Looks interesting. Does anyone know anything about the Hybrid SLI graphics? Is it anything like ATI's hybrid CrossFire?

Yeah this confirms what we saw from The Register article a few weeks back. They said XPS would become a sub brand. So these models fall perfectly in line with that news. Finally, something that makes sense.

These Inspiron Studios seem to be the netbooks. Looks like we should see them in September.

    so montevina in august :)
    but i want a studio 16" now

one thing i find weird: they say there studio xps 13" and 15" will be out november
but it the later picture, it shows its going to be a 13" and 16" and not a 15"
    weird..

its not like dell you make a silly mistake like that, as im pretty sure there wont be a 13",15" and 16"

    FINALLY!

November is really far away though and I will definitely need a new notebook before Christmas. Looks like they're ditching the matte finish on the current XPS laptops for a glossier look. And is it just me or did the Studio 16 have some kind of wooden finish near the hinge?

they look and sound great, and i think i will buy the 16" studio xps.
but they sound more expensive then the m1530/m1330.
as they have a loads of stuff in them. things like illuminated keyboard, nice finsh, Hybrid SLI graphics(2 gpu's?), edge to edge full HD 16:9 screen etc.

current XPS Notebook should die out in Q1 2009... we should also see a introduction in the netbook range.. Inspirons and Vostros (for emerging markets only) also the introduction of a studio desktop lineup in september (not the studio hybrid thats currently available) anyway lots of strategies being made by dell this year..

Note: this is official news.. as seen in the ppt presentation.

@Jayson: Do you know when Dell is going to make an official, public announcement about these new laptops? I'd like to know what kind of hardware they'll be carrying.

Also, to those wondering about Hybrid SLI: It's not quite the same as regular SLI where you have two dedicated GPUs giving you a boost in performance. Hybrid SLI uses one dedicated GPU and an integrated GPU which will probably add a few frames per second while gaming. I believe you can also switch to the integrated GPU to conserve battery life.

@ElectricTool: yes you right about hybrid SLI.. when gaming you ll use the dedicated gpu when on windows or word etc it will be switched off making battery life longer... about the official public release i cant say... but its still soon.. just giving you guys the heads up on the models..

Well according to one of the attachments it showed the XPS 1530 is getting a montevina refresh and it said from august - acotober/september. If this is true, what gpu do you think they would stick in there.

@link747: From November the Studio XPS 13, 15, 16 will be replacing the XPS 1330, 1530 and 1730. Note 16" 16:9 is the new trend to replace 17" 16:10. although available xps lineups will be equiped with montevina in september.

Do you know when in September Dell is going to equip the XPS line with montevina platform? I am just wondering as I am about to make my purchase and if it is close enough, I might hold off and wait and see what options they offer, cpu/gpu wise.

    Thanks

The slides say August, you say September? So that means the slides are a little dated already or does it mean that perhaps Inspiron / Studio models will get Montevina in August still and XPS in September?

Anyway, thanks a lot for the slides! Great news too as keeping the old model (with improved chipset, GPU, CPU, less heat, lighter perhaps etc) is more than good enough! The m1330 is a great model already, just lacking Montevina at the moment. Great news too that the new Studio XPS 13 will include a bluray option, I'm hoping the current m1330 will get it too when Montevina goes in. :D

Maybe we could swap motherboards :D.

Extremely nice find Jayson. Although things seem to be greatly improving design wise at Dell, there have been too many delays updating the XPS and Latitude line. Almost every other major supplier has introduced new consumer laptops and/or refreshed old lines with the Montevina platform. The XPS lines should have been updated by now and these Studio XPS systems should be launching now to compete with the Sony Vaio Z series, among others. I for one would have possibly bought a Studio XPS 13, but similar options are available NOW from other companies so why wait.

That's when the whole package minus WiMax came out. There is no indication that they will add a whole new platform to existing models and then replace them in two months.

The whole powerpoint seems to be flawed on its technical definitions. There aren't any "Montevina processors." They are still Penryn. Montevina is the chipset. Seems like this was written more for management rather any tech managers.

I guess that they will upload a bios update that enables the usage of new processors, but just that not new graphics nor new chipset...

But its awesome, just imagine a p processor of 25 watts 6 megs of cache, 2.53GHz on the m1330. That would be awesome.

But you are right there are no "montevina processors" they are penryn...

Urm according to wikipedia its still socket P
    Processors - Socket P / Micro-FCPGA/Micro-FCBGA

    * a second-generation Intel Core 2 Duo (codenamed Penryn) 45nm processor with 1066 MT/s FSB with clock speeds ranging from 2.26 GHz to 3.06 GHz, also featuring SSE4.1 support, which adds 47 new instructions to SSSE3. It is planned to consume no more than 29W, compared to Merom's and first-generation Penryn's 34W TDP.

Btw you can use old generation proccesor in the montevina chipset, look at the zepto laptops for example.

But I know it doesnt sound logic to fit a new processor on an older chipset...

That would be pretty cool if the current XPS line got a few upgrades, but not a big redesign, so that the current deals, coupons, and low prices would remain. That's what I'm hoping for. Perhaps Montevina and an ATI GPU.

If the updates just cause the prices to increase by 50%, then I'll just stick the the M1530 I ordered, and be content.

Yeah it wouldnt work on "normal" settings but the fsb could be downclocked to fit the requirements of the chipset, indeed as that guy states its not worth to upgrade because it would barely offer a minimal cpu power increase, but remember that some of those processors draw 25watts of power and thats useful for the m1330.

25watts of power usage on the m1330 would mean less battery drain, and less heat ;). Less heat for the m1330 would be awesome in theory, the cpu would cool down, the northbridge would cool down also the GPU would cool down, those are good news for people who have faulty nvidia gpus, or people who play videogames :).
