unfortunately have one of the units that shipped with a DVD-Rom/CDRW. is there any way to upgrade this to a dvd writer, or do I have to go with an external unit?

    Thanks!

http://parts.emachines.com/emachines/sys_lookup.asp should give you at least the brand and part number of a suitable drive. Newegg or Tigerdirect or similar probably sells one. You will void your warranty installing it and it will cost more than an external drive and it will be slower. I recommend buying a Fire Wire / USB external housing and DVD RW drive (total cost ~ $120) instead.

    First PC = Vic-20, 8" 128KB Home-Brew Floppy Drive ... Current Rig = eMachines m6805 ... Quantum Leap?

Thanks very much for the ideas. I'll do some research. I found this afternoon a Kano 4x dvd ultra slim external (usb2) burner that may be another alternative if I don't want to dive into the unit after looking into it.

Actually, replacing the internal drive with a different one shouldn't be too hard to match. There are a couple places I know of that sell these type of drives.

    Newegg.com:

    UltraDrives:

One of these should fit your system. Just find the brand/model of your current drive and then get the measurements from the web. Match up and get the appropriate drive. Remove the old drive, pull all mounting hardware and attach to the new one and pop in. Viola!

Yes, this will probably void your warranty, but if anything does fail in the unit, just put the old drive back before shipping out for repair and they shouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Okay, I've got a LiteOn Slimtype Combo LSC-24082k drive in the unit now. Is it safe to assume the LiteOn listed on Ultradrives (link 2 msgs above) would be the same size... ? Was not easy to find specific measurements, but will keep on searching.

While it is physically possible, just be aware that you will lose the warranty by doing so (not that eMachines has the best service anyway).

You might be just as well off going with an external unit. You can usually get faster speeds, and you don't have to tinker with any of the machines guts.

I also believe that some of the M6805/6809s shipped with LG drives. You might want to look in that direction as well.
