This is actually a desktop question but it's quite relevant here.
There's a generic HP desktop where a desktop 7970 needs to get into. The system comes with proprietary PSU connectors and form factor, so hope for a more powerful replacement isn't high. The only alternative I can think of now is to power the 7970 with an secondary (standard ATX) PSU, just like an eGPU, and turn it on by paper clipping.
It's my understanding that such a setup will work in a way similar to an eGPU/notebook combo, but without PCIe bandwidth drop. However I haven't see any implementations. Is there any potential pitfalls I may have to watch out for? It might be worth mentioning that I have no hands-on experience with notebook eGPUs.
If I do get such a system working, what's the correct power up/down procedure? My uneducated guess is as follows:
