My M6811, after many years of good service recently started overheating to the point it would turn off itself. I just ignored all that until one day, someting happened, and now the screen is covered with symmetric columns of pixels. It is not the LCD, because hooking up external display yields the same results. It is not Windows problem because the problem is there all the time - even when system starts up.
I opened it up - no lint or dust inside. I did notice that the heatsink on the motherboard (not the CPU) is hot to the touch. I am affraid something in the Video Card burnt up.
Any ideas how to fix this? I am open to any suggestions...
If all else fails I will try re-soldering different Video Card IC if I find one.

You aren't going to be able to solder on a new GPU...you're talking about needing an entirely new motherboard pulled from a working M6811.

$220 flat rate from Arima..BTDT 2 years ago. Call Gateway for shipping box, if service still availble then 10 day turn agound...or search EBay for parts?

Not worth it imo.

I have a similar issue with almost 5 year old M6811. It was running hot for quite some time until I blew out the vent earlier this year which brought it back to normal temp. A few days ago the screen started to go pixelated in columns when it was idle for a while in XP. Today the graphics corruption also occurs when booting, with different colours and symbols. So I assume that that ATI chip is done, and it can not be fixed reasonably easy.
Too bad though, I just upgraded memory and got a new optical drive less than a year ago. May sell these parts off if anyone is interested.
