Been wondering... Does anyone know if the Santa Rosa Studios can have more than 4GB of ram and use all of it? Anyone tried to put 2GB + 4GB or 4GB + 4GB or 4GB + 2GB in their Studio 1535 or 1735?

I know the Montevina Studios (1537 and 1737) should support more than 4GB.

The Santa Rosa platform, I believe, tops out at 4GB.

As far as I know 8gb won't work on Santa Rosa's.

That being said - I've heard that people have been successful with upgrading to 6gb (1x4gb and 1x2gb sodimm's)...

    newegg.com currently has a deal for 2x4gb SoDIMM's for $299.00 right now - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231210

might be tempting to split the cost between 2 laptops - and upgrade them both to 6gb

It varies with the chipset. Some workstation machines designed by HP (HP 8710w for example) and Dell's Precision M6300, both having with Santa Rosa platforms actually support up to 8GB RAM. And I do know there is one particular Compal Santa Rosa model that supports up to 8GB RAM.

For mine, I'm Dell Inspiron 1720 user (Not on available on Dell's site anymore), I should probably add to the list of people who have successfully broke the 4GB barrier even though the max support RAM for the 1720 is 4GB. I have currently 6GB (See my sig). So far, I haven't tried 8GB yet. newegg doesn't ship to Singapore, and buying another G.Skill 1x4GB stick would cost a bomb especially importing it here.

Not to mention there are a number of users in the Dell XPS forums that have their M1530's up to 6 - 8GB.

I couldn't put it in a more straight forward way; but for the Studio line, you'll have to try it out yourself to see if it works. Make sure you also update the BIOS to the latest version. I too would like to find out if it does. :) However I still can't guarantee if it really does.

Here's my thread testing the 1720 with 6GB RAM I have created sometime back.

Nice, I was just reading your thread and I didn't know you could go up as high on the RAM. Anyway I'm always a bit itchy when touching a Dell.

Yeah, on paper, everything tops out at 4GB. I was actually reading up on your thread SomeFormOFhuman and a few of those 1530s that went to 6GB before I thought about this for the Studio.
