I would like to add 1Gb of RAM to this new notebook, but there are no specs in the documentation, emachine website, or memory vendors. The clsest I can find in specs is:
    1024 MB DDR2 800 MHz, (PC2-6400) memory
    (1 × 1024 MB) Expandable to 2 GB
2 DDR slots (total) | 1 DDR slot (available)

What should I be looking for?

i went to crucial and looked up the emachines m5777 and it seems to indicate that it takes ddr2 laptop memory. i have a couple of ddr2 modules and i dont know how to open the laptop up to get to the memory. crucial, also seems to suggest no more than 2GB of ddr2 for this laptop, no higher than 2gig memory upgrade options, so i'm unsure if it'll take more than 2gb of ddr2. i believe by default, it comes with 1gb of memory though. not any less. its the same as the eMD620-5777 right ? that already has 1gb. the trick with opening it up, you can open up all the screws for the bottom panel, but it still wont come off. i'm hoping someone can expand on how to get it open and upgrade the memory, because it doesn't seem to be easy.

This laptop can use 4GB of DDR2 5300. I just upgraded mine over the weekend and its going fine, doesn't get too hot and seems to be something emachines was trying to hide. This laptop uses the AMD RS690MC chipset which can handles 4GB.

I am also having problems getting the case off to upgrade the memory. Even after removing all of the screws, the back does not come off. Any help out there? Thanks a bunch!

    Hello,

The memory type is DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz notebook memory. I just added a 2Gb stick of Kingston Value Ram KVR667D2S0/2GR and it works great!

To add memory to your laptop, you will only need to remove the five small phillips screws on the "L" shaped panel with the vent holes. There is a small indent near the back of the laptop where you can get a finger under the "L" panel and pry up. It may seem like it is still attached somehow, but this is just some small tabs attached to the panel and they will pop out with additional force. Once the panel is removed, the memory is easily located and accessed, and adding a stick is a breeze, just slide in the available slot! Make sure that it is fully seated all the way into the connector.

Hope this helps all who wish to upgrade this notebook!

I just bought 4gb (2 x 2gb) PC2-5300 PNY ram from best buy. It only see's 2gb. When I tell the geek squad they say that this labtop D620 can only max up to 2gb, 1gb in each slot.

Momosgarage please tell me how u get 4gb to work.....thanks

Alright here's the deal, I had to use 800MHZ RAM, I bought 4gb(2x2gb) of Kingston 800mhz RAM and it worked. I saw that the 4gb when I went to the system screen.

Next question is does it really use all 4gb, I heard that it can only use 3gb on the 32 bit system? Is that true.

So should I just upgrade to 1gb giving me total 2gb and listen to emachine or just keep the 4gb in there. I want to maximize the most RAM possible but I don't want to waste money if it doesnt' use the extra RAM it there is no use.

    anybody

Keep the 4GB, Vista can only utilize 4GB as RAM but it will allocate to your graphics card first so you will use almost all of it. And you will still get the advantages of dual channel memory.

Sorry for draging this question, so it will utilize all 4gb is that correct? Even when I check the stats on the performance screen where I rate my computer it shows my score for 4.8 with 4gb, 3gb and 2gb.

Just trying to figure out should I just stick with a total of 2gb or go higher. I don't want to spend the extra money in RAM if there is no point.....

    Thanks

Don't take anything WEI gives you as serious information. WEI is a joke and is not anything near a benchmark nor does it hold any type of bearing as to actual performance.

Can anyone post pictures of the bottom of the case coming off, showing where the ram is placed?

My son has a Emachine D620 laptop, with 2gb ram, and it seems to be a great laptop for the price. Very impressed. We would like to increase the ram - since that is such a cheap upgrade. So to verify - ONLY 800mhz SO-DIMMs work - Right?

    Thanks in advance.

Toaster, how much are you going to upgrade to? When you upgrade let me know you see a difference between 2gb from 3gb or 4gb. Thanks

Besides doing a BIOS update, I would say some brands don't always jive with certain motherboards. I am using Corsair Value Ram, but they aren't always from the same batch (i.e. my value ram could be better or worse than what you would get now, it a supply and demand thing). I also have an Acer 4420-5239 whcih I installed Kingston PC2-5300 Ram and it aslo sees 4GB. The chipsets between the two board are somewhat similar, so its most likley related to the bios. I also upgraded my OS from Vista Basic to Vista Premium.

I got the 4gb to work, I had bought PNY ram which didnt' work. So I switched to Kingston Ram and it was able to pick up 4gb.

Now I'm trying to decide if the labtop uses all 4gb, I think the max the labtop will read is 2gb.

    What do u guys think?

Has anyone tried this? i was about to buy 2gb 800 mhz ram off new egg for my d620 5777 when i stumbled up on this site. this new ram will raise the total ram to 3gb and i want to make sure that it will work fine, BEcause if it will thats awesome, but if it won't then thats wasted money.

    Cheers!

As promised, I am posting our results... remember, the emachines d620 is my sons laptop, and not mine personally.

We upgraded his Emachines D620 from 2gb to a total of 4gb by removing the 2 1gb pc5300 dimms, and replaced them with 2x 2gb dimms for a total of 4GB pc5300 memory. EASY AS PIE. Both dimms are located under the laptop, in the same place - much easier than my Dell D630! where one dimm is under the keyboard.

ANYWAY: After the 4gb upograde, the laptop running Vista does seem a bit zippier, but absolutely not a night and day difference... Was it worth the upgrade? I think so. Today the upgrade costs UNDER $40 (about $38 USD with tax and all)... It was so cheap, I upgraded my Dell D630 too! :)

I think if YOU can get the memory as inexpensively as we did (local Fry's electronics), GO FOR IT.

I have just upgraded my emachine D620 with 4 Gigs of Corsair Value select memory 667mhz. Bios recognizes it and so does Vista. I have AMD Athlon 2650e processor 1.60 Ghz. Plug and play everything works fine. Bought memory from Fry's after rebate $25.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------I posted this in the "other" upgrade thread...it might better fit here...the RAM part, anyway.

I bought 2x2gig (4 gig) Patriot PC2-6400 CL5 RAM from Fry's Electronics today. The notebook is an eMachines D620-5777 purchased at Best Buy in late December. The RAM I removed is 6400 (800 Mhz) including both the original 1 gig and the second 1 gig I bought last month.

When I attempted to start after installing, the machine would not start, giving an error page that referred to a hardware change. After a second try, and "auto shutdown to avoid hardware damage," I reinstalled the DDR2 2x1gig (2 gig) and after some "software self repair" (it restored some earlier settings, or so it said) the laptop has started and operates normally.

The operating system is Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1. Vista appears to be (it's so referenced on the "system" page) 32 bit. Is there a hardware limit there, or is it just software? Is this a 32 bit machine so it is limited to 3 gig RAM? Will that keep it from taking the Athlon 64 5050e (even though its "stock" processor, the Athlon 2650e is part of the same family)?

I've read this forum, and expected the RAM upgrade to work properly. I also have gotten an Athelon 5050e, which I have not yet installed.

Why did the RAM not work? What can I do to get it to work? What do I need to do to have the processor upgrade work?

these laptops are highly upgradable providing you dont go over a 45w cpu

mine is running at 2.1ghz x2 with 4 gb ddr 800mhz ram (crucial ram used here )

i think the the max processor is 4050e which is what i have they are discontinued but still available to buy second hand from fleabay where i got mine from

    processor = amd athlon x2 4050e 2.1ghz

    memory = 3070mb 800mhz ddr2 ram but ive installed 4gb

page file 1039mb used available 5301mb

    all this info from dxdiag

batterylife is down to about 1hr 15mins though as its using 30w more than original cpu

    and its blindingly fast

    hope this helps

I want to upgrade the RAM on my D620-5777 from 1GB to maybe 3. Since it came stock with only 1GB, I'm pretty sure there's only one slot to put in RAM, so the 3GB is out of the question. Is there a certain type of RAM I need to get for this laptop? And since there's only one slot, how expensive should one stick of 4GB of RAM be compared to 2?

If you are using a 32 bit system XP, your system can only use a maximum of 2GB. Move over to Vista or Windows 7.. Also, if you already have the latest windows version, then update your bios which will fix the issue.
