Ordered a Dell Studio 15 laptop several days ago. As no option appeared on the online order regarding the keyboard I assumed a backlit one was a standard feature. Since found out it is not. I have had to phone dell, cancel the current order and re order the laptop with the backlit keyboard for an extra £15. I asked the salesperson why Dell does not include the option within the web ordering system but he was none the wiser either.
It’s just annoying my order has to start all over again :(

This is really odd, I assumed a backlit keyboard was standard on all studio 15's/17's.

Well in the UK at least in appears not to be. Got a feeling lots of people who have ordered it here assume the backlit keyboard to be standard. They will be disappointed and it will inevitably lead to returns. Dell has messed up here I fear.

only, do you find trolling amusing? Because, to be quite honest, you are beginning to irritate me.
You seem to have posted in half the topics on the first page of all the Dell forums, and have had nothing constructive or even accurate in what I have seen!
You seem to be under the impression that that banner in your signature gives you the right to troll, flame and generally mislead other forum users - users who have registered here to aid/find aid!

It is quite a shocker indeed, not really. I had a feeling Dell was going to pull something like this. Last time LED screens weren't even available for anybody outside the US. I guess you should be thankful that they are at least allowing you to pay for it rather than have it not be an option at all.

Keep in mind also, Europeans get better hard drives than the USA as well as processor options, and that is worth more than a illuminated keyboard.

Processor options and HDD levels are usually worth more, I agree, but on this occasion one of the things that attracted me to the Dell Studio was the illumined keyboard. I often sit in a darken room with many other sad people playing Counter Strike and Supreme Commander on massively spec’d desktops so it would be nice to have a laptop keyboard I could see while I surf the web or chat on msn while killing a terrorist. So on this occasion I would opt for a lesser CPU for the backlit keyboard.
Just wish Dell would make these options clear and uniformed across the board.

Dell has been losing money & market share for awhile and the lineup restructuring, backslide in options and standard warranty changes are part of its streamlining process. it's no surprise they'll start nickel and diming people for things like backlit keyboards.

Maybe so.....be you can only 'streamline' so much then people go elsewhere!

I agree. a lot of what made Dell attractive in the past isn't there anymore.

Ouch, that would annoy me. One of the reasons I like the Studio's is because of the backlit keyboard.

I noticed that their options don't always reflect what you order; this happened to me (except for me it was a good thing) when I ordered mine, I ordered it with the full hi-def screen (1920x1200) even though it was not WLED backlit (only the next resolution down was)... However, when I got my order confirmation it clearly stated that the screen had the expected resolution and was WLED backlit. We'll see what the truth is when it gets here...

Sorry to resurrect this... You HAVE to buy on the phone to get the backlit keyboard?

On the website I can save £100, I assume this would not be possible on the phone, hence I'm essentially paying £115 for the keyboard?

Would it be possible to order the spare part afterwards and then change it myself?

    Sheesh, poor UK people.

It's standard in North America. I checked my detailed list supplied by Dell and the Back-lit was including. So is the fingerprint reader.

P.S At least you aren't forced to order from Dell Poland. They charge 2.000$ for something you can get at 1200 in CA.

I made the mistake of assuming the backlit keyboard was standard. Although it would have been great, I'm still happy I caught the brief Staples sale. If I hadn't, I would be returning my Studio and ordering from Dell, where the backlit keyboard is standard.
