Quick one for you folks - I've been dragged, kicking & screaming into helping a mate out with bringing his Dell Inspiron 1564 Laptop back to life.

The faulty motherboard has been replaced on it (replacement HDD coming through tomorrow) but the silly sod didn't create the Dell Restore DVDs for it - what I need to confirm is whether the Windows 7 HP COA is OEM based or not, so I can download the relevant ISO file to get the OS reinstalled.

The COA does not contain any specific reference to OEM but I assume it is and just need some clarification from the forum members, especially those who have that model of laptop in the UK - any input is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to do a clean install of Windows with a retail DVD and enter the key on the bottom of the notebook. The only hitch is that you would have to call MS to activate, but it only takes a couple minutes.

I've done this on Alienware notebooks and I've no reason to believe it would be any different here.

I second the above post. Never had any issue installing with retail media and activating with Dell keys.
