Seems the changes are a bit more than that...

A new motherboard with new chipset (Intel PM55) off course.

Three USB ports, with no usb/e-sata combo. That's a bad suprise. Why would Dell downgrade the studio here?

Soon the option for a 1GB Ati hd 4570 (according to the manual).

HDD are standard 7200 rpm and not 5400 rpm!

HDMI 1.3 (instead of HDMI 1.2): more processing power and bandwith, supports deep color (= more than 24-bit) and Dolby TrueHD bitstream capable are the most important changes.

No 1600x900 screen resolution option. Seems like this screen resolution will never come indeed to Europe :-(

where the f on the dell website does it say 1555 or 1557? I received my studio 15 last week to realize I own a 1555, and that too I figured out myself by finding pics online.

It tells you on your order confirmation if you place the order - or at least it did on mine.

Also, when customising your system, on the bottom right hand side of the screen, if you scroll down you will see the following:

Not exactly where I would have put the official model number, but then I don't run one a massively successful computer manufacturing company :)

Anyone who already has a 1555, I'm looking to put the 1557 in a sleeve and then into a semi hard case/bag, anyone know of a good neoprene sleeve without zippers that fits the 1557?

I just bought a Dell Studio 1557 (Intel Core i7 720QM) but I can't find out if that laptop was designed to delivery the full 2.8 GHz on single task using the Turbo Boost. Because I read an article about Intel Core i7 for laptops that Intel does not assure that all computer would be able to reach 2.8GHz which will depends on how efficient the cooler system would be.....

Please, is there anyone that can help me on it ?????

Yes this is 100% correct; it is not guaranteed to hit that speed on all computers. You see the i7 overclocks as long as it stays within a certain temperature range. If your notebook is inefficient at cooling, then it is possible it wont overclock to the maximum possible speed.

Then that would be bad news? From everything I've heard the 1555's run pretty warm (hot?). And are we talking about a manual overclocking, or does the i7 do this automatically? Don't know much about what I'm getting
Still in production 3 weeks now

The i7 employs a function called Turbo Boost; this increases the speed of a single or two cores based on the work that's being run; but it only does so within a certain thermal envelope. However, there simply isn't enough info about how this is impacted in a mobile environment yet - they've not been out long and therefore the trials we have are within a small subset of notebook computers. Be interesting to see if you can run some tests on yours when it arrives.

No doubt you'll still get amazing performance regardless.

Awesome fragile! Thanks for clarifying, I would love to really put this through the paces so to speak and see what kind of performance I can get out of it, once I get it. Maybe you could help me out when/if I get it... Waiting is painfully hard....

Is the benchmark software free? Anything else people would want to know when I get it?

Ordered a Dell Studio 1557 on the 27th of September; delivery date says October 16th but I doubt Dell will keep its promise.. The orderstatus still says 'In Production'.. :(

I can't wait to get it..

    Edit:
BTW, in my order confirmation email, the following was mentioned in the specs of my laptop:
Wireless : Intel WiFi Link 5300 (802.11 a/g/n) Half Mini Card South Africa

    South Africa? lol :)
    Anyone know what that means?

I don't believe so, as I should be getting vista and I'll have to mail in for windows 7. I'm calling today to see where my order is at, big company or small, a month is almost borderline insanity for build time.

I'm wondering what they've got to tell as well..
Do you happen to live in Western Europe? Our laptops might be produced and transported in the same batch

Ok so I sat on the phone and found out my order has now been delayed as well    Even though on the website it doesn't reflect that, it still shows delivery for Oct. 21, the dell rep says it will now look like Oct. 28th. Now the part that really pisses me off, I was never told anything about "Estimated" order time. I was told "I will recieve my new PC on or before Oct. 21". The dell rep says that's wrong, ok fine whatever I understand that they can't change what was said. So escalating to a "suprivisor" now I ask what can be done? I'm spending $1200 bucks on their product and leaving on vacation with no PC now :( ... The suprivisor says I can continue to wait and hope that it doesn't get delayed again, or I could cancel my order if I'm really that unhappy.... ?!?! I asked him about comping the shipping cost, or maybe a free case for my trouble. NOPE! Says he can't. What the hell kind of customer service is this?! I am a manager in a retail store, and I have to comp stuff all the time, just so the customer stays happy. It's really no loss to me as long as they are spending their primary money i.e. My $1200 computer. So now this is my question, do I go on vacation without my PC and just get it when I come back? Or do I go ahead and cancel the order and look at some other PC companies? In fact I would like a few suggestions as I want a sub $1200 gaming notebook and I thought that the studio 1557 was my best deal for the money but if somone has a better notebook in mind for around the same price please let me know, I'm almost itching to call dell and cancel now.

I asked the rep and suprivisor about this and Windows 7 since I'm delayed past lauch date and they had no clue... Me, I doubt it. according to them it's just begining production, what really pisses me off is they wouldn't let me change anything on the order after 2 days because it was "well into production". This was a month ago...

I too am in the waiting game boat. Ordered my 1557 on the 5th of October and am still at the second stage on the order status. It has been delayed twice now, first delivery date was the 19th, then the 22nd, and now it says the 26th.

I ordered from Dell Japan and I hear that they are assembled in Malaysia so once it gets to the "out for delivery" part I am hoping it won't take much time at all.

    I have only one question.

I hear that the 1557s lost the USB/eSATA combo port. Is this true? And if so why would the do away with eSATA?!

That sucks. I should still be able to add eSATA with an expresscard, correct?

I bought an esata enclosure for my old 2.5 hdd from the broken laptop I am replacing. It would be nice to have an access speed higher than USB!

    Hi Guys,

I am in the same boat :(

I ordered mine on the 27th September and was told delivery on the 14th, then the 16th, then the 19th and finally have been told that it will now be delivered late next week (23rd ish?) but they wouldn't give me a proper date.

Seriously, this is just not freaking good enough! I heard from somewhere that the delay maybe due to waiting for the i7 Core processor from Intel because of the demand... I don't really know?

Just a question, when I check my delivery status the website only says "Order received" with no "In production" or an ETA on their website. Is this normal? I have rung dell numourous times (Great service by the way *ends sarcasm*) but they said that's normal and your laptop IS "In production" - So why doesn't the website just tell me that?

Mine went to "In Production" then back to "Order Recieved" and is now back to "In Production". This happened when I received an email from them stating there would be a delay. The status didn't return to "In Production" after the email for at least 4 business days.

I have also heard that the demand for these i7's turned out to be a lot higher then they expected which is causing delays. I think I read that somewhere on the official Dell forums. But of course we will never hear anything straight from a Dell rep. And we will also never receive a "without a doubt" delivery date from them.

Just have to have patience. I expected this kind of wait when I ordered after reading the official forums some. I am typing this on a 9 year old Inspiron 2650 that is still working just fine. (My Macbook Pro died and I had to dig out my old Dell which is the main reason I chose to buy Dell again instead of Crapbook!)

They never said anything about not having the processor mine was because I got a design lid. But I'm sure they will tell me anything they want, how would I know any different? And mine has said production since day 2 after order an never changed.

I'm from New Zealand by the way - Would be interesting to see which part of the world gets their 1557 first.

I ordered the Midnight Blue, "Intelligent Blue" here in Japan, so I don't think it's the designer lids that are causing the delays. I just re-translated my email from Dell Japan. It says the delay is due to the availability of a part. Doesn't specify which part though.

As for eSATA I will probably just get something like this: http://www.vantecusa.com/front/product/view_detail/236 Kind of bulky so you can't really leave it in all the time but it will give me the speeds I want

On the phone now with Dell, seems my order has been fully canceled and I can't get a straight answer as to why?!
2 people tell me the 720p LCD is not in stock, so the rep tells me she can and will upgrade it to the 900 and give me next day shipping for the inconvenience at no charge. PROBLEM We get disconnected, now I'm on the phone again and the girl says she doesn't see that, and says she can change the order but now they have to charge?! I'm on hold right now to see what can be done, but this is absolutely the worst customer service I have ever experienced! I'll keep you guys updated.

[LIVE EDIT] - Seems they are trying to charge me again for another computer altogether.... I am about to lose it seriously....

[LIVE EDIT 2] - Been on the phone an hour and a half... I got back to the very orignal person I talked to, and still nothing other then you have to replace your entire order, what pisses me off is I was told that since I was being forced to re-order they would give me the 900p LCD and free next day shipping, angry but hey that sounded at least ok, I'm not paying any extra, well since I was disconnected and I only have the girls first name that told me that, they said they can't and that I must have misunderstood her?!?!?
Looks like I'm screwed, I'm about to just cancel altogether and just go with another company, this is waaaaay too much stress to order a stupid computer....

[LIVE EDIT 3] - Ok I'm back with the order modification dept. and I think they are going to honor what I was originally told an hour ago... She's trying to finalize the order now but seems to be having issues... Hopefully the next edit I can have some good news.

[FINAL EDIT!] GREAT SUCCESS!!! Finally I got a resolution and they upgraded my monitor to the 900p and free next day shipping, my new receive date is now 11/12/09....

Just spoken to Dell UK; here's what they have to say...

Nifkin's Initial Question/Comment: I hear there are delivery problems for i7 equipped laptops, is this the case?
15:18:34 System You are now being connected to an agent. Thank you for using Dell Chat
    15:18:34 System Connected with Pallavi_Arcot

15:18:39 Pallavi_Arcot: Thank you for contacting Dell Sales Chat. This is Pallavi, your Sales Advisor.
15:18:45 Pallavi_Arcot: Have you already processed the order?
15:19:13 Nifkin: No. But I was about to place an order
15:19:31 Nifkin: Which laptop are you buying?
15:19:41 Nifkin: But I have heard there are delays up to a month due to lack of supply of i7 processors
    15:19:46 Nifkin: Studio 15
    15:20:45 Pallavi_Arcot: yes
    15:20:58 Nifkin: yes what?!
15:21:28 Pallavi_Arcot: delays up to a month due to lack of supply
15:22:37 Nifkin: so if i were to place an order, for example, tomorrow, I wouldn't receive my laptop until aroung the 16 November?
15:20:45 Pallavi_Arcot: yes that is correct

So there you have it, folks! Guess this is what happens when there's still only one major manufacturer that's released laptops featuring i7 CPUs one month on from the processor's launch date!

    Niffy

Like I said though they have never once mentioned anything about the processor being the factor for my delay and eventual cancellation. They are saying the 720p monitor is what is delaying me....

Yeah, well they may have delays on the screens, but they definitely have delays on the processors

    More Dell B.S!

Check this out; a colleague of mine just had another chat with Dell via Live Chat...

15:49:15 Muhid Miah Initial Question/Comment: I have heard there are delays on shipping Dell Studio 1557 laptops, is this true?
15:49:36 System You are now being connected to an agent. Thank you for using Dell Chat
    15:49:36 System Connected with raghava_reddy_varala

15:49:41 raghava_reddy_varala: Thank you for contacting Dell sales chat. This is Raghav, your Sales Advisor. Please give me a moment while I review your query.
15:51:21 raghava_reddy_varala: Your Estimated Delivery Date is based on the time it takes for your payment to clear + the time your order takes in production + transit time, usually an estimated 7-10 business days.
15:53:25 Muhid Miah: Yes I understand how Dell usually estimate delivery times; that information is on your website. However, my question is more specific; I want to know if there is a problem and a delay shipping Studio 15 laptops with i7 processors? If this is the case, I would like a clear idea of how the estimated delivery schedule has been extended
15:54:16 raghava_reddy_varala: I am afraid , we do not have any information regarding this
15:54:33 raghava_reddy_varala: You can contact our customer care department and check the order status
15:54:39 raghava_reddy_varala: after you purchase the laptop
15:56:59 Muhid Miah: That is very interesting, as a colleague of mine spoke to a colleague of yours earlier on Live Chat, and was told that there were delays of up to a month on orders for i7-equipped Dell laptops. I simply wanted to confirm this, but this is clearly another case of Dell customer services making up information to tell prospective customers, and not being very honest. This doesn't look good from a customer service standards point of view does it Raghava?
15:58:02 Muhid Miah: Dell need to understand that customers will be happy to suffer delays, as long as the supplier is honest with them, and doesn't mess around, like Dell frequently do.
    15:58:21 raghava_reddy_varala: I understand your concern
15:58:41 raghava_reddy_varala: But it doesn't happen quite frequently
15:59:11 raghava_reddy_varala: Generally the Estimated delivery date would be 7-10 Business days
15:59:47 raghava_reddy_varala when would you like to purchase the laptop ?
16:02:34 Muhid Miah: As I have previously pointed out; that 7-10 days quote is the delivery guideline on your website, not the reality. If I just wanted information like that, I wouldn't bother speaking to you and I would just look at your website. Now, please do not try and sell me anything if you aren't prepared to give me a straight answer to my question, as my colleague received earlier; I'd rather purchase my new laptop from HP.
16:03:36 raghava_reddy_varala: It might take more than 7 - 10 Business days for the delivery
16:03:45 Muhid Miah: Aaaah, I see!
16:03:51 raghava_reddy_varala: I can not give you a confirmation regarding the delivery date
16:04:21 Muhid Miah: OK fair enough. Can I fill out you customer satisfaction survey now please?
16:04:46 raghava_reddy_varala: You can contact our customer care department
    16:04:56 raghava_reddy_varala: Please call 0844 444 4712 and leave your feed back
16:05:05 Muhid Miah: hahaha ok. have a great day!
    16:05:13 raghava_reddy_varala: you too
16:05:18 raghava_reddy_varala: Thank you for contacting Dell Sales Chat and allowing me the opportunity to assist you. Have a wonderful Day ahead.
16:06:49 System The session has ended!

    LOL :D :D :D

ROFL, that's funny! Sounds like what I just went through for the last hour and a half! Nobody ever seems to know anything, I got my confirmation again, but now the terms are different and I don't see that I have 0 intrest for the year... So I went straight to the original sales rep as I still have his extension and he is going to be calling me back. I would highly recommend anyone with issues to contact the original sales rep (you can find their extension # in the confirmation email) you spoke to, he seems to be much more willing to help me (at least he sounded like it, we'll see when he calls me back).

While we all seem to be sitting around waiting for the things to arrive, has anybody actually gotten a 1557 with i7 yet? What kind of battery lives are we supposed to expect from one of these boxes?

    My build is...

    Studio 1557 : Intel i7-720QM(1.6GHz) Mobile CPU
Display : 15.6 Widescreen Full High Definition (1920X1080) WLED with TrueLife
    Memory : 4096MB (2x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
    Hard Drive : 500GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
Graphics : 512 MB ATI Mobility Radeon HP 4570
    Battery : Primary 9-cell 85W/HR LI-ION
Wireless : Europe Dell Bluetooth 365 Card
Wireless : Dell Wireless 1397 (802.11 b/g) Mini Card European

I imagine the big graphics and i7 chip chew through a fair bit of juice,.. I just read that the i7 alone uses 45 watts an hour, at least while being used heavily, and read somewhere else that it bottoms out around 25 watt. Does this mean that I can expect to be lucky to get even 2 hours life while the battery is new and at its best?

I had been hopeful that the battery life might have been nearer the 5 hours or so I had seen reported around for the 1555...

"Watts per hour" does not exist; a watt is a rate on its own, equal to amps times volts, which is to say current (coulombs/sec) x potential difference (volts). Sorry, I get way too into the details of physics. :p

Anyway, the 45W rating is peak usage; normal use will be significantly lower, although I'm not sure how accurate that 25W figure is. Where did you read that?

For the record, plenty of previous generation Core 2 Duos and Quads (X-series and Q-series, respectively) used 45W peak as well, and the majority of C2Ds (T-series) drew 35W peak, and some of the more efficient one (P-series) drew 25W. Then there's the ultra-low voltage series, which I won't get into.

Can you tell me what monitor you ordered, after everything said and done it was actually my LCD (720p) that is not in stock and delaying my order. Lucky after much pain I was able to get them to give me the upgrade to the 900p free, which in all honesty was the only thing that I was regretting I didn't get on my orignal order... So now I'm delayed again, but for a better monitor and $10 cheaper I can't complain...much ;)
