recently a problem araised regarding cracked screen hinge on eamchines m680x series notebook, to determine the number of cracked screen hing owners out of total number of emachines notebook owners, the poll has been created.
To determine whether your screen hing is cracked or not, please close your screen and look at the notebook from rear side.
-
-
Hinges aren't cracked, but the tension is definetely getting looser and looser every day. It's beginning to worry me very much actually.
-
Many times, the tension will slack as the notebook sees more and more use.
If it becomes that the screen will not stay up on its own, then you have a defect, and should send the system in for repair. -
That is scary thinking the tension might all be gone and the notebook would not be able to stay open on its own.

No cracks and the tension seems to be just right, not too tight or loose.
Game On -
the left side hinge on my M6809 has a crack in it and it seems to widen with use and a crack in the right side has appeared, and has also began to widen and lengthen. I hope something can bedone maybe a redesign of the chasis or better plastic? possibly more metal.
-
Just from the responses, it sounds like there is a hinge problem, or there isn't.
That would seem to indicate a single or multiple bad batches. Let's see how much of a response comes through on the poll...remember, the more responses, the more accurate the results. -
Who posted the vote for another series? I think that, if the problem is with all eMachines lines, and not just the m6xxx line, that the problem is more widespread...by the way, the 6410 is from a very similar shell from Arima.

I would just have Best Buy swap it out.
-
i already voted for not having a crack but now i do, i've only had it for like two weeks which means i can return it to best buy, should i or should i just have them replace it cause i have tehextended warrenty?
emachines M6809 -
i'd say return it becuase it will probably happen again
-
Hopefully a better Model will come out from Emachines that has been redesigned and has a better chassis, or maybe they should just switch ODM's. I wonder if VoodooPC M860 users are getting the Hinge cracks, i dont see any of them mentioning it the M860 by the way uses the same shell From Arima. as the Emachines M6XXX series.
-
Kcmoore,
I agree with Ajvett. Just return it. You are lucky to still have an option of getting out of this Emachine mess. For most of us, its too late. From my own experience with a bad RAM, from this cracked-hinge issue, and from other similar posts, it seems to me that Emachine notebooks have real shody workmanship. And they compliment that by having lousy service. -
i already sent in the mail in rebates and got the best buy reward points in the mail, does anyone know what i am supposed to do concering these thigs in the event that i return it.
emachines M6809 -
Some of the shell parts are after-manufacture add ons. By the results so far, it would seem that certain batches are affected, rather than the whole line.
By the way, I agree that tech support for eMachines has not handled this problem very well. But, let us remember, in most of the cases that this problem has occured, actual function of the machine has not been affected. What about the Dells that spark and catch on fire? What about the HP machines that need to be recalled because of faulty RAM? This is the first problem that has occured with these machines. I would direct my anger at the shoddy tech "support" rather than the machines themselves. I guarantee that HP would not treat its customers this way. For that matter, neither would Dell.
I do not think it is a design flaw, as each and every computer in this line would be affected if it were. It could come down to something stupid, like the torque on one of the assembly robots or on the assembly line set too high. This could result in the checkered results we have seen so far.
I also made this post sticky, as I believe it is important for eMachines owners and prospective owners to know the score. -
Why dont some of us contact Arima? www.arima.com.tw and see what they have to say? its worth a shot

do you guys think that any of emachines stuff reading these posts or other related posts in other sites?
what i suggest, that the moderator of this forum sends an email to emachines tech support or management inviting them to have a look on whats going, thus we might be successful to deliver the problem to the management and make them involved and concerned more about our suffer.
there is anothr poll i will post it later and depending on the outcome of the situation and the solution, which i hope it would be of help to us.
what do you guys think? -
Well, for what it is worth I sent an email to emachines regarding the screen crack as well. The twist is, I do not actually own one (yet?) but was strongly considering a purchase of the 6809/11 in the near future before I heard about the screen hinge cracks and their lack of support. I do not know if it means they will take me more seriously or less, but I thought I would give it a try.

If you guys want to have a look at some pictures of the cracked hinge on the M680x follow this link:
http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=29937
Most of the crack are at the same spot. I have a M6809 and it developed a cracked hinge after one month. Let's hope it is only a cosmetic crack (cheap plastic?) and nothing worst. -
well i returned mine, got all but 60 bucks back. I think it was a good deal. i wish they would get this fixed so i can go buy another one.
emachines M6809 -
First of all, I think everybody needs to realize (once again) that, while the support from eMachines has been horrible, the issue at hand does not effect the actual operation of the computer, unlike other recalls recently (namely, HP and its RAM sticks).
Secondly, as the poll goes, not everyone (myself included) has this crack on his/her machine whatsoever. Please be responsible when stating your beliefs. So far, in fact, it is two to one no damage to damage, thus indicating my previous belief that this is a batch or multiple batch error, and not a line-wide issue.
Thirdly, I received a response from eMachines:
"Thank you for contacting eMachines.
"I see that you are inquiring if eMachines is aware of the issue with eMachines notebook that has cracks in the hinge covers and if there is any plan to fix this issue.
"I am glad you took the time to write us and inform us regarding this issue with eMachines notebook.
"This issue is already escalated to the right person in the department and it is currently under research and discussion for possible resolution.
"In addition, we are aware of this issue and we found our that there are many possible causes of this issue:
- Twisting the notebook screen on its hinges
- Closing the lid on a pencil or pen left on the keyboard
- Closing the lid down with great amount of pressure
- Holding the notebook by its screen and not holding it with two hands
"Thank you for taking time and informing us regarding this information.
"Should you require further assistance with your eMachines system, please feel free to send another message. Your comments and suggestions are welcome.
Sincerely,
Diana"
There you have it, guys...IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!! We will see if eMachines actually does do anything about it. I will send another email after this weekend to try to get some answers.

This could be true, but they are taking into account desktops and other laptop lines. That is why it is important for as many people to vote so that we can get the most accurate count possible. If any friends have the machine, whether it is damaged or not, please direct them to this thread so that they can vote; it is open to everyone.
-
Well, apparetnly they are somewhat more worried about people whose money they do not have yet. I received a reply very quickly. Two in fact, though they were pretty much the same. (posted below) Clearly all of you have NOT been holding your notebook with two hands. Clearly this is all caused by user error and is only a <1% problem! javascript:insertsmilie('[ ]')
Thank you for contacting eMachines.
I see that you would like some information whether there are known issues
associated with our notebook computers.
I appreciate your effort in seeing through our side of the topic you would
want to clear.
Honestly, I have also been hearing feedback about the said reports, however,
as a Technical Support agent, never have I encountered myself such issue
about cracks. Not even once, that is to say.
According to our research, over a million of eMachines notebook that was
being sold every year, only 1% has this issue with our notebook. However,
the given information is already escalated to the right department and will
discuss this issue for possible resolution.
There are many possible causes of this issue.
- Twisting the notebook screen on its hinges
- Closing the lid on a pencil or pen left on the keyboard
- Closing the lid down with great amount of pressure
- Holding the notebook by its screen and not holding it with two hands
To allow eMachines to ensure customer satisfaction, computers are not out in
the market until they have been through rigorous testing. In case like
this, we render repairs if it is a factory defect or for parts replacements
and the system is under warranty.

I know I did, now Best Buy can cause i don't have it anymore.
returned emachines M6809 -
I voted no crack, but today I have a crack! Emachines will not issue a return as of yet!
-
Has anyone without the extended warranty from emachines and best buy managed to change their notebook to a new one? Would Best Buy swap a new notebook on the spot even if you don't have their warranty? The one year warranty from emachines says it does not cover cosmetic damage.
-
I just bought a 6809 2 days ago. I actually picked up one of BB's last floor models as they are closing out the product line, and got what I think was a good deal on it. The notebook did not have a crack on it when I bought it, but now, a hairline hinge crack has shown up on the fan side. Seeing as the notebook was a floor model, according to BB, the e-machines warranty was void, so I went ahead and got the BB extended warranty. I also asked specifically about the hinge crack problem before I bought the machine, and they said they would have no problem giving me a replacement if the crack showed up within one year of buying it. It was kind of funny, of the 2 floor models they had left, the one I didnt buy already had a crack in the hinge.
-Morgan -
I have a 4 week old m2350 with cracks on the left side. I wonder if it the same screen as the m6809? Should i send it back to Best Buy or to E-Machines? (i do not have an extended warranty
-
your probably SOL my friend As stated before Emachines does not cover Cosmetic Defects and since your passed the Bestbuy 14 Day return period i dont know what else to suggest. Or its a long shot but u could call Emachines Tech support and maybe u could get someone that hasnt heard of the Cracked hinge issue and just give u an RMA and send u a box to get your notebook repaired. But remember Its a long shot

I've had my m6809 for about 4 months and have traveled at least 20,000 miles with it and still no crack. I have resigned myself to the inevitable possibility that I will develop a crack eventually, but so far, so goodÂ…
Mookie -
if they do indeed have a plan what do u think it will consist of? issueing a recall, Getting free repairs or issueing refunds.

The only thing people can do as of now is to have there LCD replaced many people wont opt for that it takes time and theres more of a chance of people getting LCD's with stuck or dead pixels, thats why iam not sending mine in just gonna wait it out. I guess
-
I'm one of those that did not get the extended warranty. I'll have to wait it out too and hope that emachines come up with something. Has anybody's cracked hinge gotten worst? Mine has remained the same for about two weeks now even with regular use. I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping that the right hinge doesn't crack too. I have a funny feeling it will appear sooner or later.
-
i have Hinge cracks on both sides mine have Widend but have since stopped im not worrying about it untill the new Models come out.
-
two M6809 have the same problem, the left side hinge has a crack, maybe heat is the reason
-
i just got my Second M6811 and a Crack in the left hinge has Formed not even 1 days use out of it What is going on EMachines Needs to get there act together.
-
I would like to know what 64 bit Athlon notebook is comparable to the M68xx series in features and price. If the M68xx series notebooks are cracking with one day of usage, its time to start looking elsewhere.
-
I've not yet found a notebook that can match the M68xx in terms of price and features. I think that's why most of us bought it. With this cracked hinge appearing after A DAY??!! That is a bit too much!If emachines still insist that the cracked hinge is only a cosmetic damage or return it every other day for a replacement, then we better tell everybody to stop buying emachines till they fix the problem. [ !] Maybe even avoid Gateway since they are the owners of emachines.
