    Stock Specs
    Athlon 64-M 3000+ (1.8 Ghz) 1Gb L2 cache The M6809 has the 64-M 3200+ (2.0 Ghz)
    15.4" WXGA screen (1280 x 800)
60 GB 4200 rpm hard drive (80 GB for the 6809). Some people report getting a 5400 rpm one
Mobility Radeon 9600 pro 64 MB (dedicated memory)
    DVD/CD-RW combo (the 6807/6809 have a DVD burner/CDRW)
    2x256 (512) Samsung PC2700
6-in-1 Digital Media Manger (Compact Flash, Micro Drive, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital (SD), Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro)
802.11g wireless (via mini pci card)
4 X USB 2.0 ports, 1 Firewire port, 10/100 lan, 56K modem, mic jack, headphone jack, S-Video out,

    Drivers

    1. The OEM provided drivers are on Disc 3 of the restore CDs. This is particularly important if you want to install a different OS.

    2. Hot keys can't be mapped to other applications at the current time. However, some people are reporting that TweakUI from microsoft will let you do it.

    3. Viaarena.com has the latest drivers for your chipset.

    4. The ATI 9600 can use the latest Catalysts or Omegas.

    5. Realtek.com.tw has the latest drivers for your soundcard.

    6. Hot keys can't be mapped to other applications at the current.

    End user upgrades
Pictures were take from www.wereshark.com and hosted on my site with his permision.

    MEMORY
The memory is split into two modules. One is "user" accessible and the other is under the keyboard and may void your warranty if you replace it. It uses regular PC2700 SODIMM's so you can either replace the stock 256 mb stick that is located on the bottom with a 1 gb or 512 mb stick to increase your memory.

    Hard Drive
This is probably the biggest bottleneck in the laptop. 4200 RPM is very slow for a hard drive and these machines need a faster one to go along with the rest of the components.
The hard drive is located in the front middle and one or two screws to get it out. You can get any 9.5mm laptop drive 5400 or 7200 RPM to replace it with. You can either sell or get a 2.5" external USB/Firewire enclosure and use the old drive for backups.

    MISC
There is also a mini PCI slot located on the bottom of the laptop. Inside houses the wireless card.

User upgradeable parts that will probably void your warranty.[/B]

    CPU
The AMD A64-M 3000+ is also known as a DTR (Desktop replacement) and is 1.8Ghz whereas the normal desktop A64 3000+ is 2.0Ghz and has only 512mb of cache. The DTR's have 1Gb of L2 cache. There is a 3200+ and a 3400+ that will plug in easily to our machines. The CPU is in a standard ZIF socket.

As you can see in this pic the HSF is of the heat pipe veriety and has two fans, one for intake and one for exhaust.
In this pic you can see the ZIF socket with the CPU after the HSF has been removed.

    MEMORY (located under the keyboard)
There is one stick located under the keyboard and is pain to get to.
This pic shows the 6 in 1 card reader removed to gain better access to the internal memory slot.
    OVERCLOCKING

The video card is extremely over clockable. Stock speeds are 300mhz for the core and 200mhz for the memory. With some simple tools most people are reporting 400mhz+ on the core and 220mhz+ on the memory. (mine will do 435mhz core and 228mhz memory)

Atitool http://atitool.ocfaq.com/ is a program that you run and it will determine the max setting for both the core and memory. It takes awhile to run but is pretty accurate.

ATI Omega display drivers are a must. They are the certified ATI drivers included with a lot of utilities for the Radeon cards. The latest Omega driver can be downloaded from http://www.omegacorner.com/ and install just fine. Once installed and you open the control panel there is a tab called Radlink and there is where you can set you new core and memory speed.

Over clocking the CPU is a little trickier since there is no AGP/PCI bus lock (meaning you can lock the bus to 33/66mhz). When you increase the FSB on the CPU it will also increase it on the PCI/AGP bus as well. This will quickly put the PCI/AGP bus out of spec and cause anything from lockups to frequent restarts.

The utility preferred is called Clockgen and can be found at http://www.cpuid.com/clockgen.php Go to the Athlon 64 motherboards section and download this on CG-ICS950403 for the K8X800 chipset. I would recommend not going much beyond 2.0Ghz as it will put a serious strain on the PCI/AGP bus.

Next is the dreaded 800Mhz on battery problem (NOTE THIS WILL NOT WORK ON THE M6809). It is not Emachines fault rather it is a combination of AMD's driver and WinXP. It does not have this affect if you are running Win2K or Linux.
There is a solution that is pretty simple. Download the latest AMD PowerNow driver from http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/AMDPowernowver3.04.EXE and then right click and select compatibility mode. Select Windows 2000 and then install. You can now check the power properties and there is a new option "AMD PowerNow ™ Technology" one of the options is High performance mode and always on. (Don't forget to set the power scheme to always on)

My screen won't come on even though I am moving the touch pad! This is normal just select the Fn+F4 and the screen will come back on.

Please let me know if I missed anything or made any mistakes.

    Pretty good source of info.

    * To elaborate on 2. under the Drivers header.
Microsoft TweakUI will allow you to map buttons to other applications to a certain degree. I currently have my calc to run when I hit the 'i' button however, if you try to put any links that require quotes, meaning links with spaces, and that require arguments, it won't work. In certain instances I can have it work with links that require quotes but you'll be more successful if you let TweakUI put in the quotes for you.

    * Correction on your information under the CPU header.
There are two different mobile processors that AMD released. The original AMD Athlon 64 DTR and the later released Mobile AMD Athlon 64. Although the differences are minimal the Mobile version runs 20W less (62W) than the DTR versions (~82W) and the maximum speed released for the mobile version is 3200+ (2.0GHz) while the maximum speed for the DTR is 3400+ (2.2GHz). Your laptop, along with the other M6805, M6807 and M6809 all have the Mobile AMD Athlon 64 processors.

But other than that, a good compilation of what has been released on the other forums.

I recently sent a question to tech support about the 6809 supporting PC3200/DDR400, and this is what they replied:

The MAXIMUM amount of memory for both systems is 1.2 GB because of the way the memory slots are configured on this system. The system initially ships with two 256MB memory modules, but the location of one of the modules is inaccessible to the user. This means the user can upgrade the memory in only one of the memory slots. Each memory slot has a maximum memory module size of 1 GB, so 1 GB + 256 MB = ~1.2 GB total.

    These are the specifications:
    Number of RAM Slots: 2
    Total RAM Capacity: 1280 MB
RAM Stick Size Limit: 1024 MB

RAM Type: PC2700 SO-DIMM DDR RAM
    Bus Speed: 166 MHz
    Number of Pins:

Please note: on ALL DDR memory the memory is running at a base rate, in this case 166MHz. Being Double Data Rate memory however gives it a "virtual speed" of 333MHz (166MHz X 2 = 333DDR). As long as the memory complies with the PC2700 SO-DIMM specifications, it should work.

Now this reply from them has really got me wondering now.....Will this notebook support 2 x 1 GB chips? The guy said, "Each memory slot has a maximum memory module size of 1 GB", might void the warranty, but I think it would work. Anyone tried it?

Yes you can put a 1 Gig dimm in the internal slot, I am currently running a 1 gig dim in the internal, and 512 in the external. Which has given me a total of 1.5 Gig Sodimm. I will soon be expanding to 2 gig. Does anyone know where we can find bios upgrades, and driver upgrades for our wireless? Great break down on the machine though, it took me 45 minutes to get access to my internal ram, thanks for the pointers

Tried the above steps twice, each time the powernow installs, but only way to find it is under my computer/c drive/programs/AMD/Powernow folder {nothing runs from in here though}, under START/ALL PROGRAMS amd power now does not even show up. When I go into control panel/power options, only the normal options are showing as available. Am I missing a step {or 2}, because I'm using a brand new emachines m6809, nothing on machine is changed (except downloading/trying powernow}. My email is [email protected] if you want to reply directly w/how to get this to work since I'm a heavy gamer, bought this for gaming on the move, and don't want to be stuck at 800mhz while not plugged in. Thank you.

Did you do it like this http://www.orion7144.com/images/Powernow.jpg
Also under "power schemes" have you changed it to always on or is it still set for portable?

That is one thing I misses when I wrote the FAQ. If you change that and it works let me know and I will update the FAQ.

I just bought a M6809 yesterday and I did everything in your guide but I still can't figure out how to overclock.

So I should use ATITool to find my max core and memory, do I OC using this program?

I checked out clockgen but when I tried OC, it caused my notebook to crash so I wont be using it anymore till I get help.

I guess my question is, could you elaborate on the process of OCing?

    Thanks

AtiTool is just a program to help you find the max overclock for your video cards Core/Memory. Run it for an hour or so and get the numbers it is at. I like to go down a few % from those numbers. Next you must have the Omega drivers installed (Not must but much easier). On your display properties you will now have a tab for "Radlink" this is where you set your new settings.

As far as clockgen, you just have to be carefull and only change the FSB setting. 2Gig is going to pretty much be max for everyone (some will get lucky) since we do not have a PCI/AGP lock. In other words just increase the FSB till you reach close to 2gig and set it.

acording to the manufacter of this laptop (Not emachines it's arima)
The laptop will support 2 Gigs of ram max.

All so the true model number from arima is W730-K8.

There are no drivers for the wireless under the 64bit Windows XP but I believe that Linux has some generic drivers.

It seems that the Powernow driver is not working correctly with the 6809 series.

You can not upgrade the Video card.

I disagree with your point number 4. I have tried everything to get the drivers to update from the catalyists. The standard setup crashes and tells me it cannot find any compatable hardware. I tried updating the driver manually through the device manager, but to no avail. I point it to the inf directory, and it tells me it cannot find a suitable driver.

Should I use the Have Disk option and force it to install one of the 9600 drivers in the catalyst?

Just use the Omega drivers, it is much easier. The Omegas use the same version driver as the ATI drivers.

[8D]I've run performance tests by passmark.com on my M6809. It all rocks except for the memory. The pc2700 ram behaves like a snail, only 1/3 the speed of my friends P4 HT3.2Ghz. Anybody tried this or knows how to improve it. I got a figure of 660, whereas the P4 got 1600. Everything else was as expected - great.

By the way, thanks for all the info here.

Would faster memory(Pc3200) allow the board or chip to open up at all? I am going to upgrade my memory since UT2K4,Battlefield needs 1gb, and wondering if I should just get PC3200. Also would it be best to buy 1 stick of 1gb so I don't have to worry about paying a authorized repair center or voiding warranty?

According to the folks at eMachines, you can only upgrade with a PC 2700. And I plan on replacing only one of the ram slots with a 1gb. They go for a little over $100 on ebay and costs over $200 from crucial.com

I hate to burst your bubble but the 1GB compatible RAM from crucial.com is $449.99. Remember you need the 200 pin notebook size and not the 184 pin desktop size.

you are thinking of PC Ram, I just put my 1 gig in and I paid, which I thought was a good deal 329. It does make a big difference in the machine to go from 512 to 1.5 gig.
Has anyone upgraded the cd-rw drive in the 6805 to the Dvd drive from the 6809? I contacted E-machine and they gave me some bunk link that sold laptop ram and backup batteries only.

Some people have reported success with upgrading their memory with PC3200 however, you can only run one stick. Using both slots with PC3200 will not work.

Excellent overview, but there is one minor detail worth mentioning.

M6809's are now sent with Restore DVDs, not CD's. All drivers are now on one single DVD. I found this particularly frustrating when the instructions and everyone else says there should be 3 cds, and I only had one disk.

How could I copy all information from the included 80gb hard drive to a new 7200 rpm hard drive? What is the easiest way?

    Thanks

Okay, here's the next question. I have read about problems with upgrading to XP Pro. Since the upcoming Windows 64-bit is based on Pro, and I intend to upgrade to it, let me put this question forth.

If I get an external enclosure for my existing OEM hard drive, and put a new 7200rpm hard drive in, and install XP 64 onto the new hard drive, could I grab the drivers from the old hard drive in the USB enclosure? I have read that this is the main concern for those upgrading to XP Pro.

    Thanks again.

    for video driver update:

you need a little mod tool to add mobility radeon 9600 info into the driver's .inf file.

    get it here:

    http://file2.mydrivers.com/display/ati-Dhmodtool2.0.exe

omega driver is supposed to be modified already, but I can't get it work without manual modification.

Omega driver(and official driver)is archived, although they are .exe files, actually you can use winrar to easily unpack them, so that you can modify the .inf file and install

    I like my 6807!

I'm having some issues with my 6805. I'm upgrading from an older laptop which ran XP Pro. Since this came loaded with XP Home, I'm going to retire my other laptop and install my copy of XP Pro on the 6805. Using the DVD that came with the computer, I've been able to load all of the necessary drivers. I'm using omega's for the ATI and it works great.

However, I can't get my wireless to work at all. I install it and during the install I get an error in instruction 0x771c76cb at memory location 0x00163380. After installing, it won't even bring up the broadcom utility or show that I have wireless access at all. I see the broadcom utility running in the back ground, but can't access any of the functionality.

I've tried rebuilding and doing a clean install from a newly formatted partition, but I'm getting the same problem.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    R

    Hay all,

I have some info for all M6809 (and probably the other M6000) owners. There are certain 1 GB memory chips that have serious compatibility problems and will cause our machines to crash.
kti model MSAD42D-D8IB3 (this is what all the el-cheepo internet memory sellers will try to pawn off on you unless you ask for the brand name).
I found that GRA-G4333/1GB powerbook G4 chips work great.
It works so well that I have decided to upgrade the internal memory to 1GB too so I will have a total of 2GB. But, I need some help. What is the trick for opening the laptop? I cannot figure out how to remove the keyboard. I have removed all of the obvious screws and even the hidden one in the hard-drive bay but the case still seems to stick at the rear of the laptop.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you should figure out a way to take off the monitor, there are 2 more screws under it.

I don't want to try that, upgrade memory on the back first

btw, how much the price is the apple memory you mentioned?

    I like my 6807!

The apple chips cost me $319 a piece at MemoryStock.com but you have to ask for the brand name.
I have also heard that the Samsung M470L2923BN0-CB3 1 GB chips work in our machines but I have not verified this.

Are there more screws under those little rubber feet? I don't really want to rip them off for nothing to check.

I too bought a 1GB stick and it was KTI brand, and it kept giving me the BSOD upon boot, took it out and it booted fine. Called the company and told them I wanted an exchange andthey are sending me a brand name RAM.[V]

The M6809 uses Samsung memory for its OEM specs. Any Samsung chip should work.

As for generics, remember the old adage: "You get what you pay for."

I finally figured out how to dissasemble my M6809. Basically, there are two screws on the back of the machine (near the rear) that you first need to remove. Then, the part of the bezel with the power button and the emachines logo is free to be popped off. All the rest of the obvious screws then need to be removed and the laptop basically falls apart.
I did this to gain access to the internal RAM slot. So, now I am the proud owner of a M6809 with 2 GB of memory. And if that weren't enough, I upgraded the 4200rpm hard drive to a 7200rpm drive (Hitachi Travelstar model: HTS726060M9ATX0). Now this machine can really be called a desktop replacement.

HELP! I am not that technically savy to begin with. I bought the M6805 (and it rocks!) and "upgraded" to Win XP PRO. Now my ATI card is not recognized. the display is being run off of the default display driver. ATI utils don't show up at all on my system now. I downloaded the latest driver from
    http://drivers.soft32.com/download/driver-ATI_MOBILITY_RADEON_9600-24069-5.html
run the download and it errored out on install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

Hey guys I have a problem with upgrading to the new catalyst 4.7 drivers and was wondering if anyone has a fix. Everything works great, but i lose out on the 1280x800 desktop resolution. Is this due to the moniter needing to be reinstalled or do i just loose out and have to run at 1024x768???

Also thanks for the tips on the ram. Im going to order 2 sticks of 1 gig samsung ram now. Also maybe the harddrive. [ :p]

    Hi guys,
I will be buying the M6811 when it hits the market, hopefully it does so soon, and I am trying to choose the best memory upgrade for that system. I am looking at 1GB and 512MB Ram SODIMMs and it has come to my attention that the 1GB PC2700 from MUSHKIN goes for $280 on their website while the same from CRUCIAL is $450 (this is not low-latency ram, just a normal 2.5 one). CORSAIR doesn't have right now 1GB sticks so Mushkin and Crucial are the trusted brands that I have in mind right now.
From what I know Mushkin desktop memory is considered the best or among the best performers out there. I personally have in my desktop 1GB Ram from their High_performance Level2 black series an it's been top notch. I have never used their 200-pin SODIMMs for laptops simply because I have never had a laptop but I would expect MUSHKIN to liv up to their name and make equally good laptop memory sticks.
Could you please tell me why is this difference of ~$170 between the Crucial and the Mushkin ram sticks? Is there a problem with the Mushkin 200-pin ram modules or what because they both seem to have the same specs?
    Thank you very much.

I have seen alot of people complain about the powernow drivers and the 793MHZ problem on battery and power line attached. To be honest if you are not doing that heavy of work why would you want your processor to work at higher clock speeds? This saves battery. I have never heard anyone complaining using a centrino...

Yes, but Pentium M (Centrino) notebooks, although clocked lower and eat up less power, perform as well as P4 notebooks with much better battery life. The clock speed is constant when plugged or on battery.

Just did the video and CPU overclocking on my M6805 (installed the new omega drivers, the Powernow software, clockgen, etc.) HOLY @#$@#!!! cannot get over the speed improvement. took the video to 400/202, and the CPU from 802 to 880. unbelieveable, and no instability issues. will keep on running it to see if any issues come up.

    THANK YOU ORION!!! YOU ROCK!
