So I loaded up some games and it turns out the low end 8400 cant play a lot of games decently. What mxm does the vostro have, if any? What is the best vid card I can upgrade to? 8700, 8800? Also does it support the Penyn [I think thats the spelling...?] cpus? idk what to do with this system. Specs in my sig. Suggestions on what to upgrade and when?
    thanks

You can get it with the 8600gt...check their site. And its not mxm. And yes, the latest bios (A03) adds the cpu support.

Upgrading to the 8600GT will be relatively easy, though you are probably going to want to purchase some Arctic Silver 5 as you'll need it for the new part.

Upgrading the CPU really isn't worth it. Just don't.

Get more RAM, but you already know that.

You do realize you are going to void the warranty right?

yea i already did ruin the warranty though, by upgrading the ram from 1gb to 1.5gb. So there is absolutely no hope for a 8700 or 8800? Maybe a XPS GPU [15" model if there is one?]

No hope for an 8700 or 8800. Dell uses their own design, and its only found inside of Dell notebooks. So you're options are limited to what the 1500 and 1520 come with.

You did not void the warranty by upgrading the RAM. That's considered a user-replaceable part. Upgrading the GPU will void though since you have to basically take the entire laptop apart.

Now you have to get a DeLL 8600m GT, 8700, 8800 (proprietary connection) which could be a problem as DeLL has no interest selling aftermarket GPU's when they can sell you a whole new system.
