I ordered a Dell Travel Remote M'08 a while back and I received it yesterday. The problem is that I can't get it to work at all. I have checked the battery and it's ok.

I formatted the hard drive and installed Vista x64 shortly after I got the laptop so could it be that the driver for the IR receiver is missing?

Yes, almost certainly. Go to the support site for your model and under Input Devices you'll find ITE Driver for your remote

I've tried installing the driver several times now and still nothing, guess they sent me a broken remote. :(

Have you merged the Dell.reg file into the Registry? This is what is responsible for making the Dell Travel Remote work correctly - without performing that step, even with the ITE driver installed it'll do nothing.

I installed the reg files and as far as I can tell it's not working now either.

That's odd. Did you try reseating the coin cell battery? (that thing's a pain in the rear at times). If that doesn't do anything, you might have a dead remote or a dead battery.
