Hi,I'm considering buying either a Sony Vaio AR 41 E (17'' ;Intel Core 2 Duo-7100,1GB RAM; Nvidia 8400;120 Hard Drive)
    ..or,for $250 less I can buy a Dell Vostro 17'' with much better hardware-intel Santa Rosa-7300,4mb cache ; 2 GB RAM ;Nvidia 8600; 160 GB Hard drive,better battery...
As far as I am a graphic designer my priorities are the display quality and the ability to stay cool and in shape after long hours(days) of video rendering..
The Sony Vaio's have a reputation of solid performers but so do the Dell's.
Do you think that the display and the build quality of the Vaio AR 41E and much better than the Dell's?

May want to check out the "What Notebook Should I Buy" forum.

My Vostro 1500 gets gamed on for hours upon hours at a time with no issues overheating, but I've only owned it a couple weeks.

I would say if you get warranty/accidental damage coverage, for that timespan there's not that much to worry about. In the event something goes wrong, it's rectified.
