you can't simply use the old one as an "external drive". The only way you would have to access the contents on it or use it in some manner is placing it back inside the m6809. I'm fairly certain EMachines does not support putting a hard drive in an ultrabay drive as you can with ThinkPad notebooks (so you esentially have two hard drives and can choose which one to boot to). so i'm afraid your old hard drive would essentially become rather useless.

    thanks abax

is there a way that i can attach the old one through sub port? basically i will diattach the old one and will attach it when needed to store some files there, i am not intending to attach it always and wherever i go, only when i am home and want to share the files that on the old drive by attaching it through the usb, thus the new one will be the permenant drive and the old will be attached when needed

Yes, you just need to buy a 2.5" USB enclosure for it. I use a 60GB notebook drive for backup purposes. Enclosures usually run about $20 for a decent one.

    Hey guys,

I need some expert advice. I am thinking of buying a big external hard drive and I have heard that some laptops have BIOS that allows booting from Firewire or USB hard drives. Does the latest M68XX BIOS allows me to boot from an external hard drive thru FiWi or USB? Any ideas or suggestions on how to boot from an external one would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Is there a reason you want to goto a 40 gig Hardrive?

You can get a 60 gig in 7200 RPM for just a few dollars more if not for the same price of the 40 gig so why drop off 20 gigs?
