I've found that when I am using my 6811 to burn DVD's, if I use a 4X DVD R, it burns at 4X but if I use an 8X DVD R, it burns at only 2.4X. What is the reason for this and is there a firmware upgrade available to remedy this? Thanks all.

Do you use dvd+r or dvd-r, what app are you using to burn, what's the manufacturer of the disc? There are many factors that can affect the burn speed. I think the 2.4x is a continuosly maintained writing speed, whereas the 4x is the peak of a variable writing process. The overall time to burn may even be shorter using the 2.4x approach. DVD media experts please correct me if I'm wrong.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Try some different media. What drive is it? Find the supported media list.

BenQ DVD+R, using DVD Shrink (which uses NERO 6 Ultra). I'm not certain who manufactures the DVD Burner itself - it's the one that came with the 6811. How would I find this out? Thanks.

You can look in device manager or you can use this:

One thing to note laptop drives are not as fast as desktop drives. Usually an 8x burn clocks in at about 13 minutes and 4x around 18 versus versus 8 and 14 minutes for a desktop drive.

I would not use Dell firmware on your drive. Dell often alters the firmware for their drives.

Here's and article that Win XP Service Pack is found to make some DVD RW up to 40% slower.

It's Win XP Service Pack 2 ...........sorry
The PC World Test Center staff has discovered two bugs involving Windows XP's Service Pack 2. One can reduce the write speed of many dual-layer DVD drives. The other can decrease the battery life on some Acer laptops by an hour.
Staffers were testing dual-layer DVD drives when they found that InCD4 DVD-burning software, by Nero AG (formerly Ahead Software AG), performed up to 40 percent slower than competing applications (such as Roxio's Drag-to-Disc) on systems running SP2. InCD4 ships with many drives, including those from Lite-On, Plextor, and Sony.
Nero developers say that the glitch is due to a cache problem in SP2 and affects InCD prior to release 4.3.7.3. To check your version, open the program and select About. If your app is affected, get the InCD Update-Package 3. The fix bypasses SP2's cache management problem.
Microsoft is working on a hotfix that wasn't yet available at press time.
