My laptop freezes after an hour or two of working with TeamViewer, and I think this is because of the overheating problem.
What would be better - to add copper shims (in the places where i drew red circles: gpu ram, gpu chip, south bridge heatsink) or to stick with thermal pads that were there originally.

If going with the copper shims: which sizes would be best?
If it the shims would be too wide, they might touch the metal pins near the gpu chip.
Is there a preferable thickness, while taking into account the step of the cooler, - see bellow -, and heat conductivity?
The cooler is not flat at it's bottom, it has a step (about 0.5mm high) dividing video ram and the gpu unit.

If it were overheating beyond its limits i think the CPU and laptop would simply shutoff immediately when it gets above the threshold. I'm replacing or fan and heatsinks for this reason i5
1558 with ATI GPU because the fan sometimes will stick/stop causing overheat and then power off completely rather than overheat. Reason I'm buying whole new heatsink assembly is because only$9 dollars complete with thermal compound and pads.
What temp were you at when it froze? I guess you've already tried other solutions like fresh install of OS and programs? -
I did try all that. With this model it's a hardware issue - they just make more heat than today's CPUs.
Eventually I applied thermal pads for 6.0 W/mK.
Now it works for at least a couple of hours. Beyond that I haven't tested yet.
While working with TeamViewer, Max core temp reaches 55 degrees, than the fan cools it down to 45-50 degrees.
This toggling becomes more frequent as time passes and the laptop's bottom panel heats up.
I'm wondering whether thermal pads with a bigger thermal conductivity parameter will give better results... -
Hi ,
I have a Dell Studio 1558. It heats a lot indeed but it does not shut down because a use a laptop support so that the heat is dissipated.
It's old, has not fan, but the design is effective for the air to circulate
I also just saw something called Artic Silver - I think i will try that - maybe it can suit you too, if its not what you have already used.
