So, I haven't been in the computer hardware for quite a while now... I have my Alienware m17x R2 for since 2009, and I'm getting tired of dissembling it to clean it, not to mention the amount of noise and power it draws out, was thinking about getting another gaming laptop, but i'm tired of them...so I decided to get a desktop, come here for help and buy another notebook(that i'll check later since it'll used for personal work)

So I need to assemble a desktop pc revolving around these core priorities: (CPU/GPU/ motherboard) since Storage is secondary

    Low Noise (at today's standard)
Low Power Consumption (at today's standard)
    * Small case which can be portable (like Asus Rog20/X51 Alienware)
Good for today's gaming, I think GTX970 is a good start
    Not OC'ing it
    Run Emulators ps2 or ps3 ?

That way I can buy for parts myself and have someone set it up for me

    Thanks guys!

Are you likely to do any modern 3d gaming? Also, what's your budget?

If you are building a PC the power consumption is going to be more than the most power hunger gaming laptops, assuming you are using a power supply over 330W.

The ROG20 and X51 are custom designs down to the motherboard being used, outside of finding an engineer to design/build your machine, the best you can do for a mini-ITX build would be a Fractal Design Node 304, especially if you are going to fit a GTX 970 or better card in.

For consideration as far as power draw and noise level, here is a review of a PC built by XMG

hi guys, thanks for the answer, my budget is around 1000usd the budget is around 2000 including laptop(useful for work) I know it won't be cheap, I was considering Rog20 which it is about 1000 or something, but I know that custom made are much much cheaper, and I only need the space saved because of moving or something (I already got the monitor/Mouse/Keyboard/Headset)

Is the Rog20 futureproof? if i can swap GPU/CPU

AnyKey: sorry wasn't so concious of it, that's why i put power consumption second, i just hope that the powerconsumption isnt high when I am browsing websites, but for gaming i don't care

Tbone: yeah, any modern gaming, and high and medium, interested in Metal Gear Solid and Ps2 Emulation

Need a fast CPU for emulation.

mITX 4790K + 970, if you build yourself definitely feasible within $1000.

Which makes it a good choice as it's the highest clocked CPU at stock and cooler than non Devil's Canyon

I forgot to ask the other expenses, like, motherboard, HDD, and forgot what else... been really really away

Or right, my bad. Missed that 4790K from non K has a difference of 400 MHz. Looks like I've spent too much time in i5 land...

ok, tomorrow i'll go and pull the trigger, is the 4790K high level ? i think i can do with a lower level cpu so I can save myself some money, and also what SSD are good right now? are they reliable now?

Also, this can be used with slim case ?

Yeah, it's a good CPU. And it isn't really a lower level CPU.
SSD these days are pretty reliable. Statistically they break less than HDDs (usually controllers break).
I have a Crucial M500, served me well so far.

I mean, a good i5, that will serve me all the purpose (run all games/emulation) and low fan noise/low power consumption

Also, can this 970x fit in a small case?

Not unless you're willing to overclock said i5 to match frequency of the i7

I mean, I don't know if a midrange i5 is capable of running today's game or have a bigger influence than the gtx 970(the core of the pc), that's why I asked if i could skimp money out of that

What case and 970 variant are we talking about?
i5 4690K is what people usually recommend for gaming, because they don't really benefit from stuff what i7 has to offer. On the other hand, if you need HT for emulation, but want to keep your expenses low, a Xeon E3-1231 is a nice compromise. It has the lowest clock of them all (3,4 vs 3,5 vs 4), so that's definitely something to take a note of, but it also comes with HT, which helps in multitasking.
If you just need GHz and don't want to overclock, take the i7.
For low fan noise you might want an aftermarket CPU cooler.

I will mostly run emulated games for playstation 2, and today's games...

About the 970 variants, I don't know which variant i should look for, preferably the smallest one/low noise/ to fit in a small case

the psx2 emulator need this cpu spec:
Modern quad-core CPU. Intel i5-2400 or AMD FX-8350 or higher.

Once again, do you have a particular case in mind?
A full sized 970 can fit into cases like Antec ISK600, so technically you should be fine. But if you absolutely need a small 970, you could look at https://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/GTX970DCMOC4GD5/ or Gigabyte equivalent.

is there any performance difference between the mini and the normal sized one? the mini creates a lot of noise ?
because I want to have a low profile desktop which can be packed away in my luggage in the future and future proof meaning it can be swapped

To be honest, I don't know. You can read this review - http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2015/01/15/asus-geforce-gtx-970-directcu-mini-review/1
Performance wise it should be pretty much the same as a normal 970. It also comes with higher clocks from the factory.

well... pulled the trigger, based on 970, they didnt had the small 970... but oh well.... I think I can sometime get the silver something case later

now i got to install all drivers, I need the motherboard, and gpu... but the website is too confusing and I don't know what to download, anyone point me a

    motherboard:
    https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/B85MK/HelpDesk_Download/

    gpu:
    https://www.asus.com/us/Graphics_Cards/STRIXGTX970DC2OC4GD5/HelpDesk_Download/

and then I can test the system !!!

(my Alienware physical CD/DVD is broken !, so I cannot access the drivers from the Cds)

    Congrats
From GPU website you don't need anything, unless you need some software like GPU Tweak. Get driver from NVidia website. For mobo get the LAN, audio, chipset, etc. drivers. If you afraid you missed something, go to Device Manager and look for exclamation marks.

Thanks bro, it's all because of you that I could get this rig, and to be honest it is must better than to get another gaming laptop which I won't get anywhere, too loud, get dusty fast, too much maintanance for simple things that desktop can do , the only thing I regret is not buying the Silverstone case... which I think I'll buy it later, but I don't know what i'll do with the case that I have, in case Im concerned about the airflow, but buying the silverstone might require me to buy another motherboard i think ?

Yeah I'm doing it, and the Chipset, do I need to install it everytime ? or it is something I can ommit ?

I'm running on a 30 day evaluation on Win7, I don't know if I should buy Win10 for better performance or buy a Cdkey somewhere
so I'll need to install every driver again if i'm moving to a new Win

Doing the Nvidia Install... Im surprised it's more than 10mins for a simple gpu driver install...

    You're welcome!
Yeah, you have a micro ATX, that Silverstone takes mini ITX and DTX mobos... Can't you exchange, or is too late?
Both laptop and desktops have pros and cons. For example, I was recently away for a few days, and really wanted to play some TW3, but unfortunately my desktop PC was far away. With laptop I would be able to play it, well, maybe not, 240m is way too outdated.
But you get the point, laptops are great too.

Get the chipset driver and management engine thingy (the first one, the other one is older version).

Personally I prefer Windows 7 for desktop (I have 10 on my tablet), but without trying you never know. You can still buy Windows 7 and upgrade to Windows 10 for free later on (until July 29 of the next year). If you don't feel like reinstalling drivers, you can always do a OS upgrade, however I never recommend going along that path, clean install always is better.

Unfortunately i cannot change cases... since the store didn't sell silverstone, i have to buy it online

the driver download in "Chipset" section, 1st and 2nd link ? right ?
I updated my Windows score, it is:
    processor: 7.8
    Ram: 7.8
    Graphics: 7.9
    Gaming Graphics: 7.9
    Primary Hard Disk: 5.9 !!!

Now... how I am getting 5.9 on an SSD?? how do i set it up well ?
mine is Samsung SSD 850 Evo, I ran magician software, and read/write speed is 500m/s

    I think i'll try more win7 for a little bit, then buy Win10 if i can't find Win7 key..

I didn't mean case, I meant exchange mobo.

    First and the third one.

Looks like a driver is missing. Check your BIOS, see if you have ACHI enabled as drive mode. It's usually enabled, but you never know. Also, run Windows Update or check Sammy website, you probably have a driver missing. Or if everything else fails you can always install Intel Rapid Storage Technology. It's more for RAID setups, but it also works in such cases, though modern OSes don't really need it.

I was downloading and waiting to install that rapid storage technology from intel, do i still need to install it?

    cool!
Now the only thing that I don't know is, how do I know that the integrated video card on the motherboard is active? and how do I turn it off, because at the back of the pc there's another TV out that doesn't comes from the 970

Also, shutting down takes quite a long time, like 30 seconds

Nice to know, I thought it was wasting computing power

I decided to buy windows 10, since I couldn't find anyplace that sells windows 7... and because of that Directx12, and I don't trust pirated or cracked OS since it compromises tons of things... so

I started searching for the drivers for windows 10 home and I couldn't find anything, the motherboard, Lan, and those, do you think i can use the ones for windows 7?

forgot it took so long to set up a new computer gosh.... and now i'm passing all the data from my alien to my new pc, getting permission is a *****, got a new rig for one day and haven't tested it yet...

I'm also concerned if Windows Firewall if enough for my needs, been enough with Comodo Firewall

And now i'll have to reformat the SSD

Check your mobo website and select Windows 10 as your OS.
If there are drivers what you can't find, use from 7 or 8.

I always used the default one, so I don't think I'll be able to help you there.
But do remember, no matter what firewall you have, it's nothing if you don't use your head.
