    MasterShroom got me to change my mind from 900p to 700p for the Studio 1555 laptop I'm getting. Eventually my mind told me "900p! 900p!". So I made this thread.

    Please post a screenshot (print+screen) of your desktop if you have both:

    1. Dell Studio 1555, and
    2. 720p, 900p, 1080p screen

    Please state which screen it is (720, 900, or 1080) and if you want, let us know how you like it. Thanks!!!!

    P.S. I want a screenie of your desktop because I want to see the size of the icons.

    P.P.S.

    [IMG]

    This key is print screen. It copies an image of your current screen.

    F11. F12, Print Screen, Scroll Lock, Pause Break (most cp's have this configuration)

    Heres my screenshot. I have the 1080p screen. The hardware ID shows you which brand. I would like to say I love the screen. I wasn't used to it at first because of the small size of everything, but adapted quickly and now I love it.

    For this purpose a screenshot is not useful, the icons on the desktop can be easily changed in size without quality loss...
    Look at my screenshots to understand what i mean :p

    mmm... i heart high rez screens... luckly for me... Delll upgraded me from the 900p to 1080p screen...

    I would go with 900p.... honestly once you've used a high rez screen... you will never want to go back. So versatile.

    Hi Stabilo7, how do you mean? You just commented on how versatile your 1080p screen is yet you recommended the 900p? I'm not following... :(

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    I too am in a similar situation... can't decide between the 900p and 1080p screen. More screenshots will be appreciated. Unlike the original poster I'm not too concerned about the desktop and taskbar icons etc coz they can be taken care of by changing the dpi but the programs which are not compatible with this feature. For example, how small will the menu text sizes be (file, edit, view etc and submenus) in 3rd party programs like itune/mediamonkey, utorrent, acdsee/photoshop etc where the change of dpi may not have any effect on?

    I'd be grateful if someone would post some screenshots with these launched. Thank you in advance. ;)

    Oh... how does windows live mail or windows calendar look? I use them all the time.

    Okay heres a comparison in DPI settings on the 1080p display.
    I did an itunes comparison but forgot the original request was about the File menu texts, sorry I forgot to take screenshots of those. As you can see its quite late for me so I'll do that tomorrow morning if someone hadn't already. Reason is I have to restart the machine to apply the settings -_-

    Anyways, here are he screenies.

    Itunes 96 DPI

    Itunes 120 DPI

    Desktop with multiple windows comparison. As you can see the window sizes did not change but the DPI changes

    96 DPI

    120 DPI

    Hi all,

    Instead of posting full size images on here, could you just put thumbnails which link to the full size image. Just that full size posts of your desktop makes the rest of the thread a real pain to read.

    Regards

    I guess I should state that I dont have my computer... I currently am using a WSXGA+ screen... High rez screens offer you so much space to work with... so really i can't see 900p ot 1080p being a bad choice (either one)... they will be way better than 720p. (as far as how much room and all)

    Great screenshots Streetmagus! and thank you for your explainations. Itune is obviously compatible with the dpi change which is great. Could you check if Windows Calender, Photoshop/Acdsee, Nero, utorrent, Skype and Messenger(these are the programs I use regularly + MS Outlook, Word and Excel) will respond to the dpi change as well? I assume all the MS programs will. If you don't use any of the above, let us know what others work/not work?

    Thank you so much!

    Oh on more question, I'm still using Windows Xp at the moment and there is a custom dpi settings so one could choose e.g. 110dpi as opposed to 96 or 120dpi. From what I can see, personally, I think that the 1080p with 96dpi might be a bit too small to adjust to straight away but the 120dpi is too big. If custom setting is possible(on Vista and perhaps Windows 7 if anyone can confirm?) I might set it to say 110dpi for a couple of weeks first so my eyes can adjust then change it back down to 96dpi to utilize the BEAUTIFUL FULL HD panel.

    p.s. Screenshots comparison will not be necessary for the above, just whether they are compatible with the dpi change.

    I believe photoshop has issues with changes in DPI. I know, sounds ridiculous considering it's a graphics package.....

    Confirmed. Vista does support this custom DPI setting. I assume Windows 7 does aswell, I don't see why not.

    Supposedly the 720p has the worst color balance, brightness, and viewing angles of the three options. It doesn't look bad to me, but then again I'm not spoiled by being used to the 900p or 1080p.

    I followed Mastershroom advices and took the 1080p. The quality is unbelievable. There is a configuration movie that comes with Windows Media Center and it's 1080p and man, I felt like I was in the movie.

    I do have a problem with my LCD screen, but as I said in many threads, I may be really unlucky and isolated.

    Very true about the gaming comment. I have a SDTV and it is very difficult to read the text on some games. One of the worst: BF 1943.

    I should have stayed with the 1080p option... :( Apparently I was taken aback by a comment that its an over-do for a 15.6in laptop and makes all other things too small... so I took the 900p instead :(

    I ordered mine just the other night and is now 'IN PRODUCTION'

    I'm sure I read in another thread that somebody was in a similar situation and he called Dell up and got it cancelled and changed. Have you tried speaking to them? The problem is, you probably have to wait a week or two longer... :(

    if I were to get a 1080p screen but wanted to optimize some games and run at 1440x900 would it looked stretched out and bad? If so I may just roll 900p. Opinions?

    If you're running in on full screen then it'll be stretched, otherwise in window mode then no. Is there any reason why you want to run it in 1440x900 instead of 1600x900? The 4570 is pretty capable except for demanding titles like Crysis. Otherwise, on high resolutions, just turn down the other settings a little, most games should be quite playable.

    Just out of interest, what are you playing?

    I'm more than happy with my 720p display (AUO20EC). Seems just right for a 15.6 inch notebook. 900p wasn't available in the uk and 1080p not worth the extra money.

    I wonder if all the UK units come the AU panels, apparently, from what I read, they are the good ones. It's the Samsung screens that are less than satisfactory.

    Then again, I do not have any personal experiment on this, just what I read.

    My Samsung 720p (SEC5441) is just fine. I don't have any supposedly superior displays to compare it to, but I don't seem to have the allegedly common issues of blues appearing purple, terrible viewing angles, etc.

    Its probably because not all of them are bad. Maybe Samsung produces more lemons than the other brands. I thought I read somewhere the AUO panel also had the purple issue.

    Well I worry games like Fallout 3, CoD5 and the new MW2 may have to be turned down to Lows for native 1080P res. I'd rather go x900 if I could have meds than all lows. Also I play WoW, testing out warhammer online, and soon Aion which uses the cryengine (Far Cry 1). I'm sure WoW can play 1080p easily but some of the FPS's I enjoy I don't want to lose too much graphics. My original build I'm thinking has the T6500 2.1ghz and 4570 256MB ram and 900p.
    If I were to only upgrade two of the three and I'm config this laptop w/ budget gaming in mind.. which would you recommend? Processor/512mb gfx/1080p screen?

    details.. T6500--> T6600 $50 or --> P8600 $125
    256mb --> 512MB 4570 $50
    or 900p --> 1080p $25

    in terms of gaming a faster processor rated at 2.4 1066fsb a big leap over a 512mb gfx card w/ a slow bus?
