that I'm on Windows 7. The integrated video chews up some of the system memory, so I don't get the full amount anyway. Seems to eat a bit more RAM than XP did. I'm also looking around for a spare one - I really like the curved keyboard on my 620, so I should probably invest in one for the future, haha. eBay has some nice deals... -
I have a bent pin but not broken( I mean the cpu for this kind of laptop). Does it will effect my laptop performance? Can somebody tell me please...
-
Just a wee little update from me...
I did buy a 4450B (business class, identical to 4450e) chip off eBay from one that didn't sell, $25 SHIPPED, how cheap (I'm a cheap bastige, it was just right) and I put it in my kids' EL1200 desktop. Works like a charm. A really fast, turbocharged, sticky-tire-equipped, dragstrip-ready kind of charm. Shocked the *CENSORED* out of me! My kids' computer is now faster than my own, even with slower 6150SE graphics.
I have been scouring eBay for another to put in the laptop which my daughter is now using. Of course I probably won't actually do it, because she does not treat the laptop with respect. It has been dropped, shoved in dresser drawers, and she let the kids pry off the spacebar, V, B, C, N, G, and H keys. She can still type and it functions and all that, it just looks like garbage cosmetically.
I found out that the paperback book-sized Dell Zino desktop PC now uses the 3250e processor, and that means they were sold to OEM here in the States. I previously thought they were only sold in other countries because all the eBay sellers were from China or Hong Kong. But I think this has caused the price of those 22W processors to finally come down. The cheapest eBay listing for a 3250e as of this posting is $68.88, free shipping. Used to be you couldn't find them for less than $90-$100.
So that's good news for those of you who were considered a 45W 4050e-4450e-4850e-5050e but were concerned about heat or battery life.
As far as those B-series business class processors, only the 4450B is 45W. The others (5000B, 5200B, 5400B, 5600B) are 65W and I believe are based on Athlon 64 X2 5000+ through 5600+ models. If you think you can handle the 65W TDP, the B series chips seem to sell for about the same as the 5x00+ consumer chips. Gives you some more options for buying.
If you have the cash, I recommend picking up an SSD. That is the next upgrade I plan for my wife's screaming fiery overclocked i7-920 whitebox computer. But we're waiting for Windows 8 to do it since she is running an OEM (system builder) copy of Windows 7-HP-64 and I don't think it'll let us install it on a different drive. Keep in mind Windows 7 can BARELY install in a 30GB drive. Even a 40GB would be tight. You want to have free space for other things like a page file and caches and temporary folders. The 80GB Intel SSD seems to be the best value for the dollar in this case. 64GB drives from other brands sell for about the same money (Transcend is $179 for example) as the $195ish 80GB Intel. One can hope (I certainly do...) that SSD prices will continue to fall over the next year and maybe an 80GB SSD will be priced around $100-$120 by this time next year!
Another idea I had was for some company somewhere to combine a flash drive with a mini PCIe wireless card to allow people with laptops to add flash memory to their laptop without giving up their stock HD or their wireless capability. Heat would be a problem as would space. But if they can make iPod nanos in 16gb flavors, those things are tiny and the memory from them should fit on a mini PCIe card. -
Anyone have repair information on these?
My right corner hinge broke and popped out the bottom of the screen. The metal tore itself right off. I really like this laptop because it has a curved keyboard and is nicer to type on for long periods of time, so I want to keep it. Haven't found much in the way of repair stuff though. -
My daughter's laptop (eMD620-5777) has a LOOSE hinge but it's not broken. Yet. Currently missing spacebar, both Alt keys, R,T,Y,D,F,G,H,J,X,C,V,B,N,M and even the comma key and Esc key.
Still works.
I'm installing Ubuntu 10.10 on it as I type... -
Great notice for all. I had installed a Amd Neo X2 6850E Processor on Emachines D620 and WORKS PERFECT, full complete recognized for bios laptop and work at 100%. Cool&Quiet Fuction works fine.
Is a Dual Core Neo processor with 22W tdp
AMD Athlon Neo X2 6850e - ADJ6850IAA5DO
I readed previous post on this forum for upgrades to Emachines D620. Processor with 45W no good options, for more battery power and for heat.
I readed on previous post, athlon x2 3250e works in Emachines D620. Then I decided play with risk. I decided buy Neo 6850e and test it for work on Emachines D620.
And GREAT!!!!!... Works fine, complete recognized. Very fast processor, in save energy mode run at 1000 Mhz, and in High performance energy run fine at 1800 Mhz. Temps are great!!!!. Great temps and great time for battery. System W7 .
(Sorry for my poor English, I am Spanish User).
My tests and Pics:
I remove previous processor Amd 2650e Monocore. Put 6850e and use Thermal Great Quality Artic Cooling Mx2 Paste... but.. urgg.. finished paste.. need for complete all processor use paste Zalman good paste but no great quality like than Artic Cooling Mx2.. Bad Luck.
Re-install fan and all components.. Press button and YESS!. Processor work COMPLETE. Emachines D620 identify 100% Processor. Run at 100% and identify processor correct, Amd Neo6850e.
Cool´N Quiet work perfect. On energy saver minimum energy, processor work at 997,6 Mhz (1000 Mhz) and at Full performance option on energy saver W7, processor work at 1795,5 Mhz (1800 Mhz).
Full complete Support Report Perfect in Bios and in Cpu-z Execute in Windows 7. Core Vid at 1800 Mhz 1.000V. Core Vid at 1000 Mhz 0.800 V.

Sure Processor Zone core 2 is more heat, for sure i put in this zone Zalman termal grase... sure Zone core 1 bebbet cool heat for i put in this zone Artic Cooling Mx2... real pity, paste Mx2 finished and I no put paste for all processor...
Zalman is a normal Zalman thermal paste.... I try later buy new Artic Cooling Mx2 paste remove previous paste and put only Mx2 in all processor.
Sure later temp for Core 2 is better.
But processor with Mix Zalman and Mx2 work cool, temps checked are great for Dual Core Processor on Laptop Emachines D620... Are equal or better than previous processor 2650e Monocore!!!.
Great Inprovement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Time for battery in Economity W7 Energy mode is 2 hours with standard original garda battery. Everest report me, my battery is 11% bad.
I put in this laptop new Ddr 2 Memory 800 Mhz Samsung. 2 Gbytes, 2x1 Gbytes. And works fine.
And put too, new Hardisk Seagate Momentus 500 Gb 5400 rpm. And works fine and fast...

Filrond, that's an awesome full writeup, I wish I was that detailed all the time.
6850e is a 22W processor. Don't get confused out there, there is a 6650e Neo that is considered a desktop processor and is 35W. It may run as quick but it would definitely be hotter.
3250e are becoming easier to find, just not much cheaper.
I am about to purchase a 4050e just because I can get one shipped for like $31 from StarMicro. They have 4450e and 4850e as well and sometimes they aren't out of stock of 5050e.
