I am doing a system restore on my M6805 (passing the notebook along to someone else). I want to erase all data and restore the stuff that came with it (+ the Master File Table is corrupt).

Now I inserted Disc 1 of the Restore CD. I restarted. After bios stuff, I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor and the CD Drive seems to be reading the CD but then loads into Windows.

    Anyway to fix this?

Doesn't sound like you're booting off the optical drive. Go into BIOS and make sure it's listed. Also, you often have to hit a key to use selective boot, not sure what the prcoess is on eMach.

    Hey,

I am having a very similar problem with my Acer Extensa 2000.

At first Nero and other burning programs would not recognise the drive, however, windows would register it as a DVD-RW...WTF?

After that, the drive began to no longer read CDs but is able to read and play DVDs fine...again, WTF?

I have also tried to find firmware updates for this drive...it is the Lite-On Slimtype SDW-431S-(SM) (as listed in the BIOS).

If anyone has had any success in either updating the firmware or perhaps even replacing the drive, please let me know!

If you replaced it, what did you get, have you had any problems afterwards?

If there is anyone else out there with some suggestions on how to rectify the problem without having to replace the drive, I would be glad to hear them!

    Cheers,

    Bob.

That key is 'F8.' Hit it rapidly from startup until you are taken to the selective boot menu.

thanks to everyone who replied. I figured it out a couple of days after. The lens was just dusty. I remembered that just a week ago, I did some dusting with canned air.

MC Bob that might be your problem too. Dust in the lens.
