    Hi,

I recently "swapped" my Dell Vostro 1710 for a Dell Studio 17 which is - overall - a much better machine and only slightly more expensive.

Main problem for me currently: I have to use Vista 64-bit, which requires signed drivers (which you can switch off - but that's not the best idea...). I8KFanGUI has such an unsigned driver.

Before trying it, I would like to know if someone is successfully controlling their CPU/GPU fans on a Dell Studio (my fan basically runs the whole time, except some minor pauses, even if the laptop is unused... latest Bios release is installed).

Perhaps that's specific to Vista 64-bit?

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

I was able to install I8KFanGUI (you can browse my posts to see how I did that) and use it to control fan speed. However the chipset is not officially supported by I8KFan yet so you only have manual control for slow, fast, and off. It lags your system out when you put it into auto-mode. Sometimes when my fan is on when it is below 30c I open Kfan and manually turn it off then exit out of the program entirely and the fan stays off.

I use it on my Studio 15. I just had it on high for a bit to see what happened. I really don't use it anymore except to see the temp.
