OK it is now a toss up between the M6800 series and the Acer with the Radeon 9700 which are both in the ball park of US$1300.
Any suggestions where to secure a good deal on the emachines offering?
Thanks in advance

The best offers seem to be from BB after rebates.

I just got a M6811 for $1449 after rebates. The M6810 should be about $200 less. I got it at Best Buy but I don't know how much longer their rebate offer will be in effect.

<---- Spot the icon change from Compaq to eMachines [ ]
Went to Best Buy last night armed with $45 worth of Rewards Points from my Compaq 2199 purchase.
Walked out the door at $1556.84 including tax.
Still have the $250 in rebates to deduct which takes me down to $1306.84
AND
I have earned another $60 worth of Rewards Points which in theory takes me down to $1246.84 including tax which is not too shabby
Right now I am in the middle of a full fomat and reinstall of XP Pro - will report back later on what I think of the machine [ ]

Well I now have the machine up and running on XP Pro with SP1 and all updates that are possible to download.
I'm very impressed with the low noise aspect of this machine compared to my Compaq 2199US.
No complaints so far but have the following observations:
Negatives [ !]
Speaker volume is pretty low
Card reader insert is bound to get lost at some point! (cheap design).
Some of the keys feel "looser" than others.
Postives [^]
Generally good solid build quality.
Nice screen resolution
Quiet even when gaming
Push fit AC adapter connector (the Compaq could come out).
I'll report back later [ ]
