Hi, I just bought a Dell studio 1555 with LED backlight. I love it at the beginning but I noticed there is a problem of the display. When the bright level was lower than 6 out of 10, I cane see something like light pulses (this is the best word I can describe with  ) running from bottom to top on the whole screen especially when the lid is wide open to around 120 degree. It’s not noticeable with white background but is obvious in most color background.

Initially, I thought it’s duo to low refresh frequency and I checked the setting which is 60Hz at 1366X768. My friend has a studio 17 bought from last year and it does not have this issue at all at 60Hz refresh frequency. My laptop has integrated Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD with maximum 1366X768. Anyone knows what might be the problem or it's a defect?? Thanks!!

Hmm, Has it always done this or is this something new? Sounds like a defect if you ask me...

Hi, Thanks for the reply! I got it for two days. And it always looks like this. Initially, I thought it's due to LED backlight (though it sounds silly to think about that ). But I did not find anything saying that way.

I ordered one of these on tuesday 20th oct 09 was delivered on 21st went back to CPW on the 22nd for the exact reason above panel abnormalities eg the pulsating band at top of screen.

It has made no difference co's the 1555 they swapped this for does exactly the same.

Tried new gfx driver, new bios, went looking for a panel driver but got sidetracked with trying to return to CPW as they are useless .. Could not even arrange a courier to pick up a 1 day old faulty laptop and do a swap out had to get a mate to give me a lift 20 miles to one of their stores to pickup a replacement as the 2 shops within 5 miles of me don't stock that model. (see hassle) so still got that to try however I need to find a colour profile/driver that will help not hinder.

Anyways I am unsure as to why it does this ,led cheapness, interference, wrong video refresh rate even though it shows 60hz , would help if some options were not locked out to user for various gfx card issues.

My next move . Normally it would be Refund and stay clear of DELL, rumors say dell to retailers machines poor quality build over their own Dell built machines , a few reviewers also share that opinion by saying the 1555 they got from pc world was grainy were as the panel direct from dell was stunning.

I bought htis laptop for a mate who wanted one , he seems happy enough with screen but me I want to take it back again maybe refund get another manufacturers lappy but he says he is more than happy with it. However it was paid for on my cc card and if the pulsating problem becomes more widespread and was an early indicator of more panel problems I'm the one with hassle after he is no longer happy with it under the warranty. Actually I think I have been more than fair and it will be his problem to contact dell and organise a repair replacement as I have told him he should really get this one replaced but he is happy so his decision.

Hopefully dell can fix it with a bios/driver update. Not holding out much hope though.
