Since they don't ship this laptop with a backlit keyboard over here, i'm about to get a replacement part from eBay so i can replace it by myself.
So i did some browsing - and found out that for a US/International Keyboard replacement part the part#KR766
After searching on eBay it shows up a >
Dell Studio 1535 1536 1537 Backlt Laptop Keyboard KR766
>
Since it doesn't explicit show the Dell Studio 1555 im not entirely sure if this part fits on the Dell Studio 1555
Could anyone give me some confirmation whether it's the right part im about to order?
Thanks in advance

It's the same part number, so you're good to go. -

According to this thread - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=389766&page=2
1535 - 1537 backlit keyboards are different to the ones that would come with the 1555, correct me if i have read it wrong.
Also, the 1555 has moved the touch sensitive buttons onto the fn keys, which would not come with a 1535 - 1537 keyboard. -
Gah this is getting me confused, gonna try it in a the US Delll chat, is that trustworthy?
-
The 1555 keyboard part is different from the 1535, 1537, etc.
An entirely new keyboard part is used for the 14z and new 15 and features physical media buttons on the Fkeys. -
Any idea where one can buy that part? I'm getting a 1555 to replace my defective 1535, but Dell is not giving me a backlit keyboard, and I really desire one.
-
I would also be interested in an aftermarket upgrade backlit keyboard for the 14z if anyone knows where they might be available.
-
You guys are gonna have to wait at least 1 -2 months for these parts to come back in stock becuase these computers are considered new.

I certainly will.
-
Hey Aryq...the backlit keyboard won't work in my 1555, which just arrived today. Looks like the 1535-1537 backlit keyboard is now available.
-
If you can, take a photo of the keyboard and e-mail me the details -- and we'll go from there!
Ciao!

So far, so good.
Good news, I just talked to a Dell rep who set up a part order for me! I have a 1555 backlit keyboard on the way, straight from Dell, at my own expense. The part number in the invoice is C569K.
The rep gave me permission to post his email here: it's Fabio_Mejia[at]dell.com. He says if there's a part you want to order, he just needs your Service Tag and customer number or case number. He can help you find these numbers if you don't know.
He will reply with a Quote number, and direct you to a website where you input the quote number and your customer number, and you can order your part from there, choose shipping, etc. I never knew they had this system until now.
So dynames and Quaid, you guys can get your backlit keyboards for your 1555 and 14z this way.
Anyway, Aryq...here's two shots of the keyboard, still in the 1535. It's broad daylight now, so I can't really show the lights now. It's the standard 86-key US layout, with the Euro sign on the 5 key, although you still need to set the key layout to US-International in Windows in order to use the Euro symbol.
-
Shroom: Thanks for the photos. I dropped you a private message here on the forums.
Thx!

Thanks for the information on ordering a replacement keyboard. I have contacted Fabio.

Glad to be helpful. Let us know how it goes!

I've noticed you can not get any Studio 17 with Backlit Keyboard...UNLESS you get the top dollar system with the i7 Quad Processor. The minimum you'll spend for that system is $1,249 bucks.
-
-
Yeah, it looks like they phasing them all out for the Quad Core. However, it's a shame they're boxing customers in who want the Backlit Keyboard.
I was talking to one Dell Technician last week who actually said this to me::... "We've discontinued offering the BluRay Burner with those systems because we've had some issues with the Core 2 processor and BluRay Burners." LoL!! I said... "Well, I've never heard of a particular processor conflicting with the performance of a DVD Burner. How are Core 2's affecting the performance of BluRay Burners? Makes no sense to me. He then said it makes no sense to him either, and began taking me on a Loop about them just changing configurations. Also, he mentioned that holiday sales are over now.
Is there that much of a performance difference between the T9600 and i7?? I'm just wondering if Dell will try to say Core 2's are affecting the Backlit keyboard as well. I don't think the guy knew what he was talking about. -
I mean in reality the majority of people don't even fully utilise their Core 2 Duos, let alone needing 4 cores with hyper threading.
However, if you are doing some serious multi-tasking, or are using applications that can actually use more than two cores; then the benefits are most definitely there to be had. -
Unfortunately, Fabio was unable to help me with my order as I live outside the US. I'll have to contact somebody within Dell Europe.

I've just had an interesting conversation with Dell regarding a keyboard. Well, my wife has.
They called regarding a different matter - a technician is coming out tomorow to fix a problem with my webcam. At the same time, the Dell agent responded to my query about a backlit keyboard. They offered to fit one at the same time, for £99 (give or take a few pence).
My wife didn't know what to agree to, so asked for a call back while she contacted me (at work).
I've been checking ebay, etc and there are keyboards available from £18 to £40. But I have no idea if they're genuine Dell keyboards, or 3rd party copies. I suspect the latter.
I'd pretty much given myself a budget of £45 for the replacement, so asked my wife to negotiate for a discount. Using the fact they've been out to our house 3 times in the last week and we'd like a 'good-will' gesture. I'd be willing to push it to £50 as I'd be getting a Dell keyboard, fitted by Dell, which should prevent any issues regarding warranties, etc.
Dell offered to do it for £80ish.
Wife said no.
Dell asked how much?
Wife responded, £40?
Dell said they'd check with their supervisor and call back. They came back with £50.
My wife agreed.
Dell then said, so that will be £57 in total!
They had been quoting my wife prices inc. VAT initially, but then switched to exc. VAT to make the price appear lower! Very underhand. My wife objected and stuck to her guns. The Dell agent went away, but came back with nothing better.
My wife objected some more. Laid it on thick about the other problems we'd been having, the number of visits to sort out one problem, the fact it was Christmas , and that £50 inc. VAT would close the deal.
Dell said no.
So endeth the conversation.
I don't really know if £57 fitted is a reasonable price. I think it might be. But when you set a budget, you really have to stick to it. Part of me is wondering if they'll call back to renegotiate. Then the other part slaps me saying, 'Get real! This is Dell we're talking about.' -
I think this depends largely on the operator - they upgraded my display for cost price when they were coming out to replace it anyway - so I paid £27 for an upgrade which cost (at the time) over £100 on the website.
Does sound like they were being a little unreasonable - you could always try another operator. -
100 ANYTHING (well, except Yen ) is just ridiculous for a backlit keyboard.
And the ones on eBay are going to be the real thing...I can't imagine anyone would really want to make knockoff laptop keyboards; that's not exactly a very profitably market. -
I found this thread in a google search. I can't order it from Dell (see my new thread "A Dell Outlet Story")
Anyway, I found a couple of suppliers online by doing another search using part you got from Dell.
If they say it is part number C569k I am good to go right? There aren't diferent versions of the 1555 keyboard correct? -
is this the C569K backlit keyboard for Studio 1555?

There are technically different versions of the 1555 backlit keyboard, but these are only for different languages/layouts. For instance, there's the US Standard layout (which is the one in that photo), UK layout, and others. -

Can anyone post step by step instructions to remove regular keyboard and install backlit keyboard in Studio 1555. I think you can download instructions from Dell support but I don't have a service tag yet (pick up my 1555 next week) -
Sure thing.
First, make sure that the notebook is completely powered off, unplugged, and remove the battery. Then, inside the battery bay, there should be one single small Philips head screw. Remove this and put it aside somewhere you can keep track of it; these screws are tiny and easy to lose.
Open up the notebook as far as it will open, and remove the plastic speaker grille/keyboard bezel (it doesn't look like it, but they're actually one single connected piece of plastic). Start from the back edge, behind the speakers, and work your way down the sides and front. Then, you should see two of those small Philips head screws on the upper edge of the keyboard. Remove those, and pull the keyboard up (towards the speakers) until the two tabs at the bottom are out of the slots that cover them.
Pull the keyboard out towards you. You'll have to bend it slightly to get it out of the tabs at the sides. Then, flip it upside down, and lift the black plastic tab anchoring the ribbon cable in place. Remove the cable, and the keyboard is free.
To put the new one in, pretty much do the same thing in reverse order, except there is one extra smaller ribbon cable to connect, to power the backlights. It should be fairly obvious where it connects. Once you've connected the cables, make sure to fold down the plastic tabs to anchor them in place, and put the keyboard back in place, secure the screws, replace the keyboard bezel/speaker grill, and replace the screw from the battery bay.
You don't need to install any drivers or anything, but you will need Dell's Quickset software if you want to adjust how long the backlight should stay on without any keypresses (default is 30 seconds, I set it to Always On). -
Thank you very much!

Any time.
Do come back and let us know how everything goes. -
came across this posting when i googled for dell studio 1555 backlit keyboard, looking to replace my non backlit. I found a studio 1555 backlit keyboard on ebay, the seller states that its condition is "new, genuine" but one confusing thing thats listed on the items page is
* Unless described as 'Original'; all items are produced by a 3rd party manufacturer and not the original manufacturer. Original manufacturer part numbers are provided for cross reference only, the actual part numbers on the product will be different.
so i emailed him to see if its a dell original keyboard, here is a link if anyone else is looking for a 1555 backlit keyboard.

It reads to me as he's stating he's a 'Genuine US Seller' and that his keyboards are new, but not genuine Dell items, i.e. they're 3rd party, 'Made in China', alternatives.
There's nothing wrong with that per se, but if you want a genuine item, say you're worried about compatibility, or a warranty, then you'd have to look elsewhere. -
-
Not a bad price at all. Consider Dell UK were initially asking me for the equivalent of ~ $160!
-
is it not possible that Dell buys these keyboards from China?
I ordered from these guys as they are based in Texas and I needed to be sure it got to El paso by a certain date. They shipped same day I ordered.
http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=6462
I found another seller in California, but they had only one choice of shipping and did not answer their phone. They do have a good price.
http://www.sunvalleyus.com/DellKeyboard/Dell-OC569K-Keyboard.html -
I think it's entirely probable that they are all made in China. Maybe even from the same factory. But there is a chance they're copies, from different factories, with different (lower) quality control. There's no way to know, unless you can directly compare, or go by user review.

Followed your instructions (thanks again) and keyboard works great. Trickiest part was lifting the the bezel, used a knife to loosen it up in the back.
Thanks again for the help!! -
