    Hi!
I had to replace a failed HD on an Inspiron 1525. I followed the recommended install procedure in a previous thread[Dell Vista Laptop Reformat and Bloatware Removal Guide]. Thanks to those that made this thread possible! I had to reinstall all drivers[dell.com] but I'm not sure whether I should install the one labeled "Dell System Software" it is a 40.1MB file that may contain much of Dell's bloatware. My question is whether or not to install this system driver. Thanks, in advance, for any help offered.

    Chuck

Absolutely. In fact, it should be installed first, even before the chipset. No bloatware there. It applies Microsoft QFE fixes amongst other things.

Description from the driver: Dell System Software is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Dell System Software is necessary for correct operation of your Dell computer. The program automatically detects your computer and operating system and installs updates appropriate for your configuration.

Thanks Jason1214, LPTP-LVR! My OS is Vista Business. Everything works great, but when I run a Norton 4.0 360 Diagonostic Report it states that it has detected an Inoperable Hardware Device.
    Device Type: Base System Driver
Device Status: Device Drivers are not installed (Code 28)
    Plug & Play ID: PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_022F1028&REV_12\4&46E6CB1&0&4AF0

Does any one know which specific driver I need to obtain and install to correct this problem? Again, Thanks for all your help!

    Hi all,

I just bought a Precision M4500, Win7 64 bit, and installed the DSS version 7.01, A01 which I downloaded from the Dell support marked as "urgent". But I wonder if it actually works for two reasons:

    1. I ran the installer a second time, the installer stated that the DSS does NOT exist so I installed it another time, the installer still cannot find it.

    I installed it both ways
    - DELL_SYSTEM-SOFTWARE_A01_R260746.exe
    - DSS_UTIL_WIN_R260746.EXE

The installer still cannot find it.

    2. In the registry, I do find a few KB Patches listed here:
    HKLM/Software/Dell/System Software/7.0.1,
    e.g. the KB974476-v2-x64.msu

Well, when I then ran my first MS Update, the KB974476 did'nt show up! I cannot find it anywhere in the system.

So I really wonder whether or not DSS works correctly, or even if it is installed correctly. How can I verify this?

    Cheers
