hi,
I bought my eMachines m6805 in May 2004, and the warranty has expired. I use it quite a bit and have had good luck until last week.
Without warning, the screen displayed a bunch of wild colors, and then it returned to Word file I was reading. I got a message that an error had occured. The screen resolution had been set to minimum resolution (something like 640 x 480) and 4 bit color.
After the error, I restarted, and it seemed fine. However, it has happened over and over again and caused random shutdowns. I tried different drivers (I normally use Omegas), but that didn't help. Using system restore to go back to old settings only makes the error occur less often. I'm in the middle of finals and cannot reinstall windows right now.
Has anyone seem this issue? Does it look like a hardware problem or a software problem? Any help would be great.

just to update for others who may have a similar problem. The motherboard/graphics card was bad. Reinstalling Windows did nothing to restore functionality.

I have the same problem.
Now if our 9600 went bad, what do we do now?
Any idea if its fixable amd/or how much it will cost? -
Call the support number on the bottom of your laptop. Have a pen ready and take note of the new number that you will get in the message at the begining. You will probably get refered to another number by the support agent if you are out of warranty. When you get the corporate support number for out-of-warranty repair you will be told that it will cost you $244.00 US to replace the motherboard. This is apparently the only way they fix these laptops now. Total mobo replacement even if it's not the motherboard. Hopefully it will cost you less...
