There is a little confusion with which RAM chips work with eMachines M68xx systems. There have been reports that certain brands, such as Kingmax, do not work properly.

If you have installed additional RAM, please reply to this thread with the following information:

    Which Brand?
    What amount? (512MB, 1GB)
    Speed? (PC3200, 2700, 2100)
What retail outlet or online retailer?
    Which M68xx model? (M6805, M6807, etc)
    Date of upgrade?

Thanks for all of your help on this one. This should help others who want to upgrade in the future.

Are there any differences b/w the m68xx compatibilities with ram? If the 1GB stick from Fry's/Outpost that mecdave is referring to is working in the m6809 should it work in my m6811?

Thanks mecdave. Good info. That's what I thought but wasn't sure. Fry's sounds like a deal.

Any word on the 1 GB stick of DDR PC2700 stick of Transcend memory from newegg.com for about $236? I was wondering if anyone has tried this memory in any of the M68XX laptops.

I bought a Geil 512 chip from newegg for $99 and it runs fast and with no problems. I bought one of the first m6809 notebooks out and every other one I checked it against has different stickers and different brand meomory chips.

I’m using the “PREMIUM MEMORY” from the Fry’s Outpost site. So far…, sooo good! I’m using my M6811 on battery power, and I see a notable increase in speed (it feels like its plugged in). I’ve always hated to run off of battery power due to the drop in speed. I’m almost afraid to plug it in. This stuff works! I’ll give it two e’s up!

Can we put PC3200 RAM into these notebooks?
Will we see a speed increase????

    Thanks,

Yes you can and you will see a speed increase... but nobody really knows just how much yet. Of course, you will need to change both RAM strips to PC3200 in order for you to run at that speed. If you do it... tell us the benchmark results! :)

Is it better to the the bigger stick of memory on the inside of the notebook instead of the the outside accessable cover? The stick of 256 inside the M6805 you have to remove the keyboard to get at is. But I believe that is the one also closet to the processor. SO does it make a differece?

Only if you plan on upgrading the RAM again at a later date...then I'd suggest the bigger on inside so that, if you do upgrade, you need only swap out the accessbile one. Otherwise.. it shouldn't make a difference.

Be careful, the motherboard might support only PC2700 RAM. I think some research is in order.

Bought a 512 module from Kingston for the user-accessile slot in my M6805 last summer and it has given no problems. Looks like they have a 1 gig version available, although it doesn't show up if you search by emachines model, so no telling whether the larger size would work too.

This may be a dumb question, but if I want to upgrade the RAM in my M6809 (and thanks for the guidance on chips that will work), and I DON'T want to mess with the less-than-accessible 256MB module, won't it seem kind of strange to add either 512MB or 1GB? What I mean is, you rarely hear of people saying that they have 764MB, or 1.25 GB of memory. I remember in the old days when memory modules had to be in pairs, and they had to be matched. Does this no longer apply?

Bottom line: is there any problem with adding either 512 or 1GB to the existing 256?

Installed Kingston 1GB PC2700 RAM into the user accessible slot as it was suggested by some folks here that Kingston works fine. I bought it at fry's outpost:

    http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4389075?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

No problem, everything works smooth. Ran test benchmark SiSoftware Utilities to see if there are any problems - everything seems perfect. Photoshop grabs about 380MB, Dreamweaver, Visual Studio - all memory hungry softwares run nice without swapping now even when you run several at the same time! Games like Half Life 2 run faster without swapping. I love it. :)

Now, the only thing left for the ultimate paradise is either Hitachi 7K100 7200rpm 100GB hard drive or Seagate Momentus 7200rpm 120GB. Neither is still in the market though. There are smaller versions of Hitachi - 60GB and 80GB - they have recently hit the market.

I have an M6807 with Windows XP/SP2 (bios updated a couple of months ago)...just found this deal on 1G RAM at Tigerdirect.com...Any idea if this is compatible?

I am also thinking about upgrading my current processor Athlon 64 Mobile 3000+ with the Athlon 64 Mobile 3700+ (62W, not the DTR). Any feedback?

    Anyone upgrade their internal speakers?

    Upgrading all RAM...

I have a M6809 and want to max-out the RAM. I can easily replace the user-accessible strip with a 1GB SODIMM, but I want to replace the motherboard SODIMM as well.

What is the procedure for removing the keyboard?

I assume that 2gb of RAM is the max that this system will address, correct?

I've seen mixed results with the M6805 with PC3200. My question is, does it really work? I'm thinking of upgrading both slots with a 1X1 GB Module each, but I want to know if I should stick with PC2700, or if at all possible, am I able to go with PC3200?

    Thanks.
