I read the other forums but noticed that the temp for me reached maximum 80 in normal use still the laptop just shuts down! have attached the screenshots from HW monitor.

I opened the laptop removed the dust still the same! i noticed that the thermal paste on proc was quite less!!! one more thing the fan that is near the proc heatsink is throwing air downwards instead of the back vent... i remember that hot air used 2 come out the back vent but now it dosent!

Is the issue with the fan? Can it be a RAM issue? will buying a laptop cooler help?

    Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

Have you tried running Dell Diagnostics? Bad RAM can be ruled out with MemTest

Try repasting the CPU, blowing out all dust in the heatfins, heatsink, fan.

Then try a clean install of Windows or booting from a Linux disc to see if you are still getting the same issue.

After a clean install, you may have power circuitry issues with your motherboard.

I think it's the fan throwing hot air downward that's the problem. Those temperatures are kinda high and as a safety measure, the system shuts down. If possible, shift the direction of the fan. How is it that it is no longer aiming air out of the back vent? That's odd. Try to manipulate the fan to point in the correct direction.

Also if you notice the thermal paste is lacking, hit it with some of the Arctic Silver stuff. Used it recently on a overheating issue with my Xbox 360, works great. Who says the 3 rings of death Xbox issue is a deal breaker? Just overheating is all.

how to run dell Diagnostics? isnt it only for 32 bit? anyways i dont think there is a major RAM issue or else it wud not start only! the laptop gets shut only once in few days! so i think some minor issue... have removed all de dust i cud! will try the thermal paste n a WIN re install :)

@Vanti... its not possible 2 change the direction of fan in Dell Studio laptop... i n not sure whats happened wud like inputs 4m other Studio owners to confirm if the fan throws the air backwards or downwards :p

I have a Dell Studio 17 and the air does pass through the back vent. Is your fan somehow spinning in an opposite direction? I don't know if that's even possible or how it could happen. The bottom line is the unit is in all likelihood, overheating and once that issue is overcome, the system should stabilize back to normal again. The paste should help quite a bit and give your more stability. A really odd issue you've got here. I can't recall anything quite like it in recent memory. Do keep us in the loop on how it turns out.

If the fan is turning the wrong way maybe the connector is attached reveresed (not sure if this is possible) Was the laptop repaired recently?

I had a 720qm and no single core ever exceeded 72c ... even under the harshest of conditions

anything over 70c is probably something to note. The dual cores typically can run faster and might run a bit hotter. You shouldn't be in trouble unless it exceed 80c (100c actually, but THIS is the absolute limit). I can't imagine any cooling design working properly, that would allow things to exceed 80c.

There is a powerconnector on the fan.
If the connector has been placed the wrong way around, the fan will blow 'the other way'. Reopen the lappy, try to reset the powercable for the fan the other way around, and see what happens. PS. The lappy will not break, or burst into flames.

for temporary solution you may be able to go into your power settings and clock down the processor by only letting the max performance be say 50%, when my fan kicks in high gear mine goes to 80C as well...currently trying to work with dell but they are being their usual selves

@ Anushkool: I cannot say what way the fan is supposed to revolve, due to not having access to that model. What I DO know, is that if it blows downwards, the connector IS applied wrongly. have you tested it yet? I HAVE already adviced you on this.
