I performed an W7 upgrade to this laptop from Vista and now it no longer boots.

Dell are sending me a new hard drive but Im not sure why since the HDD tests are all successful.

    Any ideas?

Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?

And, one more question - Did it ever boot after the Win 7 Upgrade? If it didn't, maybe a re-install will fix it...

Performed the upgrade from Vista all went smoothly worked fine for a few days then started locking up.

I attempted the System restore, repair, and reinstall booting from the OS DVD with no luck ... all lock up at the same stage at the starting windows banner.

Only works in safe mode... I did a scan on the Samsung HM500JI 500G HDD with the samsung etools utility and it comes up clean everytime.

At wits end here. I have a $1300 paper weight.

Sounds like a bad driver to me, you might want to try reinstalling those starting with the video drivers.

If I were you I'd cash in on your warranty if you still have it. My 1555 started doing that last week, and it hasn't even been able to turn on since.

Laptop is only a month old so warranty not an issue.

Ive also tried to install XP it does make a lot more progress but never makes it past the "installing devices" screen.

I will try and install XP from USB to see if it is a fault with the optical drive. Otherwise I will get Dell in to replace all the components.

Yes I can. Its just you that cant. :p

Back to the topic. Dell have replace my HDD. Original was a samsung, new one is a WD. Tomorrow they are going to replace optical drive, memory and motherboard.

Anyway XP refuses to install also. However the system boots any of the iso boot linux and FreeDos CD's without a problem. Ive run every diagnostic test under the sun and they run fine. mystery.

Dell have replaced all the component in my laptop except the screen, case and keyboard and it is now working again.

My original Samsung 500JI has been replaced with a WD 5000 BEVT.

I still have the original Samsung and have 2 weeks to return it.

which is the better drive - should I swap them?
will Dell ever notice if I dont return the drive :)

I'd stick with the WD drive personally. Yes Dell will notice if you don't return it, and they'll charge you full retail price for the second drive if you don't. Never mind the fact that it's morally wrong to try to get away with such a thing.

Definitely keep the WD. The one they sent you is the WD Scorpio Black Series. I personally won't use a Hard Drive UNLESS it's WD.
As Fragile suggested, you should return the Samsung. It's not worth the hassle.
