Well im still running good old XP on this old gal and i was wondering if I should put win 7 on her? I have upgraded ram and HDD so it works well, but the XP version i have on there is starting to get really, really slow. So ill probibly take the laptop apart and clean it really well maybe even put some new thermal Paste on the CPU.

But I have Windows 7 on my main PC but how would it run on the M6811. I primaraly use the laptop as a secondary computer, for gaming. You know 2 MMORPG accounts and I can play 2 chars at once. What do you all think? Or should I just reinstall XP?

Yes, It will run but I think you will not be happy. I have both the M6811 and 7422GX that are both still hanging with me even through the "overheating/shutdown" problems.

I put Ubuntu on the M6811 which runs well. You could also run Puppy but I save Puppy for older machine (GW Solo 9550) and virtual machines. The 7422GX currently has a cracked screen after I loaned it out but it will be getting Linux also or 2003 Server.

A fresh install of XP will run faster if you have had XP on there for a while and W7 will run but after I put W7 on a Dell D810, I think it will be a little dissapointing.

I tried Vista 64 on the M6811 an could not take the performance even with Aero off. W7 is more light weight than Vista but let's face it. The processor is "middle aged" and needs a more mature OS. W7 is really designed for the newer machines and you may have to wrestle with getting the drivers correct.

The opinions in this post are my own and do not reflect the opinions of my employer. :)

I have to disagree with Eunix on this one. I have a 6811 with 2 gig ram and a 120 gig 7200 drive. I used this machine for all of my Vista 64 beta testing, and it worked perfectly throughout all drivers right from MS. I then used it for the windows 7 beta and again it worked great. The only thing that never worked with either OS was the modem (no drivers). While this machine is getting long in the tooth, It was way ahead of its time. It still scores above most integrated video laptops. I get 4.3p , 4.9m, 3.4bg, 4.5gg, 5.9hd

Well, I did the same thing (upgraded the HD to a 7200 rpm drive and memory upgrade) to both my m6811 and 7422gx and tested the Vista RC editions before the actual release.

I used the vendor drivers and ran the 64 bit version. Although the software ran fine, what I found was that the system would become sluggish to my taste after a couple of hours of running. Especially after the screen saver kicked in and I restored from that.

As I type this response, I am on the M6811 running Ubuntu using Chrome as my browser, and the system is more responsive than the windows stuff.
