    Hi All,

I own a dell studio 1558 laptop. Config:
    4 GB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 1 GB
    Intel i5 @ 2.5GHz
    500 GB HD

I ran into an issue last week while I was playing this game LOL I found over the internet. Great game though. After playing it for around 2 weeks when I tried to run this game, the system crashed after 2 minutes of game play. I thought that game might be corrupted so I did a reinstall but the problem was still there but this time after crash I wasn't able to boot up my system. There was no display on my screen, so I goggled and found out that my laptop might have a bad graphic chip.
I took my laptop to a technician and he told me there is some issue with graphic chip so he somehow repaired that part but he got stuck at overheating. He even replaced the heat sink and thermal paste in front of me but the issue is still intact.
I am not able to do any sort of graphic intense task and kind of stuck at this void. Even if I am watching a video using vlc player, GPU Temp goes at around 70 Deg C. I tested my system using OCCT from this site and it gave 100 deg C after 2 seconds of 3d intense task.

What could be the reason? Do I need to replace my mobo because I can't live without games? :(

    Thanks,
    Jimmy

    1. Clean fan ..........( just blow super hard with your mouth)
    2. Clean heatsink ..........( just blow super hard with your mouth)
    3. Change thermal paste on both CPU & GPU ( if you never done IT before, ask a friend for help or something)

PS........often its ENOUGH with step 1 & 2......... If its not helps 100%....do step 3

Pss. You have step by step guide how to screw evrything apart on DELL.Com/support

I would be VERY surprised if your GPU is broken in a way with just heat issues ......IF a GPU start to troubles it shows in other things mostly

Worse case is to replace the Mobo

Already did all the steps you mentioned cleaned the fan and did the thermal pasting but still no progress.
I mean hows that the GPU is not able to expel heat?

It is in contact with heat sink. Fan is working great. But is not getting transferred from GPU. Worst case is to replace the mobo but I don't want to do that until I'm sure that graphic chip is faulty.

I have set fan speed to 90% and while using a browser GPU core temp is 68 Deg C.

    Some HELP needed here.

one time i seen a heatpipe with a small hole on the copper pipe......(2-3cm from the heatsink) ...very seldom this happens.

maybe your heatpipe is not working 100% and therefore the cold air from the fan/heatsink not coming throw to your cpu & gpu

......... maybe your mobo is OK ?..........look careful on the heatsink & heatpipes if they look correct.

Ok. I'll check it tomorrow and let you know if there is any issue with copper pipe.
    Thanks for info though.

    Hi KSMB,

Sorry for such a late reply.
I checked the heat-sink. There is no hole in the copper pipes. They are all in good shape. I guess there might be an issue with the graphic chip.

Just wanted to know that have you seen this sort of issue anywhere? Is there any way or success in replacing the graphic chip?

    Cheers,

    Hi

I heard about copper shims that people use to provide better cooling. Will it be of any use?

    Cheers

    Hi Jimmy,

Please check if the heatsink is seated properly on the GPU chipset. The heat transfer will not be optimum if there are gaps between the GPU chip and the heatsink. You also run the hardware diagnostics and check if all the components are working properly by following the steps provided below:
Run Built-In Diagnostics for Your System | Dell US

Let me know about your findings.

    Hi Rajath,

I already checked that as I mentioned that in previous posts. But There is no way to see properly if the sink actually touches the gpu top because there are lot of other components around gpu that obstruct the view.

About hardware diagnostics, I could not complete that because if I run my system in diag. mode or even let it stay there at boot option, then it shuts down after 4-5 minutes because of overheating. So system is stable at around 70 deg gpu temp once window boots up but during any graphic tasks, temp shoots above 100 in seconds.

So I was thinking a copper shim might be a good idea. What do you think?

    Cheers

    Hi harsh1066,

Thank you for your reply and for providing an update. You may use a copper shim for better contact and heat transfer. I suggest you to reseat the processor heatsink and fan assembly that also fixes on the GPU and check if the issue get fixed.

Please let me know about your findings.

    Hi All,

Just to let you know I finally tried the copper shim and I am amazed to see that it worked. Bingo.
    I used following size:
    10 x 10 x 0.7MM (for GPU)
    25 x 10 x 0.9MM (for GPU memory)

Now I am gonna replace that low quality heat compound with "Cooler Master Extreme Fusion X1 Thermal Compound". Gonna order this today.
My current idle temp is 55 and at gaming it goes around 85.

    Thanks for your reply everyone.

    Cheers.

    Hi Harsh,

From where did you got the copper shim?

    Hi Buddies,
My lapy is having the same problem and it didn't respond for power button. I shown to a technician said that it is a problem of display .He replaced the led screen and vga card. At that it works and after one days, again the same issue come over it is overheated and suddenly stoped working and didn't works and dell label also doesn't appear. So, please give your suggestions to what step i have to take whether to change the mother board or laptop.
