Wish to pick the brains of some of the technical chaps here.

Basically i have a Dell Studio 1747 which is quite a high spec on Windows 7, Blu-ray, 1080p, 1TB hard drive, 2GB Graphics thingy, 8 GB memory, i7 processor.. Right this is the thing.

I wish to upgrade the i7 Processor to the best i can put on it. Is this possible? As in I'm not sure if the processor is soldered in, or if i can upgrade it even, or even which processor to buy for the motherboard etc?..

I have read people upgrading their i3 processors to i7's on the Dell 17 series so it should be possible.

I'd be much obliged with some guidance here (other then open it up etc)..

Just to note, i did stick in the service tag on the Dell website but i didn't notice it gave me any options for processors.. (i don't think).

If it helps i attached some relevant (or not) CPU-Z Info..

The processor isn't soldered for sure... if the 720QM works, I would think you should be able to at least get up the 840QM. The 920XM should physically fit, but it's a 55W CPU, so I don't know if the 1747 will like it.

As Commander Wolf stated, you should be able to use all Arrandale/Clarksfield CPU's but I advise against the 920XM/940XM as they are 55 watt TDP and the cooling system on the Studio is woeful to be nice.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. I have a Dell Studio 1749, but this one has a i3-330M.

From the looks of things I can upgrade to the i7. It has the HM55 Express chipset, socket 989 rPGA

    mobo is Dell 029DYC

Any help is greatly appreciated. :D

If needed, I will post up CPU-Z screens.

    Thanks again.

Nevermind, looks like I can only go up to an i5 520m on this particular model.

    No worries. :D

you should be able to go to an i7-620m at least. My gf has a Studio 1749 with a 620m (installed by dell)

Thank you for the reply. I may take a chance and try the upgrade. First the SSD and more ram, then maybe the i7 620m. :D
