I've noticed recently that dell have the truelife screen option available on the uk website, for the vostro 1700.

I was just thinking, would it be a good idea to go for the glossy screen or not? I'm asking this because, i'm going to be buying my first laptop and be using it for office 2007, internet and email, writing java applications, visual studio 2008, dreamweaver and photoshop.

I know that dell have a good deal on the vostro 1700 (N0217005) a free memory upgrade to 3GB of DD2 RAM

    Any suggestions would be great.

    thanks in adance

Ok, I'm very opinionated on this subject, but.....
Glossy screens are VERY reflective, and unless you are in total darkness there are going to be a LOT of reflections, plus, any dirt or something fo the like on your screen shows more
If you care about really defined colors then it might be worht it, if not, get a matte screen

I assume you mean the 1440x900 as the 1920 screen has always been a TrueLife option. If they had the 1440x900 with TrueLife at the time I ordered I would've got it. Saying that the matte Samsung I have in here now (after going through 2 AUO's that developed dead pixels) is stunning - blacks are black, whites are white, lush colours and sharp with very little light bleed (AUO was a little washed out and fuzzy with a fair bit of light bleed) so not sure I'd change - TL is great for watching videos but is like staring at a mirror in a light environment.

If you're going to work outdoors a lot, then might as well get matte. You might not stand the reflections. However, if you'll be doing your work indoors for the most part, glossy might be a good idea. I use my Vostro mostly indoors, inside my room, and I love how it's brighter than my matte 17" desktop LCD.

If you don't plan on using it outdoors I would go with the glossy screen. If you using it out doors do the matte screen
