So last night I was using my laptop, played some generals, switched to tumblebugs then it just shut off. So I try to turn it back on. Won't turn on. Figured it was the power supply as it was making a cycling buzzing sound, so figured the battery had taken over then had just run out of juice can the power supply was bad. ( figured that would be odd cause it usually tells me when the battery was low, plus it was plugged in all night...whatever).
So I feel the back it's pretty hot so is the power supply. I notice that it has a electrical/burning smell to it. Thought that maybe it overheated. left it plugged into see maybe if I could get some charge to the battery. Felt the back was getting warm and the smell again. Only when it was plugged in. So I try to take it apart to see if there was a bad fuse or something. Couldn't figure out how to take it apart.
So I phone Emachines cause it's still under warranty. They are sending a box to send it back to them to look at it. Got the return number from the guy and he figures that it might be the transformer inside, heard of it happening a couple of times. I say thanks and hang up.
I have the laptop on my lap, taking out the hard drive cause it's easy to take out, modular and pulls out the front. So I pull it out and my dad ( who was watching me) says there is smoke coming from it. I look at it AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE!!!!! YES FIRE!
I had to blow it out. I think that it was around the video card area. Kinda freaked, a little sick to my stomach. to think that I now have a $2000 door stop, hoping to hell that the will fix it under warranty. I really don't have the faith right now in customer service with any company. I figure once you buy it you are on your own.
Not gonna put the drive back in.
Should have stuck with a DELL. Speaking of that I can get one for $37 a month lol.

They'll repair it. But the more troubling thing is that you paid $2000 for it. I really hope that's Canadian or something.

Hi Brian,
yeah it was about 1800 CAD. I hope that they'll fix it. Was reading and had read that the 6811 wasn't compatible with windows XP SP2. Any truth to that?

Not that I'm aware of.

I own an m6811. SP2 runs fine. There's no reason why it shouldn't. Some people are just stupid and because something went wrong, they automatically assume that it's because of their notebook model.
PS.... WinXP Pro x64 works like a dream too.... that is if you have all your drivers heh. (see 1280x800 thread to know what I mean.) -

Phoned them today. they replaced the motherboard and the LCD. Don't know why the LCD but I'm not complaining. At least it's repaired and on its way back. Wonder if they'll tell me what the problem was or what happened.
I just don't want it to happen again. -
That is a scary story for sure. I have a 6811 and it's been running about 16h each day since I bought it last November without problems. Keeping my fingers crossed.

That's really dangerous! I wonder if any other M6811 users have ever encountered this...you can't be the only one.
But, yeah, they'll fix it under warranty.
I suggest getting a nice cooling pad - preferrably an aluminum one. Try the Vantec ones. They do a good job of keeping the heat down.
FYI Fried M6811
