My DVDRW on my eMachine 6809 will not read anything, the drive turns, the light flashes and the device manager says it is performing properly. I deleted and reloaded the drivers, and performed a system restore all to no avial. Does anyone have any other ideas. Emachines said to send it in. Sending back is a huge pain. I am in Iraq. I saw where someone else put something else in and it worked. Does that void the warranty? Emachines said they could not send me one. Because it was not possible to replace except at factory.

Do you have QuickTime installed? I had this problem recently, and tracked down the issue to QT. I uninstalled QT, did a system restore, got back my drivers and then reinstalled QT, works fine now.

Maybe a reformat is in order. I know that sounds extreme though...

Good Luck in what you decide to do.

What drive is in there now? You may want to try to update the firmware and/or ide drivers. Doing upgrades depends on what eMachines considers a user upgradeable part. Generally, memory and hard drives are considered user upgradeable. You may consult with eMachines on this. I replaced an optical drive on a Compaq Presario. HP said it did not void the warranty. Be careful of what drive you purchase. You have to make sure it fits, and the master and slave settings are correct. Good Luck.

What drive is in there now?

The M6811 has the HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040N optical drive in it.

The Device Manager says the optical drive is a Slimtype DVDRW SDW-431S, however on further research I believe it is a Lite On DVDRW SDW-431S. Quicktime is installed and has been. This new problem showed up when I installed a program to optimize satallite performance, which is how I get internet. I uninstalled that program, deleted and reloaded the drivers in safe mode, did a sys restore to two months prior and checked the bios to ensure it was set correctly. eMachines said they could not send me another drive, something about how it connects to the mother board and that I would have to send it in. I believe I have solved the problem for now. I am going to purchase an external dvd/cd rw drive and worry about the warranty issue when I return home. Thank you all for your time and help. Still open to any suggestions.

I would also try to update anything you can. Ide drivers, bios, 4in1 drivers, etc. Any chance you can do a custom install on the satellite program? Maybe you could leave out the part that is messing everything up, if it is not needed. Good Luck.
