Hello. My WDC WD2500BEVS-75UST0 (HDD) "clicking" in IDLE MODE.
On normal or heavy load I can't hear the click.
But in IDLE - my WDC clearly "clicking".
I used NHC and set the option "Max Performance 254" and It is fine all the time.
But I hate NHC and overall addition programs in the start-up.

I found too the HDD has jumper:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1410
To reduce "Spin UP" but I'm under warranty, and it is no option.

Any advice. It is not big deal, and I can hear it only when my HDD is IDLE but....

    OS: Windows Vista
    HDD temperatures: normal range - 33-35-37 C
    Maximum reached: 40-41 C
The temperatures are fine by my opinion.

    NO BAD SECTORS!

    Thank you.

I'm not exactly sure what is the purpose of this program.
But I tried "Spin Down" option.Well my "click" is not "spin down".
The Spin down was longer and harder click, my click is quiet and very very short like "Clock's click".
Again it is not big deal till my HDD works property.

    Thank you.

The WD hard drive on my 1520 has been doing this. I didn't notice until I was home and it was dead quiet.

Also didn't know that NHC can fix it. I'm going to try that.

Im my experience with desktops, a ticking sound is not good, and in my cases has always got worse - and led to hard drive failure. My HP DV1000 Hard drive recently started doing this so I immediately backed up and replaced the HD. Ticking in my circumstances has generally been pretty loud though - and a noticeable decrease in preformace as the ticking becomes more regular, and louder.

On that note, my new HD has sarted making very faint ticking, but it's intermittent and not very loud - and has only begun since the drive has been over 1/2 full.

I'm no tech genius, but I would suggest backing up and keeping an ear out - at least if it does fail your prepared.

    Thank you for the advice.
I had all my data on DVD's.
My notebook is now on 7 days *may be 6* - So I still have my things on DVD's!
The ticking is quiet but I can hear it!
Strangly for me on heavy load - the issue is gone...

In that case, as your pc is young - I wouldn't be too worried but it's always best to be cautious especially if you have work files on your pc. My cases of HD problems have never been with a new drive, and I've not heard of this happening with a new drive, my dv1000's drive was 2.5yrs old before it needed replacement, and in any case I woud reccomend replacing your HDD every 2-3 yrs tops just to be on the safe side, IMO the old 'if it aint broke dont fix it' does not go with computers ;)

You can get Dell to replace it...

My WD drive is quiet as can be (though it was purchased aftermarket and didn't ship with my Studio).

I just got my WD drive in June to replace the Toshiba drive that failed on me. Wonder if it could be another bad drive?

If it does fail, I'll have to buy one myself as it just went out of warranty.
