I have a problem with the LCD brightness...the LCD is very dim most the time (regardless of adapter or not)
Everytime I restart, the brightness is back to normal until window has finished loading, and then the brightness of the screen will suddenly dim alot and will continue to be dim until I restart again. I tried to edit this using power management but it does not work. I also tried to adjust the brightness by pressing Fn and up arrow but the brightness is already set to max. The problem is that the brightness is correct on boot up but does not sustain that brightness after loaded. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

Unfortunately you may just have a bad screen. I know my first Studio 15 it would not move from the lowest brightness level. I returned it and the replacement was just fine.

But surely if it can be bright at startup, then it should be able to maintain it through settings? :(

That's not always the case. You can call them and they will run you through diagnostics, but most likely they will need to send a tech to replace the screen.

Did you try adjusting the brightness in the ATI Catalyst Control Panel? It's normal that your screen's brightness is different before Windows finishes loading because your video card driver has not finished loading yet.

To adjust the brightness, just right click on the desktop and click Catalyst Control Center and then under the "Graphic Settings" adjust the "Color" submenu item. You can also adjust the screen's backlight in the bios.

    Me too!
Just got a Studio laptop with LED backlight. Brightness keys do nothing, ATI CCC has nothing to do with LED backlight. Dell live support updated the BIOS - no joy. Then they had me go into BIOS control and alter the video brightness settings; interesting, both AC and Battery settings defaulted to value of 5.5. So I changed AC default to 16 and Battery default to 10. But brightness remained dim, as before, and could not be changed.
The tech had the audacity to suggest that maybe this was the way it was designed to work!

I had this exact problem with my new Studio 1735. Dell worked on this for a week, with no success. I Googled "vista screen dim" and one of the first things that popped up talked about Catalyst. Apparently, sometimes when the ATI drivers and/or Catalyst are updated, the color control is taken away from CCC. So, right click on your desktop and click on Catalyst Control Center. Then, make sure that you are in "Advanced" mode, and click on the Color category in the left column. Then, click on the "Reactivate ATI color control". This fixed the problem with my Dell Studio 1735. I was lucky enough to discover this while I was chatting with the Dell Support guy. I passed it along, and they said they would be updating the KB and support documents with this fix.

Do you have the ATI Graphics card? If you do, you can also lower the brightness+contrast to get to a more acceptable level. This is what I do when working in dark environments (Theater Control Booths)

My week old 1558, has a similar problem. When it arrived, I could adjust perfectly the brightness level. I re-installed the OS Win 7 Ultimate and now I can't change in any possible way the brightness. IT only switches from most bright to the second most, that's it. I've tried uninstalling the driver, re-installing it, uninstalling Quickset, doing it in control panel, doing it through the hotkeys, nothing happens someone help!!!

Oh, and BTW, I have the Intel HD graphics card.

Found the solution at least for my studio with Intel GMA HD card. Install the driver for the Studio 1569... A whole day searching the internet for such a simple fix LOL.. I even tried intel's own driver but couldn't install it.

Registered just to say thanks, this worked for me.. thought I was going crazy and finally decided to see if this bluish tinge to my screen was a real issue. Cheers!

I have the same problem with my Dell studio 1737 laptop but I've kind of fixed the problem.

    What you do is:
go to the control panel and select Apperance and personalization
then click personalization, display settings, advanced settings, then above the adapter tab there should be an Intel tab, then click graphic properties, and then color enhancement. There you'll have brigtness, contrast, and gamma :) Hope this helps!

THANK YOU david_ag! I joined this forum just so I could express my sincere thanks for posting the working solution to the Studio 1558 brightness problem. I downloaded the Studio 1569 driver for the Intel HD integrated graphics card, and now the brightness adjustment works correctly with the function keys through QuickSet. It also improved the overall appearance of my display. Thank you so much again! This was a highly aggravating problem and I'm very happy to have a less harsh, more eye-friendly display.
