First, let me provide you with a quick history of my problems with my eMachines M6809 notebooks. I first bought one on 5/14/04 from the Best Buy in West Des Moines, Iowa. I did not buy a service plan. After a few days, I discovered the dial-up modem was not functional and I exchanged it for a new laptop within the 14-day return period.

Close to a month later, I discovered the cracked hinges. I talked to eMachines, and at the time they were still trying to determine whether this was a cosmetic issue or not. They asked that I send mine in to be inspected, and they would let me know whether the repair would be covered by warranty.

About two weeks later, eMachines told me that the repair would be covered by the warranty. They said if I wanted the computer back sooner, they would send me a new one, otherwise I would still have to wait for the repair. So, I took a new laptop. Very soon after I received the replacement, it too started to crack. Their explanation was that they must have sent me a laptop that had not been fitted with a new monitor by mistake. So, I sent in the new laptop for repair.

I got it back in remarkably short time. Only four or five days, including shipping time. However, the rubber screw covers were missing off the monitor, and the monitor was not fully put together. I had to snap the edges into place. I emailed eMachines about the screw covers but received no response.

This repair held up for about a month before I noticed new cracks. I did not want to send it to eMachines again because it seemed they were replacing the bad monitors with more bad monitors. And as I am now at school, I couldn't afford to be without it for any period of time. So, in a last ditch, hopeless attempt, I called Best Buy--nearly five months after my original purchase and with no service plan. The girl I talked to said I could exchange it for a different brand because it was a model defect. She said it did not matter that I didn't have a service plan.

I came into Best Buy the next day (10/5/04) and went to the customer service counter. I explained what the girl told me on the phone. This employee was somewhat hesitant, but I simply said "On the phone I was told there would be no problem, so I made the long trip here. I was very clear that I had no service plan and I was told that I could still exchange this for a new brand."

So, they let me. And I am now writing this on my new Compaq R3360. If you have an eMachines M6800 from Best Buy and are unsatisfied, I urge you to try this. I obviously got very lucky, but if you try different stores and different employees, you could be successful. Good luck everyone.

I was trying exactly the same thing but they wouldn't let me do it without me losing my extended warranty.
It's stated in BB extended warranty that if you swap your machine with something other than same brand
    you'll loose your extended warranty.
I ended up getting another M6811 to replace my cracked/flickering one. Hopefully this one is not going
    to be bad.
