    Hi All -

I'm new to this forum and I am hoping for some help installing xp pro on my new E-Machines M6809. I want to format the drive for a fresh install. I've done this on other computers in the past. My question is what exactly I need to do after the format and install of XP pro to have all the correct drivers and such for the laptop?

    Thanks!
    Surferboy

if they didn't include a CD, then try going to the website for EMachines (www.emachines.com) and searching for downloads. If they're not there, you'll have to call their tech support and ask for such a CD.

The computer came with the cd and the E-Machines restore DVD. What I am wanting to do is do a fresh install of XP PRO. I don't want alot of the softare that came with it, and would rather run XP PRO which I own over XP Home. What I am wondering is a list of steps for what I need to update after the install to be fully up to date with the drivers for this laptop (M6809).

    Thanks!

    Surferboy,
It's fairly straightforward. I think the only proble you may run into is getting the video drivers installed. I upgraded to xp pro instead of doing a clean install because I wanted to keep powerdvd. Most of the software that came w/the computer will not be available to you if you clean install. I think everything will go smoothly based on my experience in doing the upgrad(not clean install). But, I believe at some point you will run into an issue with the Via 4in1 chipset drivers and then the video drivers. But, I was able to resolve them and so was my friend who has an m6809.

    Hi,
I'm also new to this forum, and will get a M6809 after a week. also want to format the drive as NTFS for clean install xp pro. But I found many issue will be happened when install that, so I want somebody can give me some advise. I plan to use software backup all drivers first before installation, also download the via 4 in 1 drivers and ati omega driver. Is it sufficient for that? maybe someone could give a step by step guide? thanks a lot.

XP Pro installed fine on a fresh install and I've been running fine for 2 days.

The main thing to do is install the omega drivers right away after xp pro installs. I used the latest omega drivers and did not need to install any other video drivers aftewards.

From the restore DVD I installed the all of these and they run fine:

    Audio

    CPU

    Modem

    TouchPad

    Wireless

I also overclocked the video card with atitool and am running 446 core / 230 memory.

This is a great laptop and running like a champ!

Wow, this is just what I needed! I too have bought the M6809 and I just picked up a new 7K60 7200 rpm 60G drive to load XP pro on. Could you all (surferboy especially) go into a bit more detail about the location of drivers you downloaded beyond what was on the DVD and the order you installed them? Thanks for blazing the trail on this. XP Home is ok, but good god, all that shovel-ware they included? I mean, how many people really still use CompuServe?

Hey scriscuoli...I just bought my M6809 and I want to swap out the HD to the one you just purchased as well. Also install XP Pro. Let me know how the HD install goes and I will follow this thread to see if surferboy can give us some tips on installing the OS with the drivers.

Be sure to install the Omega drivers right after install. Make note of what I said above from the restore DVD too. The link for the Omega drivers is:

    rad_w2kxp_omega_2536b (ATI) (Catalyst 4.4)

To overclock the ATI Card use:

Atitool Once installed let this run for a good hour to get yor numbers.

And then set the core and memory settings in radlinker in the Omega Panel.

My M6809 has been running great all week!

Oh My Freakin' God! Loaded XP Pro on the new drive in about 20 minutes! This drive screams. I've done the windows update for criticals, loaded the chipset drivers, then DX9, then the OMEGA Drivers. Without all that crap eMachines put on it, this machine is scary fast. Thanks to EVERYONE for great information.

I bought the drive from www.zipzoomfly.com and got free 2nd day air. I decided on the 7K60 from Hitachi/IBM.

What REALLY pisses me off though is that since I want to be able to swap back and forth between the old and new drives (I'm a s/w developer and will be installing the DirectX software development kit, which you NEVER want to do on a game machine, on the older drive) I called eMachines to see about getting a second drive cradle. They said they could only send one to me if I had broke the first one and sent it to them. So now, to swap drives I need to swap them in and out of the cradle as well. Anyone have any thoughts on how I can get a second cradle?

If you know anybody that services these notebooks, you may want to check with them to see if they can get one for you. Another way, if the cradle is plastic (this may not work) tell eMachines that for some reason the cradle has started to warp and you require a replacement. Since this is a User Replaceable part they may ship one to you.

These are the people that make the laptops for Emachines. Maybe you can get the cradle from them.

So all is well, but I just can't leave well enough alone. I went back to the 80G drive and partitioned it into a 50GB chunk which got XP Pro (for development work) and a 15GB chunk which I loaded with an evaluation copy of Windows XP 64-bit addition. The Hyperion chipset drivers work like a charm but I'm at a loss for other drivers (video, wireless, etc). You are severely discouraged from loading 32-bit drivers into a 64-bit OS so if anyone knows where I can get 64-bit ATI and broadcom drivers that would be cool. And as for the last 15GB of my drive? SUSE 64-bit Linux here we come :) Thanks again for all the help.

    Hi All,

I bought a M6805 last weekend and did a clean install of WinXP Pro (SP1) on it. I installed all the drivers from the restore DVD and everything works fine hardware wise. I do have couple of questions that some of you might be ale to answer.

    - How do you get the volume up/down buttons to work? All other buttons above the keyboard just seem to work except those two. I think I read somewhere that you can change the applications that load with those buttons ... where can I change that ?

    - How can I re-install PowerDVD that came bundled with this machine. I can't seem to find it on the restore DVD? There is however a sticker with S/N and CD key for it on the back of restore DVD's cover.

    TIA

You might try Voodoo or another reseller of the Arima Athlon laptop. They may be willing to sell you a hard drive tray.

Thanks for the advice on the the tray. I too have a stable xp-64 running but not much in the way of drivers. The good news is that the default VGA driver does more than 800x600 :) I still have about 10GB for Linux. I bought SUSE 9.1 (supports 64bit machines) from their own store only to have them send me an email a week later that they are back-ordered :( The site, however still says shipping today and will gladly take your money.

Not sure why anybody has any issues reloading after a format - XP Pro normally detects all of the hardware and then you can run as per normal and tweak with additional updates as an when you require them?

Presumably not all m68xx machines come with the single DVD? This has everthing nicely filed for easy installation.

I did a format and reinstall of XP Pro last week and the only minor niggle that I have is an error message for the multi-media card reader telling me that the xxxx.ini file failed to load.

The Media-card reader works perfectly though....if anybody has an idea about the card reader error feel free to let me know :)

I did load the latest Via drivers, Cats & ATI Tool ;)

Tell it like it is...NOT how it should be :)
