Ok, I've read all the threads on this I could find. I've been toying around with it for about 2 weeks now, in hopes that I might be able to figure it out myself. So being at my wits end:
I've installed the powernow driver in w2k compatability mode as described. I've tried it several times and it never changes anything. I don't get any of the powernow technology or high performance anything.
Pleas help

The PowerPlay video setting used by default is keeping the CPU speed down. Go to the advance video setting and change the PowerPlay settings for "High Battery" to "Optimal Performance" and change "low battery settings apply..." to 50%. After you make these changes, the CPU will change to 1.8GHz when needed. Good Luck!
-
I played around with the video card settings like you said, and still nothing. There's still no "powernow" options/tabs in the power options, and it still drops to 800mhz when on battery power.
-
Try reinstalling PowerNow. The Power Scheme you shoud be using is "eMachine Power Management". The default for PowerNow is automatic, which is correct. Did you have a PowerPlay tab to change the Video Speed Control settings?
-
Maybe you and I arent on the same page here. I'm trying to get the proc to run at 1.8 ghz when on battery.
Every other post I've read says the power scheme needs to be set to "always on" and there's supposed to be something about high performance mode. I've got the always on part, but I dont see any high performance mode or powernow options.
I tried what you said about powerplay, and it didnt effect anything. -
I am running my m6805 on battery right now, and it goes to 1.8GHz when necessary. Use the AMD Powernow! Dashboard to see a dynamic representation of what the speed is. Even when plugged in, it will not stay at 1.8Ghz unless needed.
-
Mine NEVER runs at 1.8 ghz on battery, and I dont need the dashboard to be able to tell because the performance drop is so drastic. Although, I do have it installed, and I have used it to verify that the voltage drops (on battery) and dosent come back up regardless of what I'm doing.
Besides all that... I dont expect it to be running at 1.8ghz yet because I still cant get the powernow driver to give me the high performance mode option!!! -
I have the exact same problem as Birdbleed. I too tried all the suggestions I can find on the forum, i.e. install Powernow 3.04 in 2000 compat. mode, reboot, uninstall, re-install, install the latest AMD 64-bit driver, uninstall, re-install ... Nothing works. I do not get the Powernow tab when I open the power option.
I'm running XP Pro SP1, does this makes a difference? For those who get the powernow to work, are you running the same OS? I did not upgrade from XP Home to Pro, instead, I blown the XP Home and install XP Pro fresh.
Also, in the power scheme, I do not get the "eMachine Power Management" option.
Thanks.

I'm using the factory installed xp home with the latest updates.

I got this to work, there is a powernow tab in the power options. When I right click on "my computer" and select"properties" it still shows that the computer is running at 800 mhz (whatever the real # is 766?) on batteries. Does power now just make sure that if needed the power is there or should properties be showing 800 mhz? What is the AMD dashboard that is being referred to in other posts? Thanks.
-
Have you got "always on" and "high performance" selected? The way I understand it, it's supposed to make it be 1.8ghz all the time, not just "when you need it". (I may be wrong... I havent had the fortune of getting it to work at all on mine so I cant be sure)
The dashboard is a little program that gives you the cpu voltage, cpu speed, and battery savings in nifty little graph. I guess it's supposed to be more reliable than the right click > properties way of checking your cpu speed. -

That's how I did the install, multiple times... Nothing -
Thanks, where do you find the dashboard? is it another application or is it on my computer if I installed powernow? Incidentally, here's how I got it to work- get powernow for athlon 64 bit from amd's site. Once you download it, right click on the icon for properties, and set it to run in windows 2000 compatibility mode. Then, run it. When you go into you rpower options in the control panel, there should be a powernow tab. i think, if I read correctly, powernow actually adjusts your processor constantly depending on need so that it preserves battery life. After all, it seem silly to run at 1.8 ghz to type in word, but very limiting t edit audio at the slower speed. ASnyway, hope my little bit of knowledge helps and if anyone can tell me where "dashboard" is (besides in the car...) that would be great.

Hmmm ... Not sure what I did exactly ... I tried uninstall the CPU driver and then use the driver that comes with the recover DVD. Now it seems to work at 1.8GHz even in battery mode. I test it by running Folding@Home which will drive the CPU to 100%. However, I still does not see the PowerNow tab ...

Birdbleed, I owe you an apology! I traded in my m6805 for a m6809 when I found I had a cracked hinge, and I am now having the same problem you are! I ghosted my hard disk before the trade, so the only difference is the computer (cpu, dvd/cdrom, HD) and when I checked my m6809 using the old image, PowerNow was not there in the Power settings! I also tried Speedswith XP with and without the CPU driver and that did not work either to get full speed on DC. Services show AMD PowerNow running, but on DC, 100% cpu and .950V!
-
There's no need for an apology
I've been working on this since b4 I started posting here... Still nothing. Same here 800mhz and .9 on battery -
Birdbleed, in on of the other forums (I don't remember which) they posted a reply from the designer of the machine from ARIMA. He said that this behavior is intentional because of concerns about the battery overheating.
-
Ya, I read that post too. I've also read about many people that have gotten it to work on the m6805. Don't know what to think now.
Maybe I'll concentrate on my cracked hinges for now -
Bird I have the same problem with 800MHz on battery. I've tried everything known to man. Attempted to return it to Best Buy only to be told that ALL mobile processors run at 800MHz on battery all the time.... After a heated debate with the uneducated technition, my only option was to return in with a 15% restocking fee...I declined.
Awesome laptop, and rarely am I unplugged but still...I paid for a laptop that works perfectly all the time...not perfectly when it's plugged in. -
are you guys sure this is the M6805 NOT the M6809? from what I have heard, this process won't work on the M6809.
-
Absolutly positive, I have an eMachines m6805. I've contacted eMachines, but haven't received a response yet...
-
100% positive.
If anyone finds out anything PLEASE post it here -
I'm going to attempt to take mine back to Best Buy. I attempted that before but the technitions were inept in understanding how mobile processors work. The lead technition told me "It is impossible for any processor to change speeds on the fly". Sigh...
I'm going armed wtih AMD's Mobile Athlon 64 processor brief explaining that the Mobile 64 should switch speeds depending on load....we'll see how that goes.
Don't you love it when people who no know nothing about computers get put in a position of power? -
Good luck man. A friend of mine tried to take his back to best buy and they wouldnt take it back without the 15% restocking fee. And that was within the 2 weeks they supposedly give you for returns. He and I have both had the same problem with incompetent employees... I think I'm about done with BB.

at fist i also thought it was hopeless, but now i have finally gotten powernow to install properly in windows xp. i tried it first on the original laptop i got and it never worked. then i noticed a crack on the hinge of the case so i brougt it into best buy and they gave me an exchange for a brand new m6805. on the new one, i got it installed on the first try. this time i did things a little different. instead of first installing the powernow, i first installed the newest athlon 64 processor driver. here are the exact steps i took to get it to work.
1. download and install the newest athlon64 processor driver.(version 1.1.0.14) http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/cpudriver.EXE
2. restart computer
3. download and install the powernow software version 3.0.4. make sure you right click and choose the windows 2000 compatibility. http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/AMDPowernowver3.04.EXE
4. restart computer
now look in the power settings. there is now a powernow technology tab. and when i check the speeds it now adjusts when on battery and is not stuck at 800mhz.
also i'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but you might have to try and remove all the registry files that have to do with powernow and the precessor driver before starting in case you have messed up in the past. in my case it had not messed up in the past and i was ok. good luck guys and tell me if this works or not. -
I took a look through the registry but I couldnt really figure out what entrys I should delete. I tried installing it exactly like you described anyway, again, and it still dosent work..
-
That's exactly how I did it wenhan, and I still had no luck.
M6805 800mhz on battery.. cant get it to work
