    Hi,

is it normal for a the fan on a studio 1537 to ramp up every 5 minutes or so? It doesn't go to full speed but its cleary audible and a little annoying. When it happens when I'm just browsing the web etc so nothing is being taxed.

Its about a month old and I have had the fan replaced but didn't really make a difference. Is the controller part of the fan assembly? Is there something else I need to get replaced? or is this the case of the laptop jsut trying to keep optimal temperature?

My work laptop (hp) is silent compared to the studio 1537

    Any suggestions would be great

Not sure what to suggest mate.

What power plan have you go it on? I keep mine on balanced most of the time and it only gets noisy when im doing my music production stuff.

I think I'm on the 'dell recommended' power plan. Am I right in thinking I should be able to surf the web/read mail without the fan kicking in every 5 minutes?

Also Gazza, noticed you have a s2909W (I have the same) - do you run hdmi out from your studio to the monitor?

I run a HDMI - DVI cable for my laptop, and I use the HDMI for my Xbox360

The fan shouldnt kick in that frequently for normal use - on mine on balanced plan the fan comes on a little every 20 mins or so just to keep the temps under control, its goes off again after a few minutes.

Thanks Gazza, I'll try the balanced power plan and see if it makes a difference

If you are using the hdmi port your using more of gpu memory thus causing to make it hotter.

That's the problem. Try power saver, it fixed the problem for me.

Interesting ... I am using a HDMI to DVI cable to an external monitor and the fan runs every 2-3 minutes.
Does running VGA connection make a significant difference on the reported CPU and GPU temps?

Keep in mind that unless you're all operating under the same ambient conditions your fans will act differently despite having the exact same laptop and internals.
Along those same lines, a 2.5ghz c2d will bring the fan on more often then a 2.3 which would more often then a 2.0 and so on.

Ramping up every five minutes doesn't sound out of place to me, but admittedly mine has a desktop p4 and the fans never turn off :p

Ah thanks for that...I wondered if using the hdmi might be adding to the load

I can confirm that the programme mentioned works with Studio 1537, so it might be worth trying for those having fan/heat issues with this laptop.
