I think its a little excessive but here is the one 1555 LED screen ( Dell does not have OLED so there is no distinction needed, if its LED its Backlit LED)

W385J Module, Liquid Crystal Display 15.6HDF, Light Emitting Diode True Life, Lg Philips Lcd, Intel 4500MHD

When I said I tested it, I did all the different plain backgrounds, white, black, gray and a few others............ I have over 30 years experience building and testing systems.
My days started with TRS 80 and My first windows was 3.0 since I would program DOS before that.

The second one here I will get to later and post the other rig, its a 900p with a ATI 256mb card.

My parents decided to get studios last month and I decided to get mine this month should be here Tomorrow, all 1555's

I find it a little odd on these forums at times like if a few claim to have a problem then we all must have a problem, its everything the manufacturer makes, honestly I stopped participating here because I have been apart of large operations where thousands of Dell laptops were being used and we did not experience the level of problems that some of the posters here tend to have. I'm not saying people are not having problems but I think at times the threads go too far to assume that the problem is wide spread.

There are two studios here 1555's different LED ( BTW all studio 1555 are sold with LED backlit screens now) screens and video cards and both do not have the flicker problem. I have third ( mine) coming and I will report. If I do not have the problem (I hope I do not ) then that is 3 in this house.

If we have to have a certain post count to be believed or something then I was right to stay away and maybe I should?

The problem as always is that people are all too eager to raise their voices when problems happen, but if nothing was wrong with their machine, they keep quiet.

Believe me if these studios had a flicker problem I would say so, we paid for them out of pocket. I will be looking for it over the coming weeks and more than happy to change the report, but at this time they are perfect.

You also have to question Dell? If the LED backlight was such a problem why would Dell go to all Led for the studio's? These screens must be used in other manufacturer's notebooks since there are only a few who even make these screens, so I have to wonder is it a Dell problem or that the consumer's are not used to the new technology yet in some cases?

These screens are the best I have seen by far in a while.

@DRFP , your statements make sense.
The strange thing about my problem is that Dell has told me that "the screen has to work in this way".
I have not thought about all the guys could (or should) have this problems but having experienced this dell' s support reaction I have thought which giving a warning should be useful.
+ There is an interesting discussion about other guys with similar problems which seems Dell is not able/don't bare to solve.
    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19263299.aspx
So my post sounds like: "let's pay attention in order to react quickly"

Another reason for my post is to inspect if the problem is related to particular panel/hardware configuration.
For example you have installed an LG-Philips's panel, I have a different one by Optronic.
This could be an important detail when (in case) a supervisor 'll call me (I'm keeping with complains) .

I have seens dozens of screens, led'ones and old ones, never seen blinking or flickering. This is not about consumer's fault, I have luckily the chance to work as programmer and I can see lots of LCD screens all the days.

I also think that based on where they are assembled or based at stock's availability, dell installs different screens. There is no wonder about finding defective lots when production is huge.

My dell studio 1555 came last night, I reinstalled Windows 7 on it with Vista drivers, I tried the windows 7 driver for the video 4500MHD but it did not work right, the Vista 64bit driver works perfect.

W385J Module, Liquid Crystal Display 15.6HDF, Light Emitting Diode True Life, Lg Philips Lcd

    720p screen.

No flicker as tested last night........ so far its perfect.

This is a stock 1555 250gb hd and 3gb ram nothing extra

My mom has the same screen 720p 4500MHD
My Dad has the 900p screen and Ati 256 card

non of us have the flicker problem

    I'm running 7 ultimate
they are running Vista Home premium

I think this is the case, OK if the screens are defective yes its a problem with Dell quality control but since only about 3 manufactures even make these screens at this time I think its the manufacture of the screens problem as well, when consumers point the finger to one Company I just get think about how misguided it is, its not just Dell.

If these screens have problems then other laptops will have it too.

Yes there is nothing strange about defective hardware but the real issue is about Italian Dell's support, and the supervisor has not called me yet. (I have a bad feeling). ;)
I'll update this thread as far as there are news.
P.s: There could also be a problem with a particular card video/motherboard - panel interaction.
Perhaps dell's motherboard with ati 4570 and Optronic's panel combiation triggers the problem. But these are speculations.

I agree it seems to be in certain areas that there is a problem.

    Let us know.

But is not all support in India?

My update on the screen flicker issue. After writing a 4 pages letter of complaint sent to Dell headquarters, I got a phone call from a supervisor who got me in touch with a competent technician. He ran some test (with remote control) and acknowledged that the problem wasn't fixable by software.

He called me 2 days later to tell me that Dell engineering indeed found that there was a voltage matching problem and offered me a brand new Studio 1555 for replacement.

I received it friday and the flicker is gone. No more problems. My old screen was a AU something, the new one is a LG. On the Dell community thread I posted earlier, many people have been offered the same kind of compensation from Dell, a new replacement and the problem is fixed for them too. Hope this helps people.

Thanks DownTif, I'm happy to see you have successfully solved your issue, could you report this success to the dell's forum thread too?
    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19263299.aspx?PageIndex=7
It could be useful in case I get in touch with a real supervisor the next week.

From what I get from all this, the Lg panels are the best and do not suffer the flicker problem as the other panels. It may still but many like me report they do not have the problem.

    So its a hardware issue.

    Update:

    The problem has been solved!!

I have finally have a contact with a supervisor who sent a new technician with a new mobo and an LG7001 LCD panel.

And finally.... the problem was still there! Still flickering!!

    hypothesis:

1)All the refurbished components around in the support's network are affected by this issue

2)The broken pieces are able to pass quality control because it is a problem related to hardware interaction and they are hopefully able to work alone.

3)The broken pieces keep jumping from a customer to another ..

I have concluded there is no way to solve this issue thru Dell's support , I have taken proofs of Dell's faults (my bills and support's checks) and I have gone to the Vendor.

I have explained the inability of Dell in fixing my notebook and I have pointed what my European vendor warranty states about.

Mediaworld (Mediamarket) has understood the problem and changed my product with another one.

In conclusion , my dell is working fine at the moment, best than expected, but the writing and the model have changed in something similar to Asus k50in.

Italian's Dell support has disappointed me for the last time.

    Regards

1)Ask for dell's replacement, do not ask for a technician to fix it.
2)In case you cannot obtain a replacement ask dell for a total refund.

    Hello everybody,

after an extensive search I decided to buy a the Dell Studio 1555, at the moment you can get substantial discounts on the Dell notebooks. A Studio 1555 with T4300+4GB+500HDD+FULL HD for only 640 Euros! But after reading this thread made me sceptical and deter me from buying a Dell. Maybe the Lenovo R500 could be the better choice? So what do you think about the Dell Studio 1555 with all the failures like display flicking, spongy keybord and heat? Can you recommend me the Dell notebook?

    Greetings,

    Björn

There are lot of guys with perfectly working dell 1555.
My opinion is not about the product in general but about dell's support.
The problem is about dell's support having different quality related to your country, so it depends on where you live and I have the impression that dell's support is not so well organized about solving particular problems.
This is the reason I suggest total replacement and not tech onsite support.

My IMHO opinion is that there is something wrong when Italian support have to fix the dell's 1555 problems.

I have no opinion about Lenovo, I have never seen one.

My backlit keyboard on my 1555 is not spongy. The laptop is not hot-running (although I keep it on a cooler at home, just to make it last longer), and I have not had any problems with the screen-it works and looks much better than my desktop LCD monitor at work. The only time I see flicker is on certain web images where the adjacent pixels are different colors (which I seems expected for an LCD).

My suggestion is: "let's ask for laptop replacement"
On site support is not able to solve the issue, this is my direct experience.
In case replacement is not possible let's ask for refund.

My cousin bought Dell 1555 Studio as well few months back. He is having the same screen flickering issues. The most strange thing is that he can't even use the Service Tag, even with Auto finder, it doesn't detect the Tag.

Why would Dell make these types of rubbish laptops? It's out of my understandings.

Anyone who can find the solution to this issue please report it here.

    Regards

    J
