I sent my laptop to eMachines to replace the cracked hinges over a week ago now. I called the help desk and they told me that they replace the LCD screen when they repair the hinges and that the LCD screens are on back order. Big surprise. The very friendly support person said that they have many people that have been waiting for a replacement since January, so it may take a while. I'm very disappointed to say the least. I've read on this board about many people having a 3 or 4 day turnaround when sending their machines in for this repair. Now they tell me it could take months because parts are on back order. I wasn't the least bit prepared for this. Anyone else had this happen? Thanks.

No this is the first time I hear about this, Tx for posting it, I was going to send mine out to get the hinges fixed but for sure I'll give them a call before I do that.

I sent mine out Feb 25, call them last week( I had been very patient) the guy said they are doing the final testing. My refurbish unit has only 3 month warranty and one month is gone.

Tx guys appreciate it, keep us posted.

Just called eMachines today (Mon. Mar. 28) and was told they do have LCD screens in stock again and my laptop should be repaired soon and I should have it by the end of this week (Apr. 1st). IF (if) it does arrive, it will have been almost 3 weeks. When I tried to ask how many screens they have and if the shortage is no longer an issue, he just said that they have one for my machine and he had no idea of the numbers in inventory.

I believe that the hinges are attached to the LCD shell (the case with the e on it). They would have to disassemble the LCD from its shell and reassemble to a new shell (with fresh hinges) in order to give you the same screen. Its just cheaper and less time intensive for them to give you a new screen than to disassemble and reassemble the old one. I think .

OK guys I took the plunge today. Send it out on o4/06(wednesday)to get my hinges fixed.
Let's see what happens
Just read stylee's post we'll race
Learux -
Just out of curiousity.. Did eMachines/Gateway/Arima whoever repairs these things, send anyone a return tracking # via email or anything? Just any indication that it was being returned to you, or do you just have to wait till it shows up on your door step? Thanks.

Fedex will drop it off at your doorstep.
I have no other info, maybe call emachines, I am sure they can tell you about the whereabouts of your laptop.
Learux -
So I called eMachines today.. And here is the story.
My laptop was put on HOLD cause they have to verify the warranty cause I purchased mine refurb. So now it has been "escalated" and they have to send my info to coroporate and they have to approve it before they can work on it. I was told that if I don't receive my laptop on Tuesday or Wednesday next week to CALL BACK. Don't you think that if they need any info from me, ie. a receipt to show when I purchased it that they would call me when they found this problem and not wait for me to call them. [ !] Oh well, guess I will just have to continue working on my Athlon 1.3 ghz hunk of junk desktop till then.

Yeah strange story, maybe I'll win the race
Learux -
I think for sure you will win the race now.. I just got a call from eMachines, I called again and told them that it was unacceptable that I had to wait till Wednesday to see by chance if I got my laptop. And one of my things to fix was the dvd drive opening when you press the bezel not the button, and the customer service manager called me back and said the warehouse reported that the drive in there was not the stock DVD drive... I told him bull****, it's the stock drive, bought the laptop from tigerdirect.com and it came in a SEALED eMachines refurb box. HA, I just knew some crap like this would happen if I sent mine in. Just it's that dark cloud hanging over my head.

Hi Guys,
Just got it back today. Feb 25 to Apr 7, and 3-4 calls, totally unacceptable. And I would say Tigerdirect should get Emachines to fix the hinge problem on all refurbish units. This guy whom I talked to when I called in said I have another 3 months warranty on the whole notebook, not just the hinge. Anyone heard the same thing? -
Unfortunatly I wasn't home but fedex attempted to drop off my laptop,
Unbelievable. Send it out on wednesday, got it back on friday.
Learux -
You only got yours so fast cause they keep putting mine on hold. [ ] Glad to hear one of us had a fast turn around.

Yep they pulled it off, wednesday sent out, friday return. Brand new hinges that feel rocksolid. I am thrilled about their service.
Good luck to you guys!!
Learux -
Well, got mine back on Monday the 11th. Hinges look good, not to much play in them. DVD drive replaced, the drive doesn't open any more when you press on the bezel.. Except for a couple scratches on the top of the case (don't know where these came from) and a missing complact flash drive cover (the plastic piece that is the place holder) mine looks and feels good... OH and by the way, eMachines did flash my bios (I reflashed mine back to the original before I sent it in) it is now 0F08. Learux had a lot better luck than I did, I had to make 6 phone calls and talk to 3 different customer service managers before mine got repaired.

Hey! Has anyone gotten their hinges fixed through Best Buy? If so, how long did it take? [B)]
-
An eMachines Rep said Due to the fact that your notebook was manufactured outside of the effected group, you will have to pay for your hinges to be repaired. She also gave me the number to the corporate office.
-
Hey Gang,
I purchased my M6809 (refurb) from Tigerdirect.com on 1/27/05. I noticed the hairline cracks last week after reading some of the posts on this forum. I called e-Machines on Wednesday and they sent a box the next day through DHL. I packed it up called DHL for pickup on the sameday, Thursday (4/14/05) and got it back on Monday (4/18/05). [ ]
They replaced the entire screen and the bios was reflashed. I already had it flashed to the latest version but they did it again??
Oh well, glad to have it back.
-
Sent mine in on Monday and got it back today (Wednesday). Hinges are fixed but so far I can't get my wireless connection to work. They reinstalled the OS for some reason.
Wilson -
Well I've tried everything I can think of and the wireless just won't work. Could it be a bios probolem? Got new hinges now but no wireless connection

You may have already tried this... did you activate your wireless with the FN + F2 key? Also, since the OS was reinstalled do you have the Broadcom Wireless Network Utility installed?

Thanks Airdog, that (FN/F2) worked. Didn't realize it had to be activated.

How do you guys know your bios was flashed? I have no idea if they did mine when I sent it in for hinge repair. thanks.
