I am planning to buy a Dell studio 17 with WLED display. This has 1440 *900 resolution (the higher res is far to much for my old eyes, besides I want the WLED)
Attaching a external monitor with a native resolution (I am thinking about 1680 x 1050) that is higher than the native resolution on the Studio 17, is that a problem? I mean, will the videocard (ATI 3650) drive an external monitor in a higher resolution than the native resolution on the laptop display? That is, can I have diferent resolutions on the external monitor and the laptop? And how is the image quality then?

The graphics card will have no problems rendering a higher resolution external monitor, and yes, if you want, you can run both displays simultaneously at their native resolutions with no loss of quality in Dualview. The only problem with a higher resolution might be if you play games on it, because that graphics card is going to struggle a bit to keep up with 1680x1050. Hell, my HD3450 in my Studio 15 can barely play games at 1280x800.
tl;dr - Yes, you can use an external monitor of higher resolution than your notebook's native, and you can run both at the same time at their native resolutions, and you won't lose image quality.
