Just went to the eMachines website to see if anything new was coming up to replace the 6811, and they only have one notebook listed on the website. The only laptop featured on the site is the eMachines M5405. They used to have a dropdown menu full of machines for sale. Now just one. What up with that? Have they pulled the entire hinge cracking line off the market? Are they going out of business?

The Arima based emac 68xx line seems to be continued as the Gateway 74xx series, with the 7422 being the latest model. It's similar to the 6811, but has 1Gb memory, a 5400rpm drive, 8x dual-layer optical drive, 125Mbps wireless, and the ultrabright screen. It looks like we will see it soon in Canada, considering the aggressive price drop this week for the 6811 and 7405 at Futureshop and BestBuy. From what I read in the forums, EMachines will continue to offer the value-oriented 54xx models.

Whats the deal with the 9550 Radeon - is this lower grade than the 9600?

The numbers suggest that it would be the case but in reality [?]

Tell it like it is...NOT how it should be :)

What would be a good replacement for the eMachines 6811? I'm looking to exchange mine because of the hinge problem. I can't ignore it anymore. Staying with the AMD 64 chip would dictate that any replacement would almost have to be a Compaq. How bout the Compaq Presario R3470 AMD Athlon 64? Anyone seen it and what are your thoughts on Compaq machines in general? Thanks for any info. Paul.

I think the hinge problem has been resolved for the new Gateway 7422s, and in the US (BB) they have been priced at the same level as the 6811s. Does FutureShop have a replacement option in their extended warranty?

Last year Gateway bought out computer manufacturer eMachines. eMachines was known for its low prices and Gateway continued to release laptops under the eMachines brand even after the take over. But now Gateway is making a huge push and focus on selling laptops for 2005 and with their new offerings of budget notebooks combined with higher priced top performance notebooks it seems the eMachines branding will be dropped and only Gateway laptops will be released going forward.

Recently we noticed that on the eMachines website there was only one notebook left being displayed, this happened to be the eMachines m5405 (http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_M5405). So we asked Gateway why products were disappearing from the eMachines.com website and got the following response from a spokesperson:

"We're focusing all of our resources behind building the Gateway notebook brand right now, so we don't have any immediate plans to introduce any new notebooks under the eMachines brand in the near future. However, we span the complete range of features/value/form factors within our Gateway brand of notebooks, which is offered widely by major retailers in addition to all of our direct channels."

So essentially what all this means is that Gateway will simply be releasing budget notebooks under their own branding and it doesn't make sense for them to confuse consumers any longer by selling under the eMachines brand. This is a good move by Gateway as the notebook market continues to grow. Now is the time to really establish themselves in the notebook arena, HP is stumbling and IBM is at least in a precarious position as they attempt to transition their PC division to Lenovo of China.

Stay away from emachines notebooks. emachines service is bad. I have 2 emachine notebooks - both need repairs. sent one in and it has been in for over about a month (after they told me it would only take 5 days). I have made 4 phone calls so far. on the 2nd call they told me they were replacing the motherboard; on the 3rd call they said they were doing final quality assurance testing then on the 4th call they said they are waiting for a motherboard!!! And now they tell me I have to wait 2 days so they can email their warehouse to find out current status. I'm not the only one. read http://www.complaints.com/may2001/complaintoftheday.may17.13.htm and http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/emachine.htm for more complaints. I've had a similar experience!

I don't know about anyone else, but my Emachines m6809 runs wonderfully. I've had for almost 4 months and there are no problems, the hinges didn't even crack. I'm guessing some people have better luck with their laptops than others.
