As my friends and followers know, I just moved back to desktop performance after about a 12-year Sabbatical venture into high performance notebooks. It did not take long to notice the absence of a place where desktop owners can discuss their overclocking escapades and post benchmark scores. So, here we go...

Laptop owners should feel free to participate in discussions, ask questions about overclocking and post benchmark scores to compare with what they see from desktop owners. This is a brand-agnostic thread for those that want to rub elbows with those outside of their brand-specific threads and fanboy cliques.

As usual, I expect Brother @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER will be the king in this overclocker's thread as well. He is a great sensei and mentor to me. As I stayed within a budget, I suspect there will be others that have beasts that will stomp my humble (but potent) new beast.

Also feel free to post photos or videos showcasing your monster PC in this thread. I will include my new system review as an example.

    Let the fun begin!

Anyone that is serious about benching that would like to become a contributing member of the @Prema HWBOT benching team, let me know (or @Johnksss) and we will provide you with a special password to join Team PremaMod. I have PM turned off here, but you can message me or add a message to my profile wall at HWBOT or John at HWBOT and mention your forum name here.

Great system, congrats on the purchase. Must be a nice change having proper overclocking tools in the BIOS and not worrying too much about temps, although maybe you will miss the challenge ;)

@Mr. Fox, nearly forgot my AIDA memory scores:
    AIDA64 395g125v3600m14cl.jpg cachemem 39g1225v3600m14cl.png
I'll take a newer one soon. Today I went through and setup 4.05GHz (most of the above benches) and redid the ram kind of quick. I'm considering trying 3466, but shooting for CL12 on it. I think that would improve latency even more. But that is future plans, as well as needing to reseat the waterblock (wish I knew that before I assembled, talk about a pain in the hindside).

Here's the thing, don't get it unless you have a use for it. If you are doing it for just benching, cool. If you plan on taking up a hobby, like video cpu encoding or transcoding, doing multiple streams while gaming, building a home server, etc., then do it. I will mention, Intel wins on performance (except on very specific tasks), but has the Intel price premium. If you can wait until Zen 2 vs. Ice Lake, you will get much more bang for the buck (Q4 2018-1H 2019, AMD 7nm versus Intel 10nm+ processes, DDR5 potentially as that is supposed to be published summer of 2018, PCIe 4.0 (PCIe 5.0 is supposed to be published in Q1 or Q2 2019), etc.).

Also, remember that HWBot separates CPUs like mine from the mainstream chips. So it is a different, much smaller, class, which means more competition, but good ranks and numbers. If you mainly game or do regular compute, save the money and wait for the new Titan card or for Volta or Navi. Just saying, for the chip alone (AMD), you could get a nice 1080 Ti and the change nearly buys the Intel CPU, with ram and MB being equivalent. For Intel's 16-core, you can get two 1080 Tis, but have to deal with lack of SLI support (and DX12 makes it up to the game manufacturers, not hardware drivers, so unless the coders pick it up)....

Welcome to the desktop side brother!

At least here we shouldn't need to worry about bga!

Same 1080 Ti as me too, good choice

I've been meaning to. Had a work project that just finished and now just got back to my build. Temps should be lower, and considering my 980 Ti doesn't ever go over 34C, I'm guessing the block is seated wrong on the CPU. The posts were so tight I thought I might break the board with the flex to get it pushed down. Going to use a hammer and lightly adjust the posts for a smooth slide into position when I take it apart. Was going to wait until that fix to post numbers over there. But, now, watching the DVR'd walking dead episode from tonight...

Congratulations @Mr. Fox , nice setup, we will see big numbers in benching will ignite competition in the desktop segment, you are still the king in the laptop segment and I'm sure that you will be the king in the desktop as well. I will expect you to do some liquid nitrogen cooling experiments someday to "plead the 5th" of this machine :)
I hope that we can find an effective way supporting you getting the best hardware to satisfy your ambitious, so we can see all unbeatable numbers with your name for all time.
I'm really glad having your DM3 ALIENKILLER II laptop, Thank you for everything. Enjoy your new RIG :)

    1665CB 5.1Ghz at 1.328v.

5.2Ghz on all cores crashes CB about 3/4 through even at 1.400v in BIOS. I could up the LLC to max level but damn thats a lot of juice going through my chip. I figure a delid could help as temps were in the 80s on that run and maybe I can shave off 15-20C and get it stable.

    I'm still on X99 with a badly binned 5820K, 2400MHz CL12.

Wonder if I should upgrade? Ryzen and new X299 don't seem to offer much performance upgrade in terms of games. And X299 don't have full raid capability like X99 + more expensive to get cpu lanes...

Just sold my 5820K (was running 4.4Ghz 1.25v stable for a couple years) this morning for $200. Going to miss the old girl, we've had our ups and downs. I just got distracted by the new hott brunette in town. :D I'm hanging onto my AsRock X99X Fatality though for the future cheapo 8 or 10 core build when those chips are dirt cheap. Motherboards always seem to be the expensive component to grab years down the line and its a great motherboard.

    Also this.

Updated CB score incoming when this damn internet starts working. Seems to be a nationwide slowdown.

How high can you go on your 5820k?

If I remember correctly I was able to bench 4.7Ghz and validate 4.8Ghz.

    4.5Ghz for 24/7

    I can only find 4.5GHz 3DFS

    https://www.3dmark.com/fs/6573961

    https://www.3dmark.com/fs/6220490

I have 4.6Ghz as well, I think I didn't do FS with 4.7Ghz, only cinebench, might have results in the Area-51 AW desktop forum

I have my 5820K running at 4.3GHz all the time on all cores but I in hwinfo I see the speed bouncing around fairly frequently when I am sitting on my desktop. With a 980 and a 5820k I have a score of about 12.4k in Firestrike. Don't know if that is normal or "good" or not but I know my laptop gets 18k but it looks like it's the GPU making all the difference as my CPU score on my desktop is about 2k points higher, but my 1080 laptop gpu score is significantly higher than my 980 on my desktop. Have not been super concerned with tweaking my desktop because I had a good feeling I would be replacing it soon-ish when I started testing and OCing my laptop and tweaking my desktop a little.

Plans for my desktop are to sell it to a friend of mine looking for a desktop for about $600, I feel like that's a pretty good deal for him. Not that I get much use out of it or even have all the slots filled, but I will miss having 8 memory slots and quad channel memory but I think I will see a performance increase out of the new build. All in all though, upgrading my GPU to a 1080TI and not replacing the CPU would have probably been just as noticeable of an upgrade vs the entire machine.

Skip it and wait for Zen 2 or ice lake. You've got the performance to wait and are underwhelmed with this gen. If anything, find a cheap upgrade on the cpu while waiting. It is 12-19 months, but AMD and Intel die shrinks will put the logic density the same. AMD will have speed increases and ipc improvements. Intel will have improved efficiency due to 10nm+ (think Kaby process refinement). You'll also have pcie 4 and ddr5 (potentially), making the platform longer lived and potentially a better upgrade path. Ice lake likely won't work on x299. So...

Probably what I should have done too but I needed a new case for my PC which would have required disassembling everything and rebuilding it and I felt like if I were going to do that I might as well upgrade and replace everything. Probably should have just gone with a GPU upgrade and saved a ton of money I didn't need to spend but I have the motherboard and CPU most people can't get their hands on so I have to commit now.

I can't afford to break my new x99 mthrbrd cpu or memory, but just to break it in I did a fast run of PassMark the other day

Turned the heat up some to grab what I could for the Cine-test, it worked out to like 4.6 on three cores / 4.7 on the other three, 3466 memory, VCore set to 1.355volts with a stock Asus GTX 560 (my 290x won't output to my monitor for some reason). 1450's easily in reach, should hit a wall at or before 1500 @4.7JigaHurtz, typical for this chip > test runs let me know about where we're at in the pecking order

SiliconLottery.com Historical Binning Statstics suggest I got a golden chip, ability to hit 4.6GHz is in top 6%

I wonder how many kids will buy this based on the first video? LOL. Same GPU under the hood. Why? LOLOL. At least they are not charging extra for nothing but a different shroud. Considering it needs water cooling to run at full boost clocks, this makes no sense. Since 1080 Ti was released, I don't know why anyone would buy one anyhow. $400 more to get less performance... yeah, that's the ticket.

Most of those settings I am already using, but there are a few tips in that video that I have not tried that might be very useful. Thanks for sharing it. I am very glad I chose this motherboard. After watching the video, even more glad. Detailed written documentation explaining the purpose and use of BIOS settings is, and has always been, extremely poor or non-existent. When the industry uses multiple names for exactly the same function or feature it makes it even more difficult, LOL.

Is the look, feel and layout of the menus on this one the same as your motherboard?

The look and feel is near identical to my motherboard UEFI setup with the exception of the Maximus seemingly having a couple additional features that I am missing but the core of the setup seems exactly the same from what I can see. I also found for me at least that LLC6 works the best as it keeps voltage droop at a minimum (after my BIOS update of course which fixed all issues) while LLC7 (max) causes overshoot on voltage. While it appears in this video for him LLC6 causes a tad bit of overshoot. I would attribute that to the differences in the Maximus having a much better VRM design. There are a ton of extreme controls in the BIOS as well for me, but I have found them completely unnecessary for me and make zero difference.

I am using LLC6 now also, based on his recommendation. I had it set to LLC7 before. For me to bench this CPU stable at 5.2GHz is taking like 1.440V. But, the benchmarks above maxed out around 78°C on wPrime 1024M and 72°C in Cinebench. I have the profile saved to use for benching, but I think I am going to run 5.0GHz for 24/7 because the voltage is so much lower.

I have to use the "Maximus Memory Tweak Mode 2" or whatever it is called in the BIOS to get my 3200 RAM stable at 3400 and above. It will not train correctly without using that setting, but it is 3200 RAM.

I am also using the TPU-II setting and maxed out the settings that he showed as maxed out in the video.

ThrottleStop is working great with 8700K. I have 4.8, 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2GHz profiles, but with SVID disabled the voltage stays the same on all profiles. I also noticed that I get no Core Voltage or CPU Package Power (watts) readings in HWiNFO64 with SVID disabled. Makes sense since SVID disabled blocks communication with the voltage regulation, but I really like seeing those values, so I will use my 5.0GHz profile with SVID enabled so I can get those values to show. SVID does not need to be disabled for stability at only 5.0GHz.

I also tested ThrottleStop earlier for a test of clockspeed/fps comparison in a game and the hotkeys worked great. Makes for quick switching between clockspeeds without the need for reboot/split screens of clockspeed comparison.

5.0Ghz is my daily 24/7 driver as well at a super low voltage and its been rock solid stable. Above 5.0Ghz on all cores the voltage needed seems to go up pretty fast and just isn't worth the performance difference save a few benchmark runs here and there.

Great score on CB! I now have a new number to chase haha. Time to get back to tweaking.

I'm ashamed to admit that if the Titan xp was worth buying in general, I probably would have bought that special edition over a normal version for my new build, but seeing as one is not worth 4-500+ more over a 1080ti I couldn't justify getting one of those instead.

No need to be ashamed. Different strokes for different folks, right? The nice thing is NVIDIA is not charging extra for the exact same GPU with a different shroud.

Nice! I'm jealous in a way. Should be very wicked. Congrats, bro. That's awesome.

What I mean by "in a way" is that is $3100 more than what I spent. But, only because I didn't have it to spend... would have if I could have. :)

Interesting discussion over here about X299 motherboard issues. Choosing the right motherboard that isn't cobbled together is going to be important. I'm glad I chose wisely on the Z370 motherboard. Sometimes it can be hard to do that with so much sugar-coated marketing fluff floating around. Definitely should consult with someone like @Johnksss@iBUYPOWER or the hard-hitters at places like overclock.net or hwbot.org forum. Only way to get straight answers would be from the guys that are running heavily overclocked X299 systems.
