So my roommate is really frustrated with his bargain machine and I happen to have an i7-4770K laying around that I'm not using. I already confirmed his ECS board (currently using an i3-4340) can support it but I had him order IC Diamond, however, does it even work well with the stock Intel heatsink? I wasn't really thinking about how crappy the heatsinks are (there will be lots of swearing with me trying to get the heatsink on tomorrow, I can't STAND the stock coolers) - will it even spread out the IC Diamond or should I apply it differently than just a pea in the center? He already was annoyed he had to spend 57 bucks on 16GB of DDR3 (9-9-9-24 timings no less) even though he's saving ~380 on the processor and I'd hate to have to tell him he needs a Hyper 212 Evo too lol.

Heh, he is getting a free 4770k. He can afford to be less cheap.

Stock cooler should have pre applied paste? Should be good enough if he aint OCing.

I used the preapplied paste, it used to be my chip. Actually... You know what, I think I'm stupid. This is the 4790K box which means it has brand new thermal material since I never used that heatsink, I put it under an H100i. I'll just keep the IC Diamond for myself then lulz

Wait, if you think that stock Intel cooler is a pain in the ass to install, you shouldn't even suggest Hyper 212 Evo, because it is a major PITA to install..
And I don't see why thermal compound application method would be different, a heatsink is a heatsink. Did the same on my lappy, parents' PC with stock Intel cooler, and my rig, it's same thing.

Also, can we be friends? I would completely overlook the fact that you vape, because getting a free CPU is totally worth. And I already come with 16 GBs or RAM, but I even wouldn't be mad if I had to buy another 16 GBs.

I actually don't know why I thought it was going to be such a pain to install. Apparently my cooler that came with my 4770k was just defective because this one was a snap in affair.

Yeah my attempt to be nice blew up in my face when the 16GB of Ballistix I told him to order was found to be defective today... BSODs within minutes on his machine and mine won't even boot into Windows with it. It's kind of his fault too though because I recommended he get Kingston Value RAM and it was too expensive for him (70 bucks I think) so I dropped down to Crucial @ 58 but of course I got blamed for it being defective. It wasn't a pleasant afternoon.

I don't know what I expected though, this is the same person who yells about the Comcast that I pay 200 a month for because he's never connected to the right network...

LOL, how is it your fault. **** happens with things. No offence but if someone is blaming you instead of being grateful, then they dont really deserve your help.

Oh I agree. My other roommate is grateful for everything. I mean seriously I didn't expect Crucial to send him bad memory, especially considering its just your basic 9-9-9-24 1600MHz RAM, it was faster and cheaper than the Kingston (Kingston was CL10 I believe).

The ironic thing is that his machine came with ADATA and it works fine. /facepalm
