    It's two very different computers.

For one the vostros use the same magnesium alloy Dell uses in all it's desktop. It's a bit sturdier in my opinion. And the case is a bit more expensive compared ot the Inspirions but easier to assemble (according to the builders).

The Inspirons are meant to put Dell back on the top of the laptop market. They are a different direction compared to the past several years of Dell designs(probably because Michael Dell is back). I personally love em and I know everyone here at Dell think and believe it's the product that will put Dell back on top. Seriously, Dell hasn't been this hip and edgy since the "Dell guy" days.

I agree it looks quite different (though I haven't received mine yet), at least in terms of casing and things like the anti-spill keyboard coating, but it doesn't help matters when the Dell salesmen tell you otherwise! Yesterday I called to order a Vostro and I first was routed to the Consumer Sales dept, where a salesman straight up told me that they were the same computer in a different skin, and that I should buy an Inspiron from him!

Naturally, I didn't bite (the price difference was negligible when all coupons and discounts for both models were taken into consideration), so I made my way on over to Small Business and completed my purchase of a Vostro 1400.

If anyone in interested, by the way, here were the specs and the price I scored it for:

    1 222-9654 Vostro 1400, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz FSB, 4M L2 Cache
    1 320-5566 14.1 inch Wide Screen XGA+ TL LCD for Vostro 1400
    1 311-7285 1GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 DIMM

    1 341-4905 160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
1 420-7289 Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
1 412-0995 Dell Exclusive MediaDirect Instant Play Software Application

1 420-7367 PC Tune-up, 1 Year (For English OS only)
    1 430-2452 Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)

    SUBTOTAL $1,177

I will be putting 2GB RAM in there; I already have it sitting here on my desk. It's an extra from all the technician work I do!

I made a mistake ordering the 9-cell battery though and not getting an extra instead for just $19 more. I don't think I could call them and get this remedied now that the order has been placed without cancelling and reordering. Does anyone know?

Again, the Inspiron's have these same features, the magnesium alloy case, strike-zone keyboard, etc. The idea that the vostros are "sturdier" is - pure marketing- and nothing else.

Yeah, many configurations have the vostro cheaper. Mine was a few hundred $ cheaper as an Inspiron, when I ordered it. Now that some of the Inspiron free updates have expired (free memory upgrade, free HD upgrade, etc) they are the same price for my config.
