I just bought my studio 17 last month, but the num lock light is not illuminating. is there any setting for that or because of hardware problems? :)

You may want to see if you're hitting the correct key combination. I know on my E6400 it's fn + numlock, not just numlock. If you're sure your key combination is correct, and the light still isn't lighting, it's most likely a hardware fault. I've heard a lot of bad things about the media button bar on the 1535 and 1735, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if the problem still exists (even on newer Studio models).

Actually, the Studio 17 has its own Num Lock button, no Fn combos required. And the little indicator lamp is part of the keyboard itself, not the media panel.

So, if your Num Lock light doesn't come on but Num Lock still works, you can bet that it's just a dead lamp on your keyboard. Have Dell replace the keyboard and you should be set.
